Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors...kind of the opposite of tactilol. :patriot:

Incidentally, one of the ships pictured (the Samuel B. Roberts) has a descendant with a pretty heroic history herself...the Sammy B (Oliver Hazard Perry frigate type) struck an Iranian mine in the Gulf during Operation Earnest Will in the '80s and came within an inch of sinking; engine room was flooded and the blast actually cracked her keel, which is almost always fatal. Only the heroic efforts of the crew saved her from sinking.

Reading some of the post-WW2 damage control stories on warships that have gotten hosed up will make you :psyduck: in a major way. Basically I think the entire USN is in the mindset where they will be godDAMNED if their boat is going to be the first once sunk due to hostile action since WW2. There was some really crazy poo poo that they did to keep the USS Cole afloat after it got hit also.

I also seem to recall some destroyer or frigate or something hitting an Iraqi mine during GW1, although I could very well be conflating that with the one you referenced.

There are a bunch of other stories like that from Vietnam and the 70s in general. The USS Forrestal comes to mind.

Nope, you're right about Desert Storm...the USS Princeton (a Ticonderoga class AEGIS cruiser) struck a mine and then had another go off nearby (sympathetic detonation). The damage wasn't quite as bad as that to the Sammy B, mainly because both mines went off on the side of the hull as opposed to directly underneath. However, there was a Canadian warship that sailed THROUGH the minefield after the Princeton got hit to deliver damage control supplies, so thanks guys :canada:.

The Forrestal is a whole 'nother incident, and one that really interests me since it was more or less caused by two things: improperly connecting the Zuni rocket pod to the aircraft in contravention of tech data (induced a short which caused the rocket to fire, starting the whole mess) and having old, leaking, non-ablative coated Comp B bombs on board instead of the newer bombs that had a less sensitive filler and were coated with the standard fire resistant coating (this compounded the problem when the bombs began to cook off WAY too soon according to the standards the Navy has regarding fire and munitions). Since my job is basically nothing but handling munitions, you can see why it would interest me.
