A regular soldier usually shoots whatever enemy happens to come into his line of fire which is itself determined by his position in the unit and the current tactical situation. A sniper is someone who is assigned a target that has been determined by someone in command to be of particularly high value in terms of how its loss will affect the enemy's overall strategy.

This isn't necessarily always true. Snipers are a recce asset in some militaries. You're defining this according to American doctrine. The problem with "Sniper Rifle" is that snipers can be completely different from country to country, and they use different weapons in a different way.

According to your definition, Samho Hayha wasn't a sniper, and Carlos Hathcock was only a sniper part-time.

In military and law enforcement terminology, a sniper rifle is a rifle used to ensure accurate placement of bullets at longer ranges than small arms. A typical sniper rifle is built for optimal levels of accuracy, fitted with a telescopic sight and chambered for a military centerfire cartridge. The term is often used in the media to describe any type of accurized firearm fitted with a telescopic sight that is employed against human targets, although "sniping rifle" or "sniper's rifle" is the technically correct fashion to refer to such a rifle.

A sniper rifle is a rifle that is used to snipe. Therefore, defining a certain rifle configuration as a sniper rifle is conflating capability and purpose in the same way that the term "assault weapon" does. Of course, pedantic semantic distinctions don't hold much water in the face of common usage.

He had a line on one a while back but passed in favor of machine guns.

I'd have done the same thing myself. A halftrack is cool, but a single person can enjoy an MG better.

I hunt snipes with a .44 magnum revolver with a 4 1/2 barrel, at ranges up to 400 yards, as per the advice of Elmer Keith.

Yeah, soviets/russians only had one term so it covers a wide range of specialists. In the finnish army you're a sniper if you're a tarkka-ampuja (sharpshooter) in a sissi (ranger/unconventional warfare unit), in other units the most accurate english term would be a designated marskman. in these units the choice of weapons is either the SVD or a modernified mosin, the training is very short so you don't learn ballistics calculations etc.

I'd assume its similar with german speaking armies since scharfschutzen just means a sharpshooter, it doesn't imply anything except being able to hit stuff well.

I just love military equipment re-purposed by other militaries in General.

I saw pictures of a Russian SVT in some guy's collection a while back. It had proper German Waffenamts on it from being cycled through an armory and re-issued as captured war material (usually they would do this with second line units, especially anti-partisan ones) and another finnish "SA" stamp on it. Best guess is that it went USSR (captured)-> Germany (sold/given)-> Finland.

A sniper is someone who uses a finely tuned rifle to shoot with extreme accuracy from relatively long distances at very specific targets. His primary role is to act as a multiplier for the more conventional forces whose mission he is working to support.

So a sniper can never use a non-finely tuned rifle? You see how ludicrous that is, right?
