BTW is that deck twin tip? I could never find those when I was skating and I hated constantly having to check which was the nose and which was the tail.

Can't totally remember but I think they are almost double, but not quite. They are somehow balanced so the center of gravity is exactly in the middle or something. There's 4 or maybe 5 different ones. He has another Powell video where he explain it all far better than I can recall.

I still don't know which side of the deck I should be skating forward. It feels like using the shorter end as the tail lets the board get more vertical and gives me easier/higher ollies, I guess it would make sense for the nose to be longer for locking in noseslides?

on instagram on a post about the andy's line on hawk's ramp he mentioned that his board he used is symmetrical (twin tale).
I don't know if that means there are versions of his board that aren't symmetrical.

tales are usually shorter than noses.

I'd be surprised if most casual skaters could tell you the difference when skating a common deck. It's super subtle imo.

It's always bothered me, so I stick a colored bolt on the tail side. It's covered up when I'm riding normally and easy to see when the board is flipped.

Same, except the nose

The colored bolt always goes on the nose.

I always felt most tails were too mellow and most noses too steep, for like 15 years I was constantly looking for the Goldilocks board shape

I'm only being pedantic because no comply is such a cool name, as well as one of my favourites to do, feels so nice. Not that I ever did them like this total magician.

Reminds me on Andy Anderson a wee bit, especially the slappy variation he does. Not to detract from this guy's skills, Andy is incredible. The guy is so rad, and also an incredibly cool and lovely human.

Always nice to see this stuff getting appreciated as some people (twats) don't think it's legit. Gonna take the opportunity and post Andy. This is also a great film as well as a load of amazing tricks. Also. a bonus Richie Jackson joint since he's definitely in the weidcore gang. I haven't watched the full fancy lad video so I'm not sure how much hes in there already, but Matt Tomasello is one of the best 'weird skaters' ever imo and his individual parts are always loving crazy good. The first is a more 'normal' bit of skating, the second on is just loving weird and inventive in the best ways.

Also on the tip marker, I've either left a bolt out of the nose or done a inside out wheel on the front, maybe I should look at colored hardware.

The Andy Anderson “Vajra” deck is a twin tip. Both the nose & tail are 7”. On conventional street popsicle decks the nose is slightly longer than the tail.

I know braille isn't real popular in this thread and I am 100% in agreement, but I also feel they were generally a positive influence as long as one didn't dig too deep.

But it looks like scientology has completely destroyed it, the company appears basically out of business because of how many millions got channeled into it. They lost their skate park and all the skaters got ghosted in the process (and Aaron keeps claiming everything is okay and this is actually a return to his roots).

I really enjoyed the skating of the guys there and obviously they're still out there making their own videos but I also enjoyed the chemistry they had as a group.

Yeah.
I don't know what's the real reason for the Braille shutdown, but Aaron was an rear end in a top hat boss for not giving any heads up for the workers.

Skate industry has generally been hit hard by post-covid inflation.
Earlier this year Revive had to downsize their skate park and shutdown their 3 Block side brand.
There was no youtube outcry about it, because Andrew Schrock wasn't a horrible human being/boss and took care of his people.

Manuel Herrera/Mogley has been skating with the Powell guys in LA, I hope he gets hooked up. He always seemed like a good, earnest dude.

With the YouTube numbers and merch sales Braille was pulling 3-5 years ago all those guys should have ended up financially just fine but whoops Aaron needed to hit Operating Thetan Level 8 so the young guys he worked to the bone just get dropped. The fact that when they had to tear down the warehouse they just dumpstered all the you make it we skate it boards shows Kyro is done and has no interest in preserving its legacy.

I’ve never really understood the sponsorship side of skateboarding, it’s always seemed unnecessarily complicated with the whole flow/am/sponsored but not pro/pro hierarchy. Like why did Kyro stay on Revive for so long after successfully launching his own brand?

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the issue with the content being lackluster over time was due to what Uzi said, which is that the skaters were the ones making all the content and forced to just absolutely crank videos out at a high volume.

We should be getting a little skate spot near me in the next two years. It's supposed to be a "skate dot" so it will only have like four features.

excited to have a spot a few blocks away with small transitions and lil hips to hit.

Any of you skate goons like comic books? There's a title called Grommets that I'm digging. It's set in the mid 80s, and my era was the late 90s early 00s, but there's a lot of poo poo that seems universal to being a skate punk. Brian Posehn has a hand in it and his stand up is pretty funny imo. It's 3 or 4 issues into a 7 issue series. It's not worth paying out the rear end for back issues, but you could probably get it from your library.

Bought a skateboard on a whim a couple of days ago despite having not so much as touched one in about two decades. Have only really spent some time so far getting comfortable standing on it and getting a feel for distributing my weight and doing a little bit of tic tac-ing in my living room.

Haven't got a helmet or anything yet but was planning to go out tomorrow to get some gear to protect my early model millennial bones because I want to go out and try rolling around a bit, but I have no idea how to actually pick a spot to do that. There are skate parks in my city but they'll require a bit of travel to get to them (not an issue on weekends, but during the week I'm pretty busy), so I was scouting around my neighbourhood for spots to just roll around a bit and practice fundamentals but felt like I was overthinking it trying to find somewhere perfect.

Anywhere smooth you can push around and turn should do. Skateparks are great, but if a decent spot is closer, go for it. Basketball courts, sidewalks, bike trails should all work.

I’ll throw in a recommendation for some wrist guards too. Your hands will thank you.
