I think this video flew under the radar a bit, I've been meaning to mention it. They are all rad as gently caress, I'm a big fan of Thackary's style, but one new guy in particular is just the most incredibly skater. Martino Cattaneo, he is in a different league. I've watched his section about 10 times now, no joke, it's the best poo poo I've seen in years. If you don't have time for the whole vid at least watch his bit (30 mins to 36 mins roughly) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiO-J85bpk8

Yeah, that was very much worth 6min

That and the guy whose video was labeled "Rodney Mullen on Bath Salts" are my favorite discoveries in years, glad I found this thread. I've never skated - it would be a miracle if I ever successfully rolled on a board, I'm profoundly deaf from bacterial meningitis so my cochleas are completely shot thus no balance on my feet on wheels - but I've always loved skate videos. My buddy Ryan used to skate at a decent level and was apparently buddies with Sean Malto which is pretty cool. Apparently was there the day he completely busted his face eating poo poo and knocked out a couple of teeth at a Kansas City skate park. Love this one by him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7PyJD1dgkg Criminal Minded fucked around with this message at 02:11 on Sep 24, 2024 |

Talking of Mullen, this is an absolute treat. Rodney Mullen getting big-brained and sciencey at the Royal Institute. He did a Ted Talk (9 years ago, wtf?) that was alright, but this is cool as gently caress. Such a goofy guy, but in the nicest way. I remember the Bones Brigade Video Show coming out (40 years ago, double wtf?) and people were taking the piss out of him for the pads, and doing the uncoolest skating - freestyle, but he was popping knee high ollies, unlike the haters. Also, flat land ollie stalefish grabs, unlike, well anyone lol. Just realised that he is a couple of years older than me, drat, I do not look as good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c3aXbwM8L0 YerDa Zabam fucked around with this message at 08:28 on Sep 28, 2024 |

Lmao, imagine how much crow you'd have to eat after talking poo poo about Rodney loving Mullen in his early years

Indeed, also Tony Hawk in the early days got pelters for his "bad robotic" style. This was the early 80s so the 70s surf style, z-boys and all that was still supposed to be "real skating". Every era has had the same dumb fucks that like to gatekeep and whatnot. Plenty of people said that street skating was a fad and uncool as it was "just a trendy version of freestyle". lmao People have even suggested that goofy looks bad, pushing mongo looks worse, and that my goofy-mongo "style" is an abomination. Those people were probably right to be fair
|
|
|

I always pushed mongo. Trying to push with my back foot felt awkward. I never had anyone tell me it was "wrong", but I saw in magazines and videos that it was.

It's weird how hostile architecture has made casual street skating nearly impossible and the only stuff that is skateable and new is bizarre poo poo you need to be really good to even try. Like 18" ledges without knobs aren't a thing anymore and it sucks.

|

I was talking with a buddy the other night about how I find it kinda interesting that skateboarding (and the like) has become mainstream enough that it's basically the default for curbs/rails/etc to have some sort of deterrent installed. Obviously some of it is full on hostile architecture to gently caress over homeless people, but a lot of times it is specifically to make things harder/impossible to skate

There's a long ledge near a shopping area I use that has no signs of ever being skated, but it's surrounded by million dollar homes so maybe that has a suppressive effect, the cops here have millisecond response time. I bet the first time someone shows up with a board the stoppers come out. Decent space, not insanely high, and doesn't exit into a street. So that stuff is still being made it's just very rare. I feel like they were always rare though, but I guess concrete pourers have gotten more strategic with putting seams and carvings into their stuff so a smooth edge is double rare now.

He's going to be at a Street Skateboarding League event in Sydney this weekend and I'm really tempted to go because some of the cheaper tickets are very affordable and the lineup is so loaded with talent.

Has anyone around Seattle been to Marginal Way skate park in the last couple years? I hadn't been in forever but I got stuck in some stupid train/NFL traffic last night so I swung by to take a look. It's like two times bigger than before and everything looks so smooth and good now. Lots of dope art too. It was way too dark to get good pictures (or safely skate) but I'm going back tomorrow to get some pics for my collection. This is one of their perimeter walls:

Can't believe Hewitt is 50 and shreds bowls at that level. Also, this might be the first time Neil Blender has spoken on camera in like 10 years.

Nice work with the wide angle. That arch really is something. Side note this dude has catalogued a ton of US skateparks and has some shots of the place from 2016: https://northwestskater.com/marginal.html

That Thrasher edit is criminally short. Hey look, thread sweetheart Andy Anderson has a new "part". I posted it because it will be easy to muss it as it is posted on the new account of the guys who filmed his Powell vid. They only have 800 subs atm. The project is sponsored by Swatch so I guess they'll use short clips from it. TBH, the format isn't great and could be better with just the skating but it is worth the watch (lol?) of course, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r0dr3NVQe0

New Nike SB | Antihero video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy5E6hbRfLc Grant Taylor's cybernetic legs are still giving him inhuman pop in 2024. I got to see the sneak preview for this on Saturday night at the new DLX shop location in the Mission. The crowd was hyped, especially on Gus Gordon's tricks and the Peter Hewitt cameo.
