Do the lightweight trucks really make a difference? Are they a lot weaker? There's like a million loving brands now, are any of them worth checking out or is it best to just stick with the classics (Thunder/Indy/etc)?
I've got some Thunder hollow light trucks; the weight makes a difference but not a huge one and I've met some people who prefer the non-hollow ones. They're a whole loving lot lighter than pretty much anything I've tried by Independent or Fury. They're pretty much the same strength as solid trucks; if you're doing anything that would actually bust your trucks, the board will snap first or you're likely to bust up some non-lightweight trucks just as well. I thought they'd be a lot weaker because everything that can be hollowed out is but honestly outside of the normal scrapes that trucks get, I haven't noticed a problem.

A friend of mine rides on Tensor response trucks and they're pretty loving nice but I'm a Thunder kid and skateboarding is nothing if it isn't blind brand fanboyism.

The only thing is, it says "no flex" yet the guy in the youtube video is bouncing on it and it looks like it has "low flex." Also, does it carve at all? It looks like it would just slide right off the bat with no give.

It has no flex whatsoever, its 9 plys of stiffness. I'm actually suprised that mine snapped under the car that drove over it, I always thought it would survive. It carves fine, and you can top it if you want more carving. It pretty much does what you want it too, unless you had like 88 zombies or are in the rain. (my 86s were fine though)

If you really want your feet locked in, check out Gravity clear grip. I got some for the same reasons as you, since everything I read said it was ultra coarse. I shredded the poo poo out of my hands putting it on my deck, and it hurts like hell when you bail and land on it but it will lock your feet in like you wouldn't believe.

How much flex do you want? There are some compromises to make based on what you want to do with the board. Flex is great for carving and cruising around, but makes things sketchy once you start getting above 35-40mph. If you want a fairly flexible board for all around use, check out Kracked Skulls. I believe you can order them with an extra ply of fiberglass for a little less flex, but it's a good all around board if you want a drop through. Concave is wide and a little shallow but still locks your feet in, and you can really bounce off the flex in a carve. I'd also suggest checking out Rayne, they make some pretty nice drops with a lot of concave. I've got an old Avenger which is a topmount speedboard but it's got crazy concave (before the pleasure dome concave, haven't ridden that yet) and it has almost no flex. You can throw some really sharp, really grippy carves, but it doesn't have the same sort of pop coming out of a carve as a deck with flex.

You had to post in the thread or email the goon from Skate.ly with the email address you would use to log in I think. You could try looking for an email contact on the site or get someone with archives to look.

Personally I like 8.25 boards. I'm 6 feet tall. Darkstar will be fine.

I ordered my first 8" deck a couple of days ago along with some Thunder 147 Hollow Light His, I had hoped to get everything before the weekend but it looks like they won't be showing up 'til next week. I was kind of apprehensive about the whole thing at first, placing an order, then calling to cancel it, then placing it again hours later, but the more I think about it the more certain I am moving up to a wider/higher board is the way to go.

On an unrelated note; Does anyone have any idea of the best way to source blank, uncoated decks? I've a hankering to burn some art into them but don't know where to start.

I don't have a lot of time to look through skate.ly however I'm wondering, do they offer free shipping?

If you can stock Landyachtz with a $10-$20 mark up and offer free shipping, it will balance out. I'm not sure ware skate.ly ships out of, but Landyachtz ships out of Cannada.

As a US consumer, I'd rather drop an extra $10-$20 on the price of the board and get it a few days sooner than spend $20 on shipping and get it in two weeks.

That being said, I went with the Nine Two Five. Thanks for all the advice, I'd rather have a bit of flex. I know some of you preferred the Evo, but I'd rather have something with a bit of give. I love the "gas pedals" too.

A long time ago, I got a longboard for christmas and it was awesome. However the thing is a monster and it doesn't fit in back of my car anymore. I'm seriously considering getting something that looks like a real skateboard and doesn't carry the stigma of carrying a massive board around. I've been looking into the Krooked Zip Zagger, mainly because it's a lot shorter and closer to a real board than what I currently have. I have seen a couple of them in person and love the shape. I could use my connection at my local skate shop and just get them to order the deck and just put my current hardware (with new bolts and other stuff of course) and then ride off into the sunset on a better board. Has anyone ever road this board before and is it worth for a guy who would be mainly cruising around his street and maybe the local park that has flat ground or am I better off getting something that is a lot more cruiser oriented.

The Zip Zinger or the Zig Zagger?

It depends on the environment. Also, when you say "my current hardware," what are you talking about? What type of trucks/wheels do you have?

It looks like it requires smaller wheels and . I feel like anything more than 65mm will give off a good deal of bite.

Unless you like to carve really hard turns, I'd say go for it. Zumies has a pretty cool set up and it's only $100. (Probably because the barrings are poo poo, but that doesn't matter, you'll replace them eventually)

I hope I'm not posting a huge derail here, but I felt it worth mentioning that eS footwear is apparently going out of business. Anyone who skated at all between the years of 1995 and 2001 almost undoubtedly owned a pair of these shoes, being that they've had a host of incredible riders such as: Eric Koston, Ronnie Creager, Chad Muska, Paul Rodriguez, PJ Ladd, and a personal favorite of mine, Rick McCrank just to name a few off hand (not to mention the fact that their shoes were some of the coolest in the industry). It's a bummer seeing this company go for a number of reasons, but I feel like it mainly is a sign of how difficult it is for skate companies to stay afloat now that big companies like Nike and Adidas are grabbing more and more of the skateboarding market. Anyway, Scuba Steve who filmed for and (I think) was co-owner of eS has made this blog, http://es-days.tumblr.com/ and though it's fairly new, I'm sure it'll offer up some cool, sentimental photos/videos. Total bummer.
