I'm pretty tall (about 6 foot 2 inches) but i'm thin and quite light. I'm not entirely sure if I should get a longer board (8 inch+) due to my height or if I should stick to a shorter board. Any advice?

Tall dudes need big boards. Get a 8.25 at least or I'd say 8.5 or larger. People with wider stances (tall dudes) will end up with their front foot placed too forward, like on the front bolts or past the bolts even.

I got much softer/larger wheels. Currently I'm running 65mm 80a ones with really big contact patches, and it's so much easier going over cracks. I also have 1/2 inch risers (don't hit) under mid trucks, I don't think I could get away with having none at all, but I might consider 1/8 inch ones. I love my big toddler wheels.

I'm considering an 8-inch deck. What are some interesting brands to consider next time I go to the skate shop? I love deranged Toy Machine style art. Currently this is in my list of possibles, though I'm not sure how available it will be. Could I ask them to order it for me?

G-forms if you're rich, Triple 8s if you aren't, Smith Scabs if you want to feel nothing when you fall.

The g-forms only work for slams, they don't have a hard plastic shell so you won't slide on them if you're thinking about using them for riding bowl.

I have Smith Scabs for when I'm sliding and riding downhill and really, you won't feel poo poo if you fall on them. They're clouds of love strapped onto your knees.
I brought them snowboarding on a particularly icy day once, and they paid off because I could be a little less cautious and wound up having a few hits that would have been nasty bruises, and possibly the end of my day.

So I stopped by here the other day and talked to the guy about skateboarding at my size (6'4, 270lbs) and he said I shouldn't have any problems, I would just need a wider board, which I had figured. I don't want to do much more than skating and maybe learning to ollie some day...anyone have any tips on decks/trucks/wheels I should look at/stay away from?

I assume this is in re: Jordan Sanchez's part, but I totally agree. He was the Lunatic Fringe feature in the last Thrasher and they made a pretty big deal out of how he seems to have a magic eye for what is skateable. I especially love that transfer from one block to the other that's almost a complete right angle. The one where they show a miss first with the old lady shaking her cane at him.

That loving Jordan Sanchez Natas Spin to Kickflip was incredible. When the camera panned out to show the pole, the spin was the first thing I thought of but didn't think it was going to happen. Exceeded expectations.

I love skateboarding like people like longboarding - bombing hills, carving, the whole bit. Yesterday me and a buddy (who was on a longboard actually) bombed a huge hill about 40 minutes from my house. The first part of the hill is nice and curvy and then there's a real drop down into a flatter section. About halfway down, I was already going too fast to run out so I just started carving the hell out of it to avoid the speed wobbles. The adrenaline of knowing that one little mistake will gently caress your day up is awesome, I wish I had something that could have gauged how fast we were going because it was ridiculous. I need new wheels though, I'm still rolling on these Manny Santiago World Champions that I've had for a couple years now.

Your local shop should have a couple in. My shop(s) tend to have 2-3 of those graphics at a time. And if they don't have it in, they should be able to order it for you, although it may not come in for a while depending on how often they get boxes from companies and your timing. If you're not a regular at the shop, they may ask you to put a few bucks down for it to make sure they don't get stuck with a board that nobody comes back for.

I need some wheel recommendations if anyone with some practical experience can help.

Like many in this thread, I'm looking to get back in to skating a little bit after not having skated since I was a kid. I'd like to ride a shortboard (prob will get an 8" blank from a local shop) and be able to ollie and practice basic tricks. However I'd also like to be able to cruise around and not get tripped up by every little crack, pebble, etc. I really hate that.

Would something around 58mm and 96a hardness be a good compromise?

Was thinking about getting into skating with my next paycheck. What's a good base setup for someone around 6'? I'm just looking to cruise and maybe carve bowls, but tricks aren't entirely out of the question. I was thinking about a 8.25 or 8.5 board, but I'm lost on the trucks, wheels, and bearings.

These are what I'm about to buy for that very style of riding: http://socalskateshop.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=45300

Bearings, just buy a set of bones reds if you don't want to think about it. If you aren't going to spend much time in the air flipping your board you can't go wrong with 149 Independent trucks on an 8.5 board.

Thanks for the advice. Is there anything dangerously bad about decks from Arbor? I really like the design on the Whiskey artist series but don't want to get a bad deck.

The hype got me and I put in some Bones Hardcore bushings a while ago. They were extremely clicky, which I hated, but it seems like the tough plastic core rubs against my kingpin threads.

I sped up the wearing process by using the threads to quickly "sand" the cores until they fit with less resistance, was this a bad idea? Turns are quieter now, and since I also loosened up my trucks a bit more, turning feels really badass

I went down hills a few times, one was a pretty hairy experience. I happened to put my front foot a little too far from the bolts with too much pressure on my back foot, the front of the board wobbled side to side alarmingly, and I made a mental note to never do that poo poo again

E. I did a pretty stupid thing when I first gripped my deck a year ago, I just poked the hardware through the tape rather than actually removing the grip in those spots, and I guess due to a combination of overtightening the bolts, the screw heads sinking in, and the abrasive grip being dragged into the hole, I have holes that the heads are gradually tearing through. My 7 ply is more like 3 ply in places. Oops.

Obvious question, perhaps, but this isnt safe to ride anymore, is it?

Your bushing should be fine. I've done the same thing in the past.
Also get a new deck. I don't think you trucks are going to just explode off any time soon but a year is long a enough time to have a deck in use. I don't typically worry too much about the grip tape in the holes, I try to cut a little out but usually it's not perfect. I think your hole wear is probably due to the deck being old and your probably tightening things down a bit too much.

What's funny is someone using a power drill to screw their bolts on and accidentally pulling the entire screw head through a new deck.

It is grocery day and good weather for a ride, so I clicked into my CR1 and pedaled twenty miles to the bike shop in the same town as our preferred grocer before catching up with my wife and kids for groceries. I looked to see I they had any longboard decks for my daughter who wants to build one and they only had a few completes from Sector 9 and Palisades.

The bike wrench gave me advise for other shops to look into with the only guarantee being in Concord, a good clip away. He then offered to pull the trucks on any longboard in shop and sell it to me at bare deck price. I took him up on the offer and paid for a deck before heading out to call my wife for a pickup. Her phone was dead.

Oh well, I tucked the deck under my arm, clipped into my bike, and merged into pre-Main Street traffic, down Main Street, linked to the road to the industrial end of town, lost my bike computer in the middle of the road, dismounted to grab it, and made my way to the grocery store.

My daughter was super excited when I caught up with them and handed her the deck. When we finished, we headed back to the bike shop to "see if they have any trucks and wheels for you." The wench had a good sense of humor and was happy to play along. But the girl wanted purple wheels like the longboard in the corner...

After I offered him ten bucks to make the wheel swap, he laughed and gave me the original trucks with the purple wheels and only let me pay him an extra five rather than the original ten. And then home to build the board.

Mostly telling his story so it will be in writing to point her to when she gets older and insists I have never gone out of my way for her :v:

Now off to a quiet dead-end road in town for her to try it out.

I guess these are pretty old and not sure if they have been linked before, but I was watching some "Skateology" videos on youtube, and they are :krad:. The are videos are tricks filmed at 1000 fps (on a $30k camera) and are great for showing how tricks are done.
