In the 1993 novel "The Eternal Enemy", Christopher Pike came up with a particularly convoluted version of the classic Grandfather paradox: a paradox of time travel in which inconsistencies emerge through changing the past,[4] with the commonly used name coming from the variant - used in various stories, books and films - whereby a person travels to the past and kills their own grandfather, preventing the existence of their father or mother and therefore their own existence.[5] Pike's version begins deceptively with the protagonist Rela seeming an ordinary American teenager - who lives in Los Angeles, is good at her studies, works at a library to earn some dollars, likes "cheerios and boys" and is especially very fond of one specific boy, her classmate Chris. Having suffered amnesia, Rela is unaware that in fact she is a time-traveler from the future, that Chris is in fact her grandfather - and that she had come back in time with the specific intention of killing him. That is because Chris, in addition to becoming her grandfather, would become a brilliant scientist who would create a race of cyborgs and robots - and they would eventually supersede human beings and make humanity extinct. However, even when recovering her memory, Rela can't bring herself to go through with killing Chris - deeply loving him, and knowing the young Chris to be innocent of any wrongdoing which his future self would commit. Rather, it is Rela who gets killed by her grandfather, who in the far future became himself a ruthless, pitiless robot and came back in time to eliminate the threat posed by her. Still, Rela ultimately succeeds in her mission of changing the future and saving humanity - before dying, she manages to leave a secret message to Chris, revealing the truth. Reading it, Chris becomes determined never to create robots and cyborgs, or become one himself.

The grandfather paradox was described as early as 1931, and even then it was described as "the age-old argument of preventing your birth by killing your grandparents".[6] Since then, it was repeatedly depicted by various Science-Fiction writers - but never before in quite the way Pike came up with.

The rubber-faced Ernest, almost always dressed in a denim vest and baseball cap, appeared at the door of an unseen and unheard but seemingly unwilling neighbor named Vern. The spots were structured in a way to allow the viewer to be "Vern", as Varney looked directly in the camera whenever Vern was addressed. Ernest's seemingly pointless conversations with Vern – which were actually a monologue due to Vern never responding – inevitably rambled around to a favorable description of the sponsor's product, followed by his signature close, "KnowhutImean?"[8] While Vern is never shown to ever say anything, it is implied that he finds Ernest to be an unwelcome pest due to him trying to slam his door in Ernest's face on a few occasions. Vern also shakes his head "No" whenever Ernest invites him to do something. Ernest, despite having good intentions, is utterly oblivious to Vern's apparent distress regarding him and always regards Vern as his closest buddy and confidant.

Ernest puts his fighting skills and yo-yo skills together and he does an around the world which knocks Thompson out cold and breaks the Yo-yo to reveal the Eyes of Igoli. The tribe rushes toward them as Rene compliments Ernest on how he's her "Knight in Shining Armor". A few weeks later, Ernest and Rene are about to go on a date. Ernest even paints an ostrich egg and gives it to her as a gift. Sadly, she tells Ernest that the date is off because he's too adventurous for her. Ernest tells Rene he recalls her calling him an ordinary Schmoe. Rene tells him not to let anyone call him an "ordinary Schmoe" because she thinks he is a dynamic schmoe[clarification needed]. Ernest makes a speech on how he is bold and adventurous and then, in conclusion, puts on his hat heroically, forgetting he had set it on the table and put the ostrich egg in it. His only response is "Eeee-heh-hew! Ew! Ew!"
