FMguru posted:this but any article about mathematics i complained about this once in a thread here, saying that all the super complicated math articles should at least have a layman's explanation near the beginning. some math pricks replied that that would be pointless because articles about advanced math concepts are only meant for people who have the grounding to understand them, and the simplified explanation would either be wrong or redundant. i said that writing impenetrable articles only for experts defeats the purpose of an encyclopedia, but they had terminal engineer brain.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Unusual_place_names Lots of winners here. "Csesznek A village in Hungary. Translates roughly as "they are loving" in Hungarian. The Czech and Slovak name for it is "Cesnek" which means "garlic". It's vampire-proof!!!" "Corona Wonder how well quarantine has served this California city? Hope the whole city doesn't get infected. Also in Alabama, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, South Dakota, and Tennessee." "Noisy-le-Grand A very loud and obnoxious place in France." "Mora A place in Sweden that means "mother". This place must get all kinds of "your mom" jokes." "Shafter A city in California where you can always give her the shaft! Well, the horny school boys may like it here at least."

No one wants to be the skunk at the garden party. But Wikipedia is no longer the fledgling experiment it was back in the 2000s. It's now the world's foremost repository of humanity's collective knowledge, and with that privilege comes some custodial responsibilities. The benefits of humor in helping boost editor retention must be weighed against its potential for disruption. Consider: Humor is sometimes misinterpreted – sarcasm is hard to convey in writing that lacks the cues of verbal communication. Many editor and administrator hours have been spent resolving disputes arising from this. Irresponsible humor damages Wikipedia's credibility – we've all worked hard to cultivate the reputation for trustworthiness Wikipedia enjoys. Readers come here expecting information, and when they find jokes instead, they lose faith in our reliability. Not everyone is looking for humor – Sometimes, an editor is engaged in a serious task and just wants to focus on it. Clear disclosure gives them the option to do so, whereas undisclosed jokes often draw attention and take time to figure out. Think of the disclosure requirement not as an obstacle, but as a challenge. Humor can still be funny even when it's disclosed — try reading WP:Sarcasm is really helpful with a straight face — it just needs to be, well, good.

awesomeolion posted:I love how wikipedia articles about plants and animals are completely incomprehensible I don't remember if I've told this story in this thread before, but I once found a Wikipedia page on some rare frog species, and most of the article was just a taxonomy argument: one paragraph of taxonomy, and then a second larger paragraph that started with "the above is total nonsense and the poster is an idiot, because..." I deeply hope it's still there.

Explaining these complicated mathematical concepts in straightforward terms is entirely possible, it's just too difficult for the math nerds who own the pages. They push back and make up excuses because what you're asking for is hard and they don't know how to do it.
