Phi230 posted:I just finished the Case Against Adnan Syed I'm 4 episodes into the Staircase doc, it's baffling how these crooked assholes get away with half the poo poo they do. Same with West of Memphis and other docs where someone is accused, the DA/judge refuses outright to look at any new evidence or admit wrongdoing, yet nobody ever gets punished or disbarred from working in law. My first thought after seeing all those docs was "if Trump's gonna build a loving wall, start with the entire border of Texas, then across to Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina instead"

On Prime I found China Circus: Elites by Chinese Acrobats https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GUP1C9G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_a2yPCb33A7C10 It's very interesting to see the acrobatics performed but my heart breaks watching these kids being worked so hard.

Syed is probably guilty. But there's a boatload of weird further and unexpected things going on in that case. Which makes you wonder how safe most prosecutions are.

Our Planet, the new Attenborough doc, is great as usual but man, every episode ends on a huge bummer. It's important to show but I can't binge-watch them like I usually do because I get depressed. I was flicking through the HD cable channels the other day and found this cool nature doc on the Smithsonian Channel called My Journey with a Polar Bear that was really loving good. https://www.smithsonianchannel.com/shows/my-journey-with-a-polar-bear/0/3468389 quote:For four years, Asgeir Helgestad, a Norwegian wildlife filmmaker, has followed a beautiful polar bear mother named Frost in her home on Svalbard, a group of islands in the Arctic Ocean. Rising temperatures are causing dramatic changes in her ecosystem, leading to desperate struggles to find food for herself and her young cubs. Follow this tale of man and beast, hope and despair, and life and death in a land disappearing before their eyes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjPUeAVNB1I

I watched a doc recently about a wrongfully convicted man called Time Simply Passes. The man, James Richardson was railroaded for allegedly poisoning his children's grits with pesticide. Even though a babysitter made their lunch, she was never investigated. The pesticide was 'found' in his shed by a local drunk though the police had searched it several times with no success. He was in prison for 21 years, and the DA refused to grant him a new trial even after the babysitter was in a nursing home with Alzheimer's and kept repeating 'I killed those kids'. It was infuriating; but of course the prosecutor maintained 'Nope, I did a bang up job!'

Ritz, one of the lead detectives in the case actually railroaded a guy named Ezra Mables into a conviction so ludicrously corrupt that the. DA actually agreed to ask it be overturned when the whole thing was laid out for them. Wrongful convictions are somewhere around 1/20. Which is loving horrific.

Dr.Caligari posted:There's something I don't like about how Dawson City: Frozen Time is structured, but it's very interesting . This had been on my list to watch and I finally got to it. Even though the town was interesting, I feel like if you got hooked on "amazing lost film discovery", you don't want to watch a movie that's 80% about the history of the town itself, then finally gets to the discovery at the very end. The "how" story where all these films end up in that spot is really interesting, but I would have preferred to hear more about the discovered films themselves if the filmmakers didn't feel that the discovery story itself filled enough length of the movie.

I love 90's, earl 2000's Discovery-channel-esque documentaries from the time before Reality TV permeated even documentaries, and even milquetoast ones suddenly had to have melodramatic editing and narration (see anything that comes on the History Channel these days). Documentary about Zombies in Haiti. Not exactly Pulitzer-prize-winning in terms of factuality, but still an interesting doc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4T51WXSMpQ An absolute classic documentary about China's 3 Gorges Dam. A very good product of what is clearly a ton of great production work. I can kinda see the influence of this huge-scale doc on future classics like Planet Earth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeUAy1VPav4 A great documentary about gnarly ants around the world. They built a special robot (in the days before this was trivial) to get video and even audio close-ups of the ants doing their thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHByp2K4OWg Note: there are likely much better versions of the doc's out there somewhere.

It might be out of theaters already but I would recommend Amazing Grace for anyone who likes Aretha Franklin, gospel music, or maybe music generally? The very weird production process shows a little but the music is incredible and it's made way better by being able to see the reactions of the other people in the church.

Perhaps from this thread, I heard out Looking For Mike which is on youtube: In short, in 2002 the film-maker was working with a guy "Mike" who turned out to have grown up near the same small town. They become friends and then Mike suddenly dies of apparently natural causes. The mystery then starts: * Mike was making preparations for his death beforehand * And every bit of ID he had was fake On one hand, it's polluted by a lot of the true crime cliches and styling. The length could have been halved had they cut out the fake drama and the film-maker getting emotional about the case. On the other hand, it's not very long anyway. Not a must-see but interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLQp1c4Ql00

King of Beasts is a strange watch. It follows a trophy hunter on a lion hunt. It seems like it was made to put hunting in a positive light, but the film is very ambivalent. There is killing and butchering of animals, so it could be very triggering. I found it interesting to see the process unfold, the cultures of wealthy US hunters juxtaposed with Tanzanian culture and the ethical back and forth. It's stuck with me.
