To be fair, Sanderson could have some sort of twisted Mormon Solidarity with Meyers, which is why he doesn't really want people to badmouth the series.

Based on Brandon's write-up of a fight between Vin and Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, I get the feeling even he is willing to pass judgement that Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth is garbage.quote:His eyes opened wide. "COMMUNISTS!" he yelled. Then, incredibly, he climbed up on a stump and began to address those watching. "Hear me, socialists! Your foul ways have no grounding in rational thought, and only seek to divest men of their rights! You will listen, now, as I explain, at length, why capitalism is the only method by which truth can be found and expressed."

Then it turns into lesbian leather bondage fantasy stuff, then rape fantasy, and gets worse.

My favorite part is how everyone has a cool fantasy name except the main character, whose name is Richard. That's still better than Malazan's names, though.

This was evil manifest. I dug the quote up for the Goodkind discussion in the Audiobook thead, seems appropriate here too. I tend to keep reading series I start even if they go downhill. Hell, I'm still reading Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake series. But I had to give up on Sword of Truth after whichever book had the statues so beautiful they converted an entire nation to Objectivism.

I suppose we're getting a bit off topic here, but I agree. The first Sword of Truth book (Wizard's First Rule) was pretty good. I mean, there's a reason a lot of us started the series, right? I can't identify exactly where the series went downhill, but it's fair to say I enjoyed it at first.

The part that stuck out most for me was him being forced to live in some overly-exaggerated communist country. He was somehow able to free them from their evil socialist bonds by... building a statue? Something like that?

You've also got to love how the extremely capable female protagonist either gets naked in a public setting or almost-raped like every single book. Also the first book contains a like 40 page sequence where Richard gets bondage tortured by a leather clad dominatrix, but is able to escape...by falling in love with his torturer. Goodkind is a bad man who writes books that are a source of actual evil.

I haven't read those.

I've read every Sword of Truth novel. I enjoy them, though I don't believe in the bootstrapping objectivist message - I can appreciate something I don't agree with. That said, I had a friend who loved the series. In one of the later books, Richard declares he's sending his army to the land of the main bad guy with the intent on loving it up as much as possible - killing women and children, salting the earth, all sorts of fun stuff. To show them that if you wage war against Richard and crew, there are ultimate consequences. Said friend used to use this as a discussion point on how to deal with Muslims in a post 9-11 world. "Richard is right. We just need to go over there and start killing everything and everyone until they give up. You have to hit them hard like that so they see we mean business. They only understand violence."

I liked reading the Sword of truth series. I disagree with the Ayn Rand stuff, but I actually found them extremely fun to read. Book four, Temple of the Winds, was my favorite. The book that I really hated the most, was book 7, where literally none of the main characters even appeared until the very end in the last 10 pages. My friend introduced me to the series in 2002 in my freshman year at college, I read it in 3 days.

Ran across this interview thingquote:Remember that the tables--and the ars Arcanum--are 'in world' creations. (Or, at least, in-universe.) The knowledge represented in them is as people understand it, and can always have flaws. That was the case with having atium on the table in the first place, and that was the case with people (specifically the Inquisitors) trying to figure out what atium did Hemalurgically. Huh, I wonder what Larasium spikes would do. EDIT: For the matter, what would the god metal alloys do in hemalurgy/ferruchemy veekie fucked around with this message at 15:20 on Apr 15, 2012 |

I don't think it would be spite. It's a pretty important plot point in-setting that (major Hero of Ages spoilers) Vin can't draw on the mists while even faintly Hemalurgically empowered. The notion of the essence of Preservation being useful in an explicitly Ruin-derived empowerment goes against this as well. You see the same thing with the whole 'Preservation can't destroy' stuff, which leads to his overarching plan for the books.

I get more and more excited every time I read more about Sanderson's whole Cosmere thing. This quote: quote:Adonalsium was something or someone else. You will find out more. There are clues in Warbreaker and The Way of Kings." Also, this whole answer (MISTBORN SPOILERS) quote:Well, here's the thing. What Sazed is right now is something of a god in the classic Greek sense--a superpowered human being, elevated to a new stage of existence. Not GOD of all time and space. In a like manner, there are things that Sazed does not have power over. For instance, he couldn't bring Vin and Elend back.

I hope Kelsier stays dead, or at least does nothing more than influence things from behind the scenes as a spirit-y thing. Brandon really does not need to verge into the resurrection rut that kills a lot of fantasy. The problem is that resurrected characters are very hard to give decent character arcs, especiallly characters who have already progressed through a decent arc. The one exception I can think of is Buffy season 4, I think, when she's forcibly pulled from heaven.

So I liked the Mistborn Trilogy and Alloy of Law. Still haven't read his WoT books because I've only read the first three (and I dread reading the ones after that based on what people have told me). So the Stormlight Archives series is pretty good though? I wasn't a huge fan of Rothfuss' writing is the only thing and the OP claims that it's comparable to that.
