Somebody should post a new AMD thread for Ryzen and I will close this one. Dunno if this should be now or when we have more details, but it should happen!

Still AMD doing the benchmarking but here's the final specs of what they're claiming. Basically they claim to be strictly better at the top level of the high-end (at half the price and with a lower power use), while for the more mainstream (still high-end of mainstream) chips they're conceding they're worse on single-threaded but are banking on 8/16 putting them ahead.quote:The top-end part is the R7 1800X. This $499 chip will have a 3.6GHz base speed and a 4.0GHz boost speed, with a 95W TDP. AMD is positioning it against Intel's i7-6900K, a $1,050 processor using the Broadwell-E core running at 3.2 GHz, and turboing up to 3.7GHz. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/02/amd-ryzen-arrives-march-2-8-cores-16-threads-from-just-329/ evilweasel fucked around with this message at 16:56 on Feb 22, 2017 |

When's the last time you got excited over a processor? 100% of respondents said the 2500k. Looks like I may finally make the jump above 4 cores. I'll wait a bit and see how the independent benchmarks turn out, as well as what Intel does with their pricing/launch schedule. Either upgrade would require a new motherboard, so Intel would need to achieve some semblance of price:performance parity. (or some "LOL psych here's an octocore on the 1151 socket" shenanigans)

Can someone explain how OCing works for Ryzen? Is it automatic with XFR, or is there still a manual element to it?

Interesting but their price point puts the top Ryzen on price parity with the 6800K while not offering Quad channel ram and as many PCI-E lanes, it does offer more cores, more cache, and a pretty good power savings so it will be interesting to see how it competes and how Intel plans to respond. Considering I don't think anyone at Intel expected AMD to actually catch up, I can't believe they have anything truly in the pipeline for at least the next year that they could change quick enough to respond, unless they want another Broadwell/Skylake buggy mess.

ufarn posted:Can someone explain how OCing works for Ryzen? Is it automatic with XFR, or is there still a manual element to it? You can still manually tune things as always. XFR seems to be a sort of "auto overclock mode," where the system will dial itself up a little past boost if it sees adequate cooling.

ufarn posted:Can someone explain how OCing works for Ryzen? Is it automatic with XFR, or is there still a manual element to it? Its possible you may be able to use XFR and manual OC to some extent and there is per core OC'ing too but we don't know the specifics yet.
