Schenck v. U.S. posted:In addition I think elbows are very seldom used in sparring because it's difficult to practice them safely (you don't want to slice up your sparring partner's face), so most fighters don't have a lot of practice either throwing or defending against elbows. quote:Also MMA fights frequently go to positions on the ground or in the clinch where the distance is too close to punch effectively, while elbows can be throw effectively in very short distances.

Its one of those things. Because some fights were worked its hard to give all of them credibility. There were definitely a lot of stoppages bas pulled off where someone got hosed up whether or not they were taking a dive. Either way bas was legit in his day.

Mr. Nice! posted:Pancrase was worked more often than not. Here's a question; how much of this was "this is the guy who's winning because Yakuza money says he has to" and how much of it was "go out there and put on a super good show, even if that means doing things that wouldn't be the best move for a fight-fight type fight because the crowd of Yakuza heavies wants blood and guts"? Some of both?

There weren't even rumours of Yakuza involvement in pancrase iirc. It wasn't fixed fights, it was sometimes pro wrestling and sometimes real fights

I decided to skip this weeks longest running wrassling entertainment program as I've been working/ playing persona 5. Glad to hear that ma boy "Da Bigga Dawg" Strowman is kicking tale. But I have an important question to ask. Has Nakamura killed Dolph Ziggles in the ring yet? As i like Nakamaura and Ziggles bores me. Also where's the naked Cena gif from?

This is the combat sports q&a thread. It's for questions about combat sports. Here's a link to a q&a thread for fake and gay things like naked Cenas and Ziggles: https://forums.somethingawful.com/s...hreadid=3180956

The other thread is for asking questions about imaginary things that bore you like Ziggles. They should sticky the other one too so it's less confusing. e; hey jake ellenbe, i mean Captain Log, wouldn't it be cool to see the very real death of rudolpho jiggler, who's fully recovered and annoying as ever the following week? wouldn't that be cool in real life? wait why are you looking at me like that? what's wrong? I'm sure this has been asked, but what's the history behind the names of some of the classes, like Flyweight, Bantamweight, Welterweight and Featherweight? I've done some cursory research, but never found a good explanation.

flyweight - the minimum size a fighter has to be to not get scared that a buzzing fly will carry him away bantamweight - bantam chickens are smaller than average. these fighters can easily be shoved inside an egg featherweight - a sack of feathers is twice as heavy as a featherweight welterweight - a corruption of Walterweight, these fighters are the same size as prime Walter Matthau

LobsterMobster posted:flyweight - the minimum size a fighter has to be to not get scared that a buzzing fly will carry him away Checks out. Also Atomweight is actually named for forums poster -Atom-, whose posts have little substance. Cruiserweight is a reference to certain shenanigans which happen in highway rest stops, as this division has the largest lean muscley men.

Hello friends, I'm looking for some good MMA fights between a submission expert and stand up guy. I understand that people are more well rounded than that, but I'd like some fights that essentially devolve into the dichotomy. Could anyone help out?

Jake Ellenberger v John Howard is a great grappler v striker fight thats actually good, although both guys have some tools in other areas. And the fight actually is amazing and you get to see both guys do a lot of damage in their area

I remember it as kind of a lame fight because for some reason the second fight, where there was a cut from a headbutt, I thought Nog looked really sharp. Not sure why I thought that or if I was crazy, haven't seen in in ages.

I don't know the numbers but the series of Sakuraba fights with various Gracies was great. Mark Kerr's various fights tell a story. Vanderei Silva and Fedor's fights of course. The GP tournaments were good too. There was some funny commentary on the early ones where they recorded the commentary months after the event - one where Bas Rutten spoiled the result of the fight he was supposedly about to call 'live'. Most of this is remembered from watching them back then, some may not have aged well!
