Starting to get into final checks of things before our due date in a couple months. Are Fridababy rectal thermometers accurate enough? Not worried about price of things, I want good data. Any solid reccs on formula brands? Mostly for backup/supplement

Although I can't say I'm a fan of the first trimester nausea. I'm glad embryo's healthy, but let me get some food down! Razzled posted:Starting to get into final checks of things before our due date in a couple months. Rectal thermometers are the most accurate, especially for babies under 3 months. Can't go wrong with the Frida, that's what we used. Formula will depend on your baby's particular sensitivities or allergies, if they have any. Baby Moon wasn’t lactose intolerant, but she was sensitive to something in the Enfamil the hospital provided. That immediately stopped when we switched to Similac 360. Your results may vary, so it's a conversation best had with your pediatrician. Congrats on the upcoming little one BTW Looks to the Moon fucked around with this message at 22:10 on Jan 3, 2025 |

digital thermometers are generally very accurate in general people like to poo poo on these IR forehead thermometers' accuracy but i think it's largely operator error, they use them at my local hospitals ER so they can't be that bad https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00OCIJNWC Even if you're bad at following instructions it will probably get you in the sick/not sick ballpark without having to pull off their diaper and stick stuff up their butt. as a new parent you're probably going to wonder if they're sick/how sick at least once a week for the first 4 months so these are nice for a first pass we have two, one for home use, one for travel i find it very accurate but forehead temps are ~1°F lower than mouth temp Hadlock fucked around with this message at 22:23 on Jan 3, 2025 |

Ours doesn't have any special health or dietary issues but we've been using similac 360 for formula and he's been thriving

We used exclusively Similac either Pro-Advance, Non-GMO or Pro-Sensitive pre-mix which is a disposable bottle you just slap a nipple on there and stick it in the baby's mouth. What's variety is available that week on amazon varies from week to week. All the listings for the stuff we bought on amazon have disappeared and been replaced with near identical listings I think it's 4x as expensive so instead of $250 for 1 year of formula it's $1000 (back when it was $65/case) https://www.amazon.com/Similac%C2%AE-NeoSure%C2%AE-Premature-Post-Discharge-Formula/dp/B088L35G4P/ We bought two to three 48 pack of the 2oz bottles at a time looks like they're $78/case now The pre mix stuff is great for night time feeding, especially if the kid will accept formula at room temp like ours did. When they wake up you just grab a bottle from the box, unscrew the lid, screw on a nipple and the kid has formula before they can really fully wake up and then immedialy fall asleep after finishing the bottle. Most times when they woke up for the midnight feeding it was less than 30 seconds from out of bed until the baby started feeding. Largely because we were rushing because we knew if we could feed her immediately she'd go back to sleep right after feeding. Also really handy to drop the baby off with grandma and the pre mix, guarantees the correct liquid to formula ratio and nothing to clean or sterilize If you're on a super tight budget then by all means mix the stuff and wash/sterilized everything, but if you can afford $750 it is a huge time and mind share luxury, even if you only use pre mix for the first six weeks. We got a new changing table dresser from Target for the nursery and set it up yesterday. It smells pretty terrible and my wife is worried about VOCs and offgassing. She's due in 2 weeks and 2 days. We're gonna move it to a spare bedroom and leave windows open/air filter running/etc. How concerned should we be about this? Would just letting it offgas for a day or two be good enough? Thanks!

If your wife is worried about it, sell it and get something else, this is not the time to argue with her, even if she's not arguing

Anything that can reduce your wife's stress level (and yours) about baby's health right at the beginning is a win. My wife's sense of smell is already really sensitive, but it was on overload during pregnancy and infancy. I would return it and specifically state that it smells like chemicals really badly. We had a bookcase that stunk for a couple of weeks, but we left it in our garage to air out. It smells fine now, and it's in our kid's room with an air monitor.

We're early into the pregnancy and wife is already looking for a pregnancy pillow, but the ones on Amazon seem a total crap shoot, with some reviews showing a great looking pillow, and other reviews for the exact same product showing the world's floppiest pool noodle Any brands that worked for you? God everything we're going to want to buy is going to full of scams isn't it?

Yes and. This pregnancy the Babybub pillow is great (used from ~14 weeks, currently 34w). It’s comparatively small but supportive and it lets you turn over without having to disentangle yourself from the pillow tendrils. They give you a small bonus support pillow to prop wherever. Downside is it definitely felt like a dumb amount of money for a specialty pillow, but they do offer codes. I used a C shaped pillow with my second- fine but really extra effort to move to your other side in the middle of the night, which is hard enough towards the end. I used a U shaped pillow with my first and it took up SO much space and felt claustrophobic by the end of the night. No pillow is perfect or will guarantee comfortable sleep, but the support will help.

Different things work better at different stages of pregnancy. And of course some things will or won’t work for her specifically, and it’s impossible to tell in advance. My wife never liked any of the long noodle ones but some of her friends loved them.

I went into a baby store and asked them, they gave me a nice one for like €40. She used it a lot in her second trimester but not the third. I feel like most things I've ever bought on amazon have been exceptionally poor quality so I prefer seeing things in store or buying from a dedicated online retailer. Also I strongly recommend a heated back massage cushion. Hot water bottle and a yoga ball.

yoga ball was very clutch, particularly in the 3rd trimester

4+ years later I'd forgotten why we own a yoga ball

Pretty sure I don’t really want a pillow or ball or whatever, I want some sort of neutral buoyancy tank.

21 weeks and I'm pretty sure they're having hiccups for the first time. Very odd feeling! Still feeling good though most days, fingers crossed it continues.

Rooting for you, Nettle Soup! The hiccups are so fun when you can also see your belly twitching. I never ended up getting a pregnancy pillow but by the eighth month I wished I had. They say to sleep while you still can, before the baby has you up at all hours, but by that time my sleep quality had already gone to complete poo poo. I couldn't roll over without conscious effort so I had to make sure whatever position I was already in would be comfortable and sustainable, since that's where I'd be for the next 6-7 hours. Or at least until my bladder woke me up.

I poke his foot through her belly and he pokes me back ![]() She experienced some intense braxton hicks contractions yesterday morning and oooh boy that was scary.

We never did try to get him to sleep that way because we were sleep authoritarians.

I will be honest, I’m not sure what to do when the ball stops working or he gets too big for it, but i’m assuming everything will just kind of work out by then

I know a couple whose kid needed to be bounced on a yoga ball to sleep for several years, so use in moderation would be my advice

Maybe not the best thread for this, but wife is entering her final days of pregnancy with kid #2, which will be our last. We have a C-section scheduled for the end of the month, and during her most recent OB appointment they offered to tie her tubes while they have her opened up. I had just been planning on getting a vasectomy later this year, and hadn't really considered her getting fixed instead. Is there any reason for her to go through that instead of me? Apparently they need a decision by Monday to get the right person in the OR for that extra step.

Personally, I chose to get my tubes removed. If she is done having kids, it would make sense to just have it done while they’re in there.

Hope it's all going well! I went to the supermarket today and just waking around caused such bad heartburn I legitimately almost threw up. Like, having to hold it in as I rushed outside. I haven't felt more than a touch nauseous at any other point so far in this pregnancy. Never had that before in my life, time to buy a massive bottle of Gaviscon.

Apparently they need a decision by Monday to get the right person in the OR for that extra step. I know I'm way late to this and you already needed to make this decision, but for anyone else asking themselves this question: 1. Removing the tubes during a c-section is a 2-minute addition to the procedure with essentially no increased risk. 2. We've got good evidence now that "ovarian" cancer actually starts from the fallopian tubes so this actually reduces any risk of ovarian cancer in the future. If I were getting a c-section and knew I was done with kids I'd absolutely have the tubes out at the time of the operation.

Yeah, when #2 kept flip flopping between breech and normal towards the end, I thought about going for the detubing if we had to go the C section route. Ended up with a vaginal birth so I got the tubes out earlier this year instead.

Went to tour the hospital and get all the forms filled out in advance, and ended up in for 24 hours because the baby did a backflip and concussed themselves or something on the routine CTG. One to three minutes of lowered heartbeat and a blip on CTG #2 right at the start. 24 hours, four CTGs and a perfect ultrasound later and it hadn't repeated itself so they finally let me go. At least I got the fact I'm NB on the books, and I know now that I cannot rely on them to give me any sort of food I can actually eat, so it was a good test run. Having the hospital bag already packed so my partner could just grab it from home was an A+ decision too. Nettle Soup fucked around with this message at 14:56 on Apr 25, 2025 |

12 week scan came back nominal everything right down the middle Apparently the curve used to measure CRL is called the Hadlock Curve Due date still on track for birth date of first kiddo. Nugget seemed pretty active and restless, baby #1 is very chill girl and was pretty chill during all the ultrasound so I'm curious what happens with baby #2 being a boy and very active boys running in my wife's side of the family

Final verdict: epidurals are magic. Modern medicine is awesome and you should take full advantage of it if you can. Complete gamechanger, inventor deserves a public holiday in their honour. Maybe two. Three if we can swing it. Baby is cool and perfect and beautiful, unlike all other babies which still look like frogs. I'm so glad it's over.
