WILLKOMMEN IN DER FABRIK! The last Electro-Industrial thread spanned 27 pages and wasn't extensively long, but the OP was perma-banned and the first post wasn't very informative. I'm here to rectify this though I thoroughly believe that user Twiin should be doing this. The old thread is located here. Danger - Octopus! posted:"Industrial music is dead. This is a thread about EBM. Wait, no, that just leads to arguments about Front 242 and how there's been no real EBM since about 1994. Terror EBM? No, that sounds silly. Synthpop? No, that makes me think of the Pet Shop Boys. Electropop? Same thing but with tighter trousers and more girls. Futurepop? That just sounds silly. Aggrotech? I don't even know what the gently caress. Post-industrial? As if half the fans of this stuff these days have even HEARD of real old-school industrial bands. Rhythmic noise? We can't call it that, because all the atonal noise fans who like Merzbow and whatever get grumpy. Okay, it's electro-industrial and to hell with any more specific genre names than that." WHAT IS ELECTRO-INDUSTRIAL MUSIC? The short answer that I like to reply with is "Give heavy metal a dance beat." But the term Electro-Industrial refers to two genres of music that are closely correlated in style and encompasses a much broader scope of sub-genres. Generally speaking, Industrial music was a synthesis of heavy metal-inspired music that used electronic overtones. The beats are often harsh, loud, and angry. To quote the wiki, industrial music is a "most abrasive and aggressive fusion of rock and electronic music." Electro is the other end of the spectrum which relies more on synthesizers and music programming. This is the side that produces more club inspired dance tracks. Use of actual instruments is minimal and in most cases Mac laptops are in abundance. A lot of Electro is difficult to distinguish from normal techno and D&B. The most simple way of telling the difference is that Electro has heavier beats and, if lyrics are present, they tend to be a bit dark and melancholy. Naturally, like all other forms of music, it's difficult to apply one definition to all bands of that genre. As for the music itself... THE CROW MEETS ROBOCOP Electro-Industrial culture is just as complex as other sub-cultures. Most followers of the lifestyle use the term "Rivethead" for someone who like Electro-Industrial. A spectrum of where it would lie would look something like a triangle featuring Ravers, Goths, and Metal Heads on the points and Rivetheads somewhere in the middle. Industrial clubs feature a motley crew of attendees from para-military inspired bug stompers to neon light, glowstick twirling go-go girls. It's very dark and vibrantly colorful all at once. Much of the fashion can be seen in the various bands, for example... THIS poo poo WILL gently caress YOU UP! Godmachine fucked around with this message at 21:40 on May 2, 2011 |

You went kind of "old school" if that's at all possible with this vaguely-defined and missed a lot of bigger names through the 2000s: (Too hard to distill most of these bands into one song, but I'll do my best) -Apoptygma Berzerk -Ashbury Heights -Assemblage 23 -Battery Cage -Cesium 137 -Covenant -Decoded Feedback -Din Fiv -Fractured -Funker Vogt -God Module -Haujobb -Icon of Coil -Imperative Reaction -In Strict Confidence -Lights of Euphoria (wanted Burning Ground but not on YouTube) -Mesh -mind.in.a.box -Necessary Response -Pride and Fall -Rotersand -Seabound -SITD -Velvet Acid Christ Some decidedly old-school bands would also include Project Pitchfork, 16volt, Wolfsheim and X Marks the Pedwalk. Some newerish stuff for people who haven't followed closely, I'd highly recommend Ashbury Heights, Battery Cage, Mind.in.a.box, and Seabound. I skipped over a pile of bands I don't really care for, and probably missed a few. Someone else can fill in more blanks. A really young band I like a lot is: -Encephalon I'm a huge fan of In Strict Confidence's style: http://www.last.fm/music/In+Strict+Confidence/+images

I just wanted to avoid making an OP that was a giant list of bands. I think the early to mid 00's was stagnant for industrial. A few gems but not in the quantity that has been seen in the past few years. I'd like to think that the genre is on a nice upswing.

I haven't been into Electro-Industrial in a long time. What is decidedly good these days? I listen to very little now days though if some Combichrist comes on my zune, i'll usually give it a play. I quit listening about the time God Module started to REALLY suck (post-Let's Go Dark) and when I was pretty sure Combichrist were heading into decline (post-Today We Are All Demons). I still listen to (modern) FLA, but the only tracks off of their latest album that I really cared for were Hostage and Stupidity. Haven't listened to Apoptygma Berzerk since Rocket Science. Same goes with In Strict Confidence, with their album Exile Paradise. Assemblage 23 is still one of my favorite bands - is Tom Shear up to any work lately? Angelspit were pretty awesome back in the Krankhaus days, and I suppose Blood Death Ivory had a couple good tracks but I could also tell they were probably on the decline. I really could use some new guys that sound promising. Suggestions welcome! Also might want to link to the FiXT store's website in the OP. I dunno what you guys think of it, but it is pretty much your one-stop shop for all music industrial.

I really think most Apop is awful after Welcome to Earth, but different strokes. I loving love La Parade Monstrueuse by ISC. It's one of the few more recent albums that's gotten me as excited about the genre as the first three bands I mentioned. I liked A23 completely up to Storm. Meta is alright & miss. He has a more recent album, Compass I think, but I find it unlistenable. Still going to see him live in a couple months!

Also Teargas and Plateglass - maybe they don't really fit in the "genre" exactly I guess but they definitely work in the same aesthetic and take it in some really interesting directions.

The best A23 album is Defiance if just because of Maps Of Reality and Blindhammer. I liked Meta, even if it was a little whiny. Raw is pretty much the only seriously stand out track. I agree that Compass is really unlistenable. Also - is anyone else completely loving sick of Combichrist? I wish clubs would substitute TSWFYU for Tractor. My all-time favourites are Front Line Assembly, X-Fusion, Das Ich and Feindflug. Some highlights from FLA: Mortal, Barcode, Infra Red Combat, Colombian Necktie, Evil Playground (bonus amazing remix, possibly my favourite remix of anything ever), Iceolate, Mindphaser, Gun (can only find live versions on youtube wtf), Bio-Mechanic (same), Retribution, Prophecy, Sturm, Future Fail, Armageddon. (Apparently I have too many favourites. Please don't make me talk about Improvised Electronic Device.) Das Ich: Des Satans Neue Kleider, Kain Und Abel, Sonne, Mond Und Sterne, Erde Ruft, Destillat, Reanimat, Engel, Gottes Tod, Kreig Im Paradies, Atemlos, Schwarzes Gift, Zuckerbrot & Peitsche, Seele Tanzt, Tot Im Kopf. (Some people loving hate Das Ich so YMMV.) Feindflug: Feindflug, Alptraum, Lagerhaft, Stukas Im Viser, Gestandnis, Kahle Bedrohung, Roter Schnee, Suchatzki Marsch, Menschenjagd, Leitbild, Truppenschau, Schmerzgrenze, Leere Gräben, Tsfks. (IN BEFORE "LOL GERMANS AND WAR" give it a break.) Aaaand X-Fusion: Let My Body Burn, Left Hand Path, Dear God, Mammonism, Rest In Pieces, Defiled And Raped, Pitch Black, Rotten To The Core, My Inner Storm Blows, Gerasas Demoniac, Bouncer Of The Pearly Gate, I Saw You, Commercial Whore, Last Breath, House Of Mirrors, Rise and Fall, Exspes, Still Breathing. Here's X-Fusion making the best Grendel song into a better X-Fusion song. (There's actually not a single X-Fusion song I don't like but I'm bored now.) The aggrotech scene has been quite weak last year. All releases from "major" aggrotech artists were pretty bland. The new Combichrist was awful, the new Nachtmar was blah and right now I'm a little worried about the new Aesthetic Perfection. I have been really blown away by Heimataerde though, especially the Dark Dance EP. It's a great little 6-tracker with three very different takes on the title track! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGj0Q9UztnI I guess I should also drop a plug for my girlfriend's band, Axxon. It started out as a one-man project in 2007ish and I did a brief stint of backup vocals for the first two live shows in 2009. Since then, they recruited a new second vocalist and my girlfriend does the guitars. They play EBM/industrial with lots of focus on the guitars and plenty of nods to old-school EBM like Front 242 but with plenty of shades of Psyclon Nine and FLA. They're pretty much the only band like this here in Cape Town and they do a drat good job of it! (The first pure-electro release is up for free on last.fm and they're working on a new album with the new lineup right now).

Nice job, this thread is off to a good, informative start Anyway, I love most of this poo poo and I don't have all that much to add to everything you guys have already posted here. However, here are some of my favorites (all links are to sick nasty songs on Youtube): I loving love And One (song showcases both the EBM-y and synthpop sides of the band), new album Tanzomat coming this Friday! gently caress yes! Absurd Minds sounds a lot like a Project Pitchfork knockoff, but nowadays they have a way more distinct sound of their own than before. It's actually a real good band now! Dead When I Found Her is my newest favorite band. The debut is a mindblowingly intricate piece of Skinny Puppy -esque industrial goodness, check that poo poo out NOW. You know what's awesome? Diary of Dreams, that's what (I have no idea what's up with that Nic Cage movie in that video ). Heart-aching melancholy, beautiful piano melodies, longing guitars and absolutely pitch-black electronic soundscapes. New album Ego:X coming out in Summer or so. I saw Solitary Experiments last summer and it was loads of fun. Big rear end synth sounds not unlike VNV Nation or Assemblage 23. I dig the poo poo out of everything the Project Pitchfork mastermind Peter Spilles shits out, including his side projects. Imatem's tracks are composed by Spilles, but most vocals are done by various guest singers. Imatem is more on the synthpoppy side of Pitchfork, whereas Santa Hates You is more about fun, danceable dark electro. The first album is mostly a curiosity, but the second album Crucifix Powerbomb is an astonishingly solid piece of work that everyone should give a listen to. Alright, now for the heavier, more guitar-driven side of this music (or "bands that are like Rammstein" in a silly layman's terms)! Eisbrecher and Megaherz often go hand in hand because of the bands' history. Eisbrecher was formed in 2004 after the singer and guitarist/keyboardist from Megaherz decided the band wasn't all that fun anymore, but Megaherz decided to keep doing their thing. Eisbrecher is generally more electronic and more playful but also more brutal, whereas Megaherz has moved from almost Korn-like sounds on the album "5" to very minimally electronic metal, like their latest album Heuchler. Both bands are working on new albums, Megaherz's one is supposed to be released sometime next autumn. [die!] deserves a mention here, too. The band nowadays has Megaherz's amazing ex-singer from the album "5" and sounds fantastic. Gothminister is from Norway and fuckin' owns. There's something slightly poppy about the Minister's wonderfully dark poo poo, but who the gently caress cares? The band owns even more live, I've seen them once here in Finland and it was easily one of the most energetic and fun concerts I've ever been to. Such passion! New album coming out this March, surprisingly sounds like Mr. Brem has taken some influences from Norway's black metal scene! OOMPH! is probably my favorite band right next to fuckin' Laibach. OOMPH! is one of the original NDH bands, and the early hit Sex basically has all the cornerstones of the sound Rammstein later popularized. Even after 22 years, styles ranging from the first album's raw EBM to insanely brutal stuff from the 90s and from the late nineties' more mature sound to this day's extremely refined, totally unique sound, the band is still at large and in the business of kicking shitloads of rear end. New album is in the works, and it's set to be more electronic and playful than the last couple of ones. And finally, Finland's own pride Turmion Kätilöt. One of the most vicious, destructive bands in the whole drat business, made tongue in cheek and with a fiery passion for awesome music. Think Rammstein, add in even more grotesque lyrics (in Finnish) and violent brutality and you have TK. Band is absolutely amazing live. a cyborg mug fucked around with this message at 09:05 on Mar 1, 2011 |

As I said in the old thread, it's in my opinion probably the band's most solid one this far. More mature songwriting, better lyrics, even more tongue-in-cheek, the band just sounds better than ever before. I didn't think they could top Hades in brilliance but Vedetäänkö vai ei? comes frighteningly close, even though it loses plenty of its meaning if you don't understand the lyrics. By the way, if you're interested in learning what the dudes are saying I could try to translate some of the songs for you. However, you might not realize it from the forgettable English lyrics, but the Finnish ones are surprisingly complex and play with words a lot, so good translations with all the meaning intact might be difficult to make. e: And then I remembered the site turmion-katilot.info already has some crude translations of all the albums apart from the newest one. Thread lacks enough rhythmic noise. Want music that scares people who like Justin Bieber? Look to the Hands Productions and Ant-Zen labels, and the vast array of smaller labels releasing music with chunky beats and loud noises. It's big in Germany. Other places too, but drat the Germans seem to love it. Also it involves nerdy guys with laptops or racks of electronics, peeking nervously at the audience, or sometimes sweaty bald men with their hands in the air. This Morn Omina - tribal trancey electro-industrial. Your raver friends may well like this. You'll have heard One Eyed Man in a club. Not very scary. Really very good. Winterkalte - this is the guy behind the Hands label. Absolutely brutal - they have a CD called "Drum n Noise". The name is pretty much all you need to know. When you lure a goth girl back home with you by claiming you're "really into Mesh", don't put a Winterkalte CD on instead. SKET - More guys with heaps of gear making great music. They're influenced by a lot of the older bands in this subgenre, but they don't sound quite like anyone else. Sonar - made up of Dirk Ivens (Dive) and Eric Van Wonterghem (Monolith), who also double as Absolute Body Control. They make awesome noisy music out of very repetitive loops. See them. Do it. Synapscape - they have an actual singer! Well, a shouter, at least. They're one of the most interesting bands in this subgenre to me, musically - they vary from slightly creepy tracks like the one I just linked, to more clubby ones and others that are pretty groovy. Some other bands you should try: 100blumen, Mono No Aware, Ah Cama Sotz, Iszoloscope, Vromb, ESA, Empusae, Detritus, Greyhound (my favourite current noisy band, to be honest), Heimstat Yipotash and Pow[d]erpussy among many more. Various of the "noisy" labels have branched out in the last few years with the dark cabaret style music of Genevieve Pasquier, for example, or things on various labels that are basically dubstep, ambient and pretty much any other electronic genre you can think of. There are several festivals just for this kind of thing in Europe, most notably Maschinenfest. Also, not noisy, but everyone should listen to Patenbrigade: Wolff and Welle:Erdball. Both have colons in their names, both are very silly, very German and really fun live. P:W have a kitsch DDR Ostalgie and love of industry thing going on; W:E also have a retro analogue synth/chiptune thing going on at times and particularly love the C64, VW beetle and Super-8 camera. And, if you are in the UK and like electro industrial, then come to Infest over the August bank holiday weekend. It's literally the most fun you can have in Bradford! Eat curry, drink alcohol, dance the night away with a venue full of like-minded sweaty music fans. (I skipped about half the bands last year and spent each night dancing to bad 80s music to be honest, oops!) Twiin posted:I won't play Combichrist anymore. Maybe they shouldn't have signed to a scene label if they wanted a wider audience? Besides, Out of Line is a label that has shown that even this "obscure Germanic sub-genre", as Hagström calls it, can have wider than just scene success. Really, look at Out of Line's band lineup: it's full of up-and-coming superstars, already established scene heavyweights or groups on the road to mainstream success. For example, I personally don't like Combichrist at all, but the band is touring with loving Rammstein. And hell, Blutengel's newest album Tränenherz that was released a couple of weeks ago instantly grabbed the #12 spot on the official German sales lists, but that spot was taken with years and years of hard loving work on Chris Pohl's part. Like the man's work or don't, but you have to agree that he's worked his rear end off with all his projects for like twenty years. Ashbury Heights has been making music since what, 2005? Maybe they should've tried entering the Eurovision or something if fame overnight was what Mr. Hagström wanted. It's simply ridiculous to claim they didn't have the success they deserved. The industrial/gothic/electro/whatever scene is gigantic in Germany where Out of Line operates from, and I'm pretty sure the label had a hand in getting them into people's minds and stereo systems. I personally witnessed this guy playing for a crowd ten thousand eager people strong, which I'd say is quite a bit more than most bands that've been performing for five years could even begin to hope for. Yeah, it's the same here in Finland. Really the only industrial band that can pull a mostly full house seems to be Turmion Kätilöt, and that's likely because they appeal to a lot of metalheads as well. For example Project Pitchfork's gig here in autumn had like 150-ish attendees, and that band gets to headline scene festivals alongside acts like And One and Skinny Puppy. I was actually really surprised that there seemed to be slightly more people attending Diary of Dreams' gig last spring than Pitchfork, I had no idea the band even had a fanbase here in the first place. But seriously, if you get the chance, plan a trip to Germany one summer and visit Amphi (for a more contained festival) or Wave Gothik Treffen (for a trillion billion bands scattered across the city for several days). It's pretty insane to see literally tens of thousands of goths and other relevant people dancing to your favorite bands.

I really like some recent electropop bands, but a lot of them seem to turn up in a blaze of scene publicity and moody photoshoots then vanish after an album (probably when they leave university). Need to get back into buying random compilations to find some good obscure bands, but goddamn I've had some bad experiences with lovely compilations with one good track and the rest painfully bad filler or weird remixes of tracks that might otherwise be good. The smaller gigs do have a certain appeal, I guess, because they're more intimate, you can be right up front without being stuck in a platoon of photographers and then get sweaty hugs from the band all night long at the aftershow. I have fond memories of Implant explaining that they had tried fish and chips because it was a scottish tradition so they felt they had to, but they really didn't like it. CAT rear end now!!! posted:Dead When I Found Her is my newest favorite band. The debut is a mindblowingly intricate piece of Skinny Puppy -esque industrial goodness, check that poo poo out NOW. Agreed. Dead When I Found Her sounds more 80's industrial than actual 80's industrial.

gently caress I can't believe I forgot Deathboy (who are so awesome they have their entire catalog available for free online). Their albums (like physical CDs) are obscenely cheap even to ship to the US and they sent me a bunch of extra stuff too. Very cool guys, I'd love to see them gain a bigger following Stateside.

CAT rear end now!!! posted:But seriously, if you get the chance, plan a trip to Germany one summer and visit Amphi (for a more contained festival) or Wave Gothik Treffen (for a trillion billion bands scattered across the city for several days). It's pretty insane to see literally tens of thousands of goths and other relevant people dancing to your favorite bands. This. I went to Wave Gothik Treffen one year and was absoutly blown away. I'm from Colorado, where most acts either don't bother to stop or come mid week. Going to Leipzig and being surrounded by goth culture was surreal. Friday I'll be seeing Genitortures with Hanzel und Gretyl/Iconocaust. The Venue is pretty small, but it has pretty good sound. I'm excited.

Is there a roll call for who's going to be at Kinetik this year? I'll be there for sure.

Hmm, does dexy corp_ fit here? They're a French band, definitely noticible in the vocals, some of the lyrics don't make a lick of sense, but they sound awesome. I took the recommendation on a whim from a friend who called 'em 'basically cyberpunk metal', and now I can't stop listening to them. Reive fucked around with this message at 07:30 on Mar 4, 2011 |
