Listening to Da Octopusss right now, and just sounds like lo-fi generic electro to me. I like the gimmick though, and bet it sounds good in a club or live.

Late to this, but: FLA - Airmech is really good. I really like their early stuff (and only recently got into them, so worked my way back and then stopped around 97), and I didn't overdo it on the dubstep (just Planet Mu stuff), so I don't hear anything out of place in the album. (The Tangerine Dream vibes on the intro were jarring though). I'm totally OK with no lyrics. and this is a nice direction from FLA for me. Thanks thread!

I love them for about 15 minutes then my ears need a break. It's actually exhausting somehow, in a way that other industrial bands aren't. Still, I really dig their grinding, dystopian sound and I'd like to hear about other bands that are similar. They are terrifying (in a good way) with a little :420:.

Maybe try Broken Note? They're sorta industrial-tinged dubstep and are pretty brutal at times.

I mean like, what kind of equipment should I start with i.e. DAW or physical workstation, is there any kind of music theory I should know before getting into it and what are good channels to get exposure once I can start producing? Sorry if I'm being really dry or overly vague, it's just that I'm a complete and utter noob when it comes to production, and I've not the slightest idea how to start making music.

Edit:

I get the feeling these are not very good questions and I probably ought to resort to google.

There is a good thread about this in the musician's lounge that you should check out. But here's the summary: Ableton Suite can do everything you need.

Reason is easier to understand if you know how hardware gear works. If you don't then they're both just interfaces to learn.

It doesn't expressly cover what you're wanting to do, but Dance Music Manual has an extensive section on what all the little knobs and sliders in your synth's interface do and why and how they're used together. There's even a section that talks about different drum and instrument sounds and how to build them on a synth. It won't get you all the way, but it'll give you a baseline understanding of what the gently caress you're doing and let you do more than just surf through presets. It does kind of assume that you're working on hardware instead of software, but most VST synths that I've seen use faux-hardware interfaces anyway.

I mean, maybe it's not really all that useful- I'm not a musician, just a guy who likes dicking around uselessly once in awhile.

I don't think that's true really. IMO Reason is more intuitive purely due to it's modelling of wires and knobs and sliders. However, it doesn't model any actual real-world devices (there are some plugins that do however), so I don't believe it's true that if you know how hardware gear works then you'll be happier with Reason. Infact I think that would hinder you because you'd expect certain things that just aren't there.

The amazing documentation for Reason and derth of video tutorials also make it a lot better for newbies.

This isn't really the best place for it though, I just thought your assertation was wrong.

Right, 'wires' and 'knobs' and all those other skeuomorphic interface elements that make up reason are things designed to make it easier for people who are used to plugging 'wires' and turning 'knobs' on hardware gear. But if you've never plugged a wire in anything or turned a knob on a synth, then it's not any easier to learn how to plug different output wires into different input hardware modules than it is to choose "track 4" on an output drop-down menu.

I'm not sure that's true. I think that most people will understand, or at least be more willing to experiment and mess with, physical-looking dials and buttons. People deal with those type of things day in and day out in every day life. But the abstractions of traditional software are like a completely different language. It just fosters experimentation and fun more.

Just get a DAW and go from there, theory helps immensenly. Invest in hardware when you've know what you are doing and feel like it might add something. Stay away from gearslutz.

You're right, it's a completely different language. That's exactly my point. If you're someone who freaks out because you don't know how to plug a TV into a DVD player, but you are an Excel wizard, you might do better with Cubase than Reason. If you're someone who spends all day plugging things into different things and adjusting knobs, Reason will seem intuitive. If you're workflow-oriented, Ableton is easy to get. You follow me? The lesson that Apple has taught everyone over the last ten years is that skeuomorphic interfaces are only 'intuitive' when people are expecting a skeuomorphic interface.

I like XP8 but I just wish they were a little more...harder? I don't know if that's the right word. I group them with a lot of bands that just need that little bit extra for their songs to be great dance hits, but they never quite get there.
