I'll admit that I've never done much more than dick around with some oscillators and such, but isn't making your own sounds rather than just using presets kind of part of the point?

Depends entirely on what you want to do, of course. And even if you do usually make your own sounds, it's alright to use a familiar sound for some specific purpose, for the cheese factor or just because it suits your needs or whatever once in a while, right? I mean people don't usually don't go around complaining about 808 samples or stuff like that.

So as long as we're playing "What's that oontz oontz thing called," is there a term for the kind of "harsh EBM" lyrics where the singer sounds like he's already blown his voice out screaming all night, and also like he's about to throw up? Like this. And can it stop? Ever?

I think that they lean more towards a heavier Depeche Mode than outright industrial, but I'm freaking out over Legend's album Fearless. It's one of the best things I've heard in a long time. Maybe it's because my favorite Depeche Mode album is Ultra, but man, what a great album. Apparently their concerts are amazing since everyone I know who's seen them speaks very highly of the show.

I hesitate to call their concert, as a concert, amazing. But their music stands out live. edit: There was nothing particularly impressive about their show really, though I suppose they had a bit of an approaching-SWANS-like-intensity. Just they sounded pretty great and unique. And it stood out considering most people weren't familiar with the material.

Poor vocal style is usually so drenched in effects and pitch-shifting (Suicide Commando et al) that it's not noticeable, but the sound in this song is usually what's hiding under all the filters.

I think it looks a lot worse than it really is. And I don't think it's all self-inflicted. That stuff with the record-label may have been a bit of immaturity, but it's theoretically possible they were promised a bunch of (ridiculous to anyone realistic) poo poo that just wasn't delivered. He sounds more mature now. We'll see.

So I'm hooked on the new Distorted Memory. Went to see Aesthetic Perfection last night. I'd seen them at Resistanz, but this was in a much smaller venue where the stage was just a very slightly raised area of the floor and wasn't set back at all, so it was pretty drat intimate. Goddrat Daniel Graves is a charismatic frontman up close! It wasn't too well attended unfortunately, but they put on a great show regardless, and he engaged with the crowd a hell of a lot, and really got people going. Definitely worth seeing live if you get the chance!

As far as I know, the band name "Necessary Response" is because Daniel Graves was part of IR's touring lineup a few years ago. Don't know if the two groups ever actually toured "together" though.

Chumbawamba's Tubthumber album is the only angry industrial pop ska album I can think exists. Are there any other bands that have put out similar to this? I've been listening to it for 16 years now and it never gets old, but I've always wondered if I've missed something. They are not an industrial band, but all the elements of this album and the tone easily falls under the umbrella of today's definition of the genre. I actually feel it is the embodiment of industrial rock and come to think of it, I've actually listened to this album more than I have most of the essential industrial rock albums of the mid 90s. It is a frustrated semi nihilistic snide sarcastic look a social climate where you're getting hosed by the government, life, whatever, turn to drugs. Let's get drunk. One of the bands that I've always loved since Back In The Day is Flesh Field, and it makes me really sad that the band split up. I love the male/female vocals and the slightly video-gamey-without-being-chiptune synth sound Are there any bands around at the moment who have a remotely similar sound?
