When they played all those songs from their Singles and people started jumping up and down and yelling poo poo like "Play a fast one" during songs off Rainbow and Smile, I knew the band wasn't gonna be doing much for me anymore.

I don't understand all the hate for the singles - "8" may be a better post-Pink single than "Floorshaker," and Vol. 3 is pretty great, too. I get that "H.M.A." and "Black Original" are out there (and good lord, how many versions of Black Original are there now) as far as Boris goes, but they aren't like "end of the world" awful. I'd rather listen to them than the crust-rock version of Vein, for example.

Just look at it like people who won't listen to Electric Wizard post Dopethrone. Some times a band releases a record or two so good, it's hard to move on.

I personally love everything EW has done, but I know a fair amount of people who consider each record afterwards to be a slow decline.

You take your chances when you check out one of their shows. I saw them in 2008 with Torche opening, and Torche absolutely blew them off the stage. Their energy was so incredible that Boris's set was like watching paint dry by comparison. They did play some more rocking stuff, but the drummer kept yelling into his headset mic and ruining the songs.

loving Boris' drummer ruined all three of their sets I've seen by doing this. They were pretty great other than that, but it's so distracting and loud. Ugh.

Nice. Just found this gem of a comment in a related video:

I don't understand why there are so many lovely bands out there. I mean, seriously.... name your band Bongripper, name your album Satan Worshipping Doom, play heavy as gently caress doom-riffs, and put titties and fire on your album cover. This isn't rocket science.
edit: Also if you google Satan Worshipping Doom, this thread comes up higher than the metal archives entry (for me at least).

edit2: I'm going to just listen to Bongripper all night now

Bongripper recorded some dark ambient track called Glaciers a while back, I THINK some DJ got his hands on an early mix but I can't find it anywhere. They haven't decided what to do with the track yet though.

Hope to god they get that UK tour going again next year.

Let me introduce myself, I'm a social disease.

I haven't seen Dystopia mentioned in here, and they're one of my favorite bands of all time and deserve more recognition. I'm not entirely sure this band belongs in this thread, they're definitely sludgey, but some of their songs are pretty fast and deathy/crust punkish. They might be too intense compared to most of the bands here but not all of their songs are like that.

Anyway, they have amazing intros and cool riffs and a great drummer to boot and are pretty technical and skilled, especially for a crust band. Their sound is great and they use a lot of samples that add a cynical misanthropic mood to their music. (but not in a bad way) They're definitely not sloppy musicians and add lots of little touches that take their music over the top. Everyone of their cd's is outstanding in my opinion.

If you at all like any Thrash, Crust punk, anything like that at all, AS WELL as liking Sludge, Doom, etc then you should love them.

Anyway, without further ado I give you Dystopia. These to me are some of their standout tracks.

1. Now and Forever (My all time favorite)

Dystopia is A-loving-MAZING and definitely a favourite on my end, but I wouldn't say they're a band for this thread. Definitely more of a thrash/death/speed metal thing. Granted, they experiment enough to be loosely applicable anywhere, but that doesn't really make them a stoner/doom/sludge band.

Dyna Soar

^ Eh I dunno, they're def sludgey if in the crusty grindcore end of the spectrum. I'd say they fit in here if they fit in any genre. Same with Acid Bath or Soilent Green I guess, only with death metal instead of crust.

One of my fav bands, too.

Acid Bath is wicked too, and yeah Dystopia's sludgy in plenty of parts, therefore I'm gonna shaddap now. They still fall under thrash/death/speed on my iTunes, though. Reminds me of Cattle Press, actually. Found out about them from a split 12" with Agoraphobic Nosebleed years back, and it's some serious thrashy sludge I was not expecting on an automated grindcore b-side.

I'm not the first to go cross posting and spamming my own horn, but I was recommended to post this here by a fellow goon. I play in a noise doom band named Solstorm who have just released its debut album.

It was recorded at our rehearsal studios, mixed by me and the bassist/singer and mastered by fellow goon Todd McHenry/Hogscraper. It's been a long time coming, we started the recording February 2010, and it got released in Norway yesterday. International (European?) release dates are 06.06, though it can be ordered from our label in Norway.

I don't think anyone has brought them up yet, but does anyone listen to The Body? They only have one album, and I just heard it the other day. It's really interesting arty sludge that incorporates ethereal choral vocals and has some really neat production. They're playing Le Poisson Rouge in NYC in June backed by a full choir and I can't wait to see them. Between them, Sleep, Torche, and Melvins, June is going to be the best month ever.

I just wanted to chime in to confess my love for Julie Christmas, one of the few female vocals in heavy music that I like. I dunno if she counts for the thread... Battle of Mice is post metal, and there's definetely something sludgy in Made Out of Babies (especially in their first album... there's a heavy Melvins influence there), but I dunno about her latest solo album. But either way, right now I feel like I could listen to her sing with just about whatever playing the background. Kinda like Dax Riggs from Acid Bath, I guess.

I loving love The Body. All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood was one of my top 5 in 2010. If you are interested in them, they have another album... well, it's not really much of an album... it's more like the special features part of a Blu-ray. It's called Compilation.

It's got the original demos of most of the songs on All the Waters... as well as some other originals and a collection of covers ranging from Judas Priest to Black Flag to Sinead O'Connor.

Totally worth it if you are into them. Also, I am drat jealous of you, I don't think they've ever made it to my neck of the woods.
