You can figure it out by ear pretty easily, and that's essential for getting the timing right.

Right on, I'll have to spend some time with sometime soon. I wish I still had the free time that I had when I was a youngster. I swear I'm not just lazy. The newish Ancestors is pretty good and a maybe a touch different than previous stuff, maybe a bit more Pink Floydish. Here's the first track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhVHYeO7bU8

So i'm not sure if this is cool to post, but I noticed a list of goon bands in the OP, so I thought I might mention the band I'm in. We're a stoner metal band called Giant Monster Attack. We recently released our first album which you can listen to at our bandcamp: http://giantmonsterattack.bandcamp.com/ It would be cool to hear what some of you guys think of our stuff. Just so this is not all about our band, I'd also like to sing the praises of a local band called Lords Of Bastard: http://lordsofbastard.bandcamp.com/ They're stoner/doom with a hammond keyboard and should probably get more attention then they do. They're latest album Cuddles is really good.

It's not a song that you can really learn from tabs or sheet music, because it's all based around following the drum patterns. Luckily, you don't have to worry much about scales, since all the riffs are in modes of C. Koldenblue posted:One of these days I'm going to try and transcribe the bass parts for that song. I'd really love to have a look at the actual sheet music they used. I figured most of it out when I was in my "youtube bass cover" phase, so if you need any tips, just ask. The guitar solos are easily the most difficult sections of the song for bass, because Al throws in a ton of insane fills that don't repeat.

I've meandered my way, taste-wise, into hearing Dopesmoker for the first time last year. Since then I'm insatiable and can't believe all the great poo poo I've heard in the past year: -Anything Matt Pike is apart of -Electric Wizard -Bison BC -Black Cobra -Orange Goblin -Black Breath -Acid King (!) -Conan (the Monnos album... I swear they are detuned to Bb and using .15s) -Windhand -way more than I can remember In particular: the first two HoF records are perfect. Unreal sound and energy. Often have to force myself to not listen to those albums sometimes so as not to wear them out in my brain. All HoF records are glorious, however... some more than others.

The thrashier stuff that Pike is into now is good, but for me nothing compares to the all-out assault of Surrounded by Thieves. Des Kensel should win some kind of award for his playing on "The Yeti." You (all y'all, actually) would probably like Acrimony. They're not mentioned in the OP, but in retrospect I think they may be one of the best early "stoner rock" bands. I hadn't listened to Tumuli Shroomaroom for a while, and it blew my mind a little bit today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHBGwhmokJ4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0lp7kgK9M0 edit: Actually, it seems like I made the same recommendation back in January. I am on a mad High on Fire binge as of late. I always liked them but never was really into them but I've started listening through all their albums and they're all brilliant. Snakes for the Divine is probably the weakest but there's still some cool tracks on it. The rest of the albums are gold though.

Are there any bands reminisce of Electric Wizard except instrumental? I really like Electric Wizard and their vocals but every other band I find with the same sort of groove doesn't really catch me on the vocals.

Listening to Earth Rocker now, I really like it. It's a bit by-the-numbers, but it has way more energy than Strange Cousins, which kind of falls asleep after during Abraham Lincoln and doesn't wake up until Sleestack Lightning. They sound like they're enjoying themselves again and making me want to see them live again. Mastering isn't as nice and smooth as Strange Cousins though.

Really miss the growly vocals, but I definitely like what they've done with the vocal harmonies. Bass and drums are as kickass as ever, and the production is very nice. It's going to be a grower, I think.

Way back in the thread some people were coming up with amusing band names, and one of them caught my eye: Slothful Bong. I turned it into a little instrumental solo thing, and it's about time I shared some of what I've been working on. Since it's lazy-day stuff for me there's no overarching theme, just sludgy music. http://www.last.fm/music/Slothful+Bong/ E: Most of it is with 8-string guitars tuned to drop-E1 (same note as the lowest on a standard 4-string bass), with a couple songs a step higher on a 6-string at F#1 The Gasmask fucked around with this message at 12:44 on Mar 20, 2013 |

This band crosses enough genres that I'm skeptical to post it in here, but goddamn, you guys have to hear Inter Arma if you haven't already. Can't get enough of this. It just came out on Relapse. Their Bandcamp page. The song "'sblood" is the one that's being touted around the usual metal circles right now with a lot of positive responses. Here's a Pitchfork review for the album. Not the best review, but nails what I dig about it.
