Saw Nothing and Swirlies last night on their current tour. Swirlies were appropriately noisy and chaotic, with vocal choices more akin to the MBV style of "just another layer in our sound." They were fun. Nothing were blistering. The new material is really great live, and I dig their dual vocal sound. I didn't take any pictures because I was too busy getting my face melted. There are not many dates left, but totally worth a go if they're hitting your area.

Browsed around on Drowned in Sound and stumbled upon this list from November 2018: Some Velvet Mixtape: 2018 in Reverb, Delay, Distortion and Drone #2 links to previous entries in the series at the bottom of the article I haven't listened to everything yet, but there's a lot of good stuff, and I believe only one repeat from the Pop Matters list (Soft Science). I also shouldn't be as excited as I am for a new Amusement Parks of Fire album. Loved the EP from last year, and the first track from the new album sounds great.

Another year, another digital music batch purchase. Got a $50 google play gift card so I picked up several albums from my rather large wishlist I accumulated since last year. I may buy more, but I need to be careful because I don't want my music library going over 59 GB, as I currently have 64GB storage for backups/phone usage and I don't feel like getting new ones right now. Anyway, not a whole lot of stuff that would fit here this go-round, but I did buy Ride's Nowhere and the rest of Nothing's discography (I only had Tired of Tomorrow previously). Ride is pretty interesting. Hadn't heard any of their stuff before, but I recognized the name from a shot of a gig flyer from Failure's 2004 documentary. Apparently they opened for Ride in LA 1990-ish, when they still used a fretless bass. This Ride album kind of reminds me of that meloncholy-ish 80's/90's style of britpop, like The Smiths or the few songs I've heard from Blur before they did the "whoo hoo" song. Very different from MBV, my only other exposure to early shoegaze. Guess I need to try some Jesus And Mary Chain next. What else would you all consider shoegaze essentials from that same time period? Oh, also forgot I bought Film School's Hideout. Many years ago I listened to Pandora at work and they would often play me "Compare" from that album, so I wrote it down and bought it later as a one-off from ITunes. Great song, I still like it a lot, but I don't like having one-offs in my library (unless they're b-sides from singles or something) since album-oriented rock or whatever is pretty dead and that's how I got into music in the first place. So I'm trying to rectify that. I now have 23 hours of shoegaze/dream pop in my library, that's mostly recommendations from you guys and Airiel's complete discography (I ![]() Fart of Presto posted:Browsed around on Drowned in Sound and stumbled upon this list from November 2018: Thanks for this, I listened to all of it. For your Jesus and Mary Chain fix, Honey's Dead would be an excellent entry point. They're breaking away from the "drugged out Scottish kids with busted amps" sound of Psychocandy and digging into a more polished leaner sound. You should definitely check out the earlier material though. Darklands is one of my favorite records ever, and it's a very stripped down sound for those guys compared to their first LP. Also, check out Pubic Fruit from Curve. More wall of sound shoegazey goodness with Toni Halliday's dreamy vocals. Curve toured with JAMC and Spiritualized in the early 90's, so those three bands are definitely covering some of the heavy hitters of that scene. hatelull fucked around with this message at 15:57 on Jan 25, 2019 |

Just saw on the social medias that Failure and Swervedriver are soon to announce dates for a forthcoming to, so I definitely say HELL YEAH to that action. I will start burning 90's Alt-Rock CD's at the stroke of midnight in an effort to steer the tour to my city. Unrelated: I love you J. Spaceman and I buy all your records but playing Dallas and Austin while ignoring Houston is super not cool.

Cuckoo is a strong contender, and the Recoil track is tight but THIS is the best Curve track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJukLbmHqxY I could lose myself forever in this song. Also, you lot ever dig on Submarine? I discovered them on this very same Volume comp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1eWSP0CwuY Possibly more in line with Mercury Rev or Flaming Lips but it was definitely scratching a shoegazey it for early 90's me. Sadly, I think their stuff is long out of print but they have some solid albums. "Jodie Foster" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWpe2T0GXe8 They do a solid cover of Galaxie 500's "Tugboat" as well, but not easily found on youtube.

Crossposting this from the indie rock thread because it probably qualifies more as shoegaze and noise pop: This new HEALTH album is a wild, dark and transcendent journey. I bruised the gently caress outta my thigh from drumming along to this thing so hard while driving hahaha A+ I know we're not even 2 full months into the year yet, but this is easily my album of the year so far. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX0v4sm5dYc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNAySFS3Msk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO_EeUBoNOw

Can't believe I'm saying this, because afaic for the last decade HEALTH has been able to do no wrong- Get Color, USA Boys, High Pressure Days, Tears and MP3, Death Magic, Euphoria, all loving fire- but I'm disappointed by it. I was worried Jupiter's departure would take something special from the band, and now the new album feels dark in a cliched, almost high school goth way to me. It's neither as creatively noisy nor as catchy as their other stuff. Without all the clever electronics it seems like they were trying to put the guitar a little further forward, but instead of maybe getting something like Al Jourgensen on Rabies they ended up with a sound that's less brutal and more... conventional? Gonna give it another spin or two to see if I'm missing something, but right now I'm just shocked I'm not into it. Electro-Boogie Jack fucked around with this message at 04:01 on Feb 9, 2019 |

Rageaholic Monkey posted:I'll definitely agree that Death Magic was the better album and had catchier/poppier songs (for as poppy as a noise outfit can sound), but I'm still very into this one. It's abrasive and dreamy, and as a longtime fan, I dig it, but I can also understand why you don't! I loved this new album! Decimation was my fav. Kinda feels like something you would listen over some footage of a wasteland.
