Schremp Howard posted:They played for University of Pittsburgh's radio station WPTS's spring show on campus in Oakland. I'm a student that DJs there, so it was pretty sweet. We also had Man Man here in the fall. All of the bands listed here are incredible. I mean, they're almost all punk/rap (except Cloud Nothings, though Attack on Memory definitely has some emo/Wipers sounds to it), but people should check all of them out anyway.

The band broke up, Justin's girlfriend dumped him, he got sick with mono, and then he moved back to Wisconsin and recorded his first album, much of which was written in North Carolina. The other three guys stayed behind and relocated to Durham and continued on as Megafaun. I think they're just as compelling as Bon Iver and in some ways are a little more interesting. And if you enjoy pop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CBBdOk4Qic The Love Language are also from Raleigh and make some ridiculously awesome, catchy music and are label mates on Merge Records with Arcade Fire/Superchunk/The Magnetic Fields/Wild Flag/M. Ward/Spoon/Wye Oak/too many other great bands to mention. I'll stop ranting about North Carolina bands now. Also came here to warn everyone about the new Beach House record. I've had the privilege of hearing it in advance. If you're into them, you will be very, very pleased.

Vashti Bunyan is an artist I've been listening to a lot recently. She's got this beautiful haunting voice that just never gets old. Nothing too complex about the sound, but it all works together to create something that's I just keep playing. Pretty strange career too, after her first album failed to take off, she got discouraged and gave up on the whole thing. Over the next 30 years, she gained a cult following and copies of the album became a collector's item. After figuring out that people actually liked her poo poo, she started recording again.

I've listened to Diamond Day a lot over the last ten years or so, but never got round to checking out her newer stuff. You've reminded me about her - thanks! EDIT: There's a record that my girlfriend picked up in a second hand store a few years ago that we both forgot about - Fields - Everything Last Winter. I put it on the other day on a train journey and I actually really liked it (the first few tracks at least.) Apparently they split up not long after that album, but I'm wondering if anybody knows what their members went on to do or if there are any good bands that are a bit similar. ineptmule fucked around with this message at 00:18 on Mar 22, 2012 |

I hope you all already know about Highlife. Technically a one-man-band composed of Sleepy Doug Shaw from the collaboration White Magic, Highlife is a moniker which has produced only one recording so far, an EP called Best Bless:![]() But it's one of my favorite collections of music. It's mainly Shaw singing and playing layers of fingerpicked guitar against stomping drums in a Brooklyn homage to the titular West African "highlife" genre of music. It's somewhat abstract and built on repetition, but never wanders into electronic regularity, and instead I get this sense of cyclic emotion from the three main songs of the EP, like it captures the loops of devotion and delusion that people fall into. I might be far too into it, but check it out. http://youtu.be/GOp9SBe8m7g http://youtu.be/Qp65RAQUZJw

Possibly everyone already knows about Wild Beasts since they've been gaining in popularity lately, but I haven't seen them mentioned anywhere around here and they are too good not to share. The closest act that I can think to compare their sound to is probably Elbow, but with more of an electronic feel. The latest album Smother(2011) is the best place to start; I recommend listening to it in order as the concept/story it tells is vital to enjoying it. It has a theme of dark, obsessive love that makes me think of Lolita (although that may just be because I read it recently). Here are some of the standout tracks from the album: Bed of Nails http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZaevasFRUg&ob=av2e Loop the Loop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r07W...feature=related End come too soon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv1RRV_Iov8

I looked up the surf pop tag to see which of my bands fit it, so not really sure if these exactly fit in but: Dum Dum Girls, Les Savy Fay and No Age? Also since you list Wavves maybe try some other noise pop bands like The Jesus & Mary Chain, Sleigh Bells, The Men, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and so on?

This Oneohtrix Point Never is strangely amazing to listen to. I listened to it on a late night drive home this past weekend and it created such a weird atmosphere, basically giving me tunnel vision as I listened to it. At first I really hated it, thought it was pretentious glitchy nonsense but after giving it 2 more tries I'm actually really liking it. I felt the same way about James Blake's album last year but it grew on me and now I love it. Anyone else gave it a listen? The wikipedia page on how it was made is kinda interesting, and every reviewer gave it high marks. quote:Replica is described as a song cycle based around lo-fi audio procured from television advertisement compilations. Lopatin says, "[It] has as much to do with environmental, broadcasted, and club sounds as it does with more direct musical influences." [14] The cover is an illustration by Virgil Finlay from the pulp magazine Weird Tales. It depicts a vampire looking at himself in a mirror.[15]

I put this album on my ten best last year just for the atmosphere it creates. It is a great album but like any other sample heavy modified "IDM" it needs a place, it's a great night album and a great Google maps album (throw it on while you browse the world, it works great). While driving to it can really throw you for a loop blending the lights of the outside world with the auditory chamber you're riding in. I do have a few criticisms though, it's way to short and his other albums are nowhere near as composed as Replica. If you brushed it off before definitely give it a try.

So I've been turned on to the Avett Brothers, and I really like their album Four Thieves Gone, but when I go to look for more stuff it looks like their stuff gets less banjoey and more sappy with time. I was hoping someone could recommend some folk bands that have some solid banjo/harmonica stuff, or just some more upbeat folk stuff in general. I like the weird punk/folk sound the Avett Brothers had and I want more of that, but my own forays into the genre (never listened to folk stuff before) aren't turning up a whole lot.

Pandercakes is a smallish (im guessing by facebook page) pop band from Columbia , SC. They have one (free!) album so far titled "Paint by Numbers". They have a thick sound but not muddled . Anyway listening to it is much easier than reading my poor description so this is the title track of the album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdP-...&feature=relmfu - its catchy as heck!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6l5...&feature=relmfu - another song that represents them well Another great Columbia artist is Matt Cothram who leads coma cinema and elvis depressedly and is involved with some other side projects as well. His Coma Cinema stuff reminds me a lot of Elliott Smith. Elvis Depressedly is similiar stylistcally but utilizes more "noise , especially his album "save the planet kill yourself" which is very shoegazey. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5fx...feature=related - is from an earlier album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHpR...feature=related - is off his more recent album , blue suicide. Two links from his side project elvis depressedly http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dORuv4klic - sorta similiar to his coma cinema stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFGA...feature=related
