If you mouse over it in the smileys lookup, the tooltip says "FLIEZ"

That might have something to do with it.

Their comment confused me at first, too. They mean the mouseover on this page.

VVVV The closest thing I remember was a folder on each side and a piece of paper twirling through the space between them.

Wasn't that also the graphic in older versions of Windows when you were downloading things? Or at least, wasn't it similar? I seem to recall flying folders or pieces of paper floating across the screen.

There used to be a few graphics like that, and yeah they were paper flying between things. It was mostly used for copying files but there was a download one as well.

Bought by the folks who are posting in the Dutch thread: Kaaskop rondjeruk en Teutoonse zelfhaat.

There was a comic by a Belgian cartoonist which showed a king giving a speech that just consisted of the word "Tetten" all over again (it's Flemish dialect for "tits"). On the last panel of the comic, one of the knights listening says something like "That is the man I want to serve! From now on, his word is my command!"

I went to college in Worcester, so I should know this one.

Some dude in Worcester was paid $45 to improve morale at an insurance company. Since it was 1963, rather than do trust falls or team building activities or whatever, he made a picture of a smiling face on a yellow circle. Somehow someone saw this and decided to sell crappy buttons based on that throughout the 70s.

But none of that has anything to do with the :) emoticon. That's there because Wal-Mart bought it as part of a viral ad campaign.

Both of those are left over from YCS. The first was based on somebody's avatar:

And the second on the fact that all PC gamers pirate everything they play.

This was actually one of the saner suggestions for a smiley from the Sonic & Friends get Trolled Thread - the one that brought us :fut:. A lot of us are familiar with the phrase "Take a chill pill", but it actually refers to the author of the comic saying "Chill your pill" in a blog post to an impatient fan. The thread naturally latched onto the phrase (as they do with a lot of his other malapropisms) and the smiley was eventually made & purchased.

Thankfully, it's a lot less of an in-joke than :fut: and actually has applications outside of the thread. Lots better than the other possible smiley depicting Knuckles smoking his Smart Weed. I guess I could see TCC using it if it's ever bought?

I think it was an old GBS thread, where goons made 3D animations of the smilies. There are a bunch of those videos, including one that I can't seem to find right now where :frog: vomits sunglasses onto :smugdog: or something like that.
