I went to college in Worcester, so I should know this one. Some dude in Worcester was paid $45 to improve morale at an insurance company. Since it was 1963, rather than do trust falls or team building activities or whatever, he made a picture of a smiling face on a yellow circle. Somehow someone saw this and decided to sell crappy buttons based on that throughout the 70s. But none of that has anything to do with the emoticon. That's there because Wal-Mart bought it as part of a viral ad campaign.

This was actually one of the saner suggestions for a smiley from the Sonic & Friends get Trolled Thread - the one that brought us . A lot of us are familiar with the phrase "Take a chill pill", but it actually refers to the author of the comic saying "Chill your pill" in a blog post to an impatient fan. The thread naturally latched onto the phrase (as they do with a lot of his other malapropisms) and the smiley was eventually made & purchased.Thankfully, it's a lot less of an in-joke than and actually has applications outside of the thread. Lots better than the other possible smiley depicting Knuckles smoking his Smart Weed. I guess I could see TCC using it if it's ever bought?
