I made this one for the yospos picture thread a few days ago. Someone offhandedly asked to combine :usa: and :stonk: and I just happened to have photoshop open at the time. I don't know who bought it though.

I got the idea for :shepspends: from :shepicide: and generally watching the retrogames and steam threads months ago (last year in fact, I think). I did share it in the retrogames thread when I first made it, and then promptly forgot all about it until about two months ago when I finally purchased it.

This definitely came from the Mass Effect 2 thread. I remember because it started a smilie making craze that left us with :legion: :liara: :turianass: :tali: and probably some others that I can't remember. That thread was a crazy circlejerk basically led by Aristobolus (sp?) who bought all those smilies, but it was a lot of fun regardless.

Yeah, Aristobulus bought a shitton of Mass Effect smilies for reasons we're still not entirely sure of. He also blew a bunch of money buying people avatars in that thread. Guy had way more money than sense. There is also :edi: :zaeed: :sicknasty: I thought there was a :wrex: one too but maybe not.

:signings: What is it with LPs and buying smilies and avatars? I've been reading Lizard Wizard's Oblivion OP and it seems that half the posters have Sterv avatars (or :airquote:stervatars:airquote: if you will), and :sterv: must've been bought like a day after the LP started.

used to be a thread tag in YCS, and there was a Wrex version of :frogout: floating around but no one put down money to make it a smiley.

I think the Let's Play subforum gets like a ridiculous amount of all SA's traffic, like a 20% or something, so it generating a ton of smilies isn't that surprising really. Also factor in the cult-like following some threads get.

Excuse me but I didn't buy the smilies, and I didn't even buy my own avatars. My avatar got changed back and forth from Liara to mocking avs, based upon whether or not the person buying the av liked me or not.

Lots of things you can mock me for, but blowing money on SA like that isn't one of them!

I don't have any idea who it was that bought all the ME smilies either, nor do I even know if it was all the same person. I think the smilies were all bought by the same person, though.

Not saying that one's bad (though I could've phrased what I said better), just that given how popular the DR threads are we could've been flooded with emotes. As to the avatar, some mysterious benefactor/malefactor slapped it on me in HelloWinter's Phoenix Wright LP.

I'm reading the drat thing and I still thought the amount of effort that went into ruining people's day so spectacularly was amazing, and followed in a proud SA tradition. FYAD was named SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE for a while after the 6th Harry Potter book came out, wasn't it?

AG3 bought all the emoticons in the ME2 thread, and randomly several people's avatars (like mine). He justified it by saying each emoticon cost him much less than getting a pizza delivered to his place and he did most of his dark work over the span of a year. People did keep making them and then egging him on to buy them though. I know he didn't really like the Tali or Zaeed ones but people just asked him nicely.

In general avatars were selling like hotcakes in that thread. Tons of people got theirs from Annakie's screenshot archive, random bits of posted fan art and whatever else. I wouldn't be surprised if the forums made a few grand off that thread and then a couple grand later when most posters moved on.

That happened around the Harry Potter stuff too. Someone bought people avatars that had false spoilers in big flashing letters. I don't know if they were intentionally false or not, but I know at least one person who got really upset when I showed them a thread.

Same thing with the Game of Thrones thread during the S03E09 meltdown. There were actual spoiler avatars with some fake-outs mixed in for some reason.

Skyler is actually a crypto-mermaid, that plane that Q let crash because he was distraught about Picard spurning his advances he actually sends to a mysterious island that may or may not be purgatory and it was all a fever dream brought on by the morphine Walt was taking for his incurable cancer.

Then he wakes up next to Patrick Duffy, pan to a snowglobe full of Capn' Crunch and we realize it was actually Walt Jr's dream all along.

You're welcome.

It was, like many other SA emoticon/avatar trends, a "you had to be there" moment. The hype for ME2 was incredible, and the game ended up living up to (almost) everyone's expectations, which was pretty fuckin' rad for what should have been a just a run-of-the-mill space shootymans game. Even if you count the dollars forked over to SA for smilies and avatars among the worst behavior that came of it, I think we're still ahead--Annakie's masseffectsaves.com is still up and used daily, lots of goons came together for the Mass Effect Secret Santas (MESSes), skoolmunkee drew tons of amazing art based on the series (that inspired at least one avatar purchase), and some chucklefuck even managed to host a half-assed creative writing contest based on the series.

edit: aww fai don't be that way

When that thread was happening, it was the raddest thread there was. I remember some people posting that they had registered just to read and participate in it, which is weird for just a normal games thread. That party train eventually derailed because it got a little too chatty in there and so there'd be like two thousand new posts without particular reason. Some people hate it when, for example, the Order of the Stick thread gets like 80 new posts without there being a new strip. You can imagine what that must be like when there's two thousand. :v:

It's a shame ME3 couldn't garner that much enthusiam. Well, enthusiasm for something other than its ending anyway.

YNDNIAD presumably was written so Zack Parsons could make some money, entertain some goony goony goons, and continue to sharpen his writing skills. The ability to write even better and monetize his writing then resulted in him writing Liminal States, which is loving fantastic.
