(Anime murder mystery games are a weak spot of mine, I guess.) Well it was explained that they were actually steel arrows that may or may not have been taped together in case 5. although I'm not sure how Junko made it look so fancy. I guess she created a mechanism to shoot the arrows up through the floor or it was also a stylistic choice

Raenir Salazar posted:Gotta say though, still really not sure what Komaeda's motive was the whole game, or what it was after he learned everyone was Despair? Before he learned everyone was SHSL Despair, his motive was to foster a great hope in the face of despair. However what he defines as "hope" is "who's hope wins in the end?" He supported Teruteru because his hope was to stop Komaeda from murdering Togami, leave the island and see his mother again and that's why he acted the way he did. Similarly he was vicious against Mikan because what she did wasn't in the name of hope, but to cause despair. She had no greater motivation or wish in her heart that caused her to kill two people and that's what he can't forgive. When he learns everyone is SHSL Despair, including himself, he realizes that the Future Foundation and the traitor must be working against despair and for hope. It's basically what the end of the trial lays out: he created a situation where the traitor would be blamed for his death on his luck and no one would figure it out. When everyone guesses wrong, the traitor goes free and the remaining SHSL Despair get killed and thus hope prevails. Overall he's basically the opposite of Junko. She finds enjoyment in despair and will give people hope just to see them fall into despair. Komaeda wants to give people hope to see them succeed, but for that to happen a great despair must come first so that there's something to overcome.

Well, technically, the Future Foundation did want to kill off the rest of the Despairs, and it was only Naegi and crew (and Chiaki and Monomi) who were trying to restore them.

lotus circle posted:Yes. He thought the Future Foundation wanted to wipe out SHSL Despair, which is what Monobear had been saying since chapter 2, so that was his way of helping out what he sees as the symbol of hope. Huh, I had read his primary motive for that as wanting to make sure that the traitor (who he thought was the one genuine symbol of hope in the group) would survive, rather than as wanting to kill off all of SHSL Despair. That definitely sounds in line with the explanation he gave of his motives in Another Episode, though.

Komaeda will probably be alright considering he survived up to now so far despite his illness and lack of sanity. His main goal was the creation of hope and it would've gone against his principles to allow Despair back into irl even if they were redeemed.

The weird thing about his character is how he seems be the only honest person Hajime can trust on the island. Everyone is almost always lying during the trial for his or her own reasons but Nagito tells 100% of the truth but at a slant. We honestly don't know if he's joking or not about himself during Free Time events.

The manga indicates that he's probably being at least mostly truthful there. Keep in mind the kind of cancer. It effects the brain, right? Raenir Salazar posted:If I was to come up with one 'criticism' even among the remaining survivors towards the end, only Hinata and Chiaki got any development. A small exception is learning Gundamn's 8th Grade Syndrome isn't all talk and he has some principles underneath the verbosity he earnestly believes in as well as with Nidai; basically I feel you get a good sense of them as people but they don't really develop or have arcs as characters. How'd Chiaki get any character development? Regardless, I think the idea is that all of the survivors got at least a little character development because instead of ditching all the comatose people to go do whatever, they stick around in hopes of helping them recover.

Chiaki starts off as this sorta stereotype of a sleepy gamer who doesn't do all that much and lacks some common sense (Foreshadowing!) who turns into our main pointman during the trials and the rock Hajime depends on for support and becomes gradually the most proactive member of the cast besides Hajime or Komaeda. I'd argue that's development. Remember her goal was just to observe but by the end she's doing much more.

If anyone cares, DR Unlimited Battle is now available on the Japanese iOS App Store. I played through the tutorial. This isn't just a ripoff of Monster Strike, it's as direct a skin-deep clone as it can be. Everything about it is exactly the same, down to the look of the reward screen. The only innovation is the brief 3D transitions (which are pretty bad). It's also a very lazy clone - no polish whatsoever, and downright ugly at times. There's no story at all, nor any justification to why you're using DR characters as pinball warriors, so don't expect some fun on that front either.

Aw, that's disappointing to know - I was hoping that bashing DR characters against each other for no logical reason might at least be fun. Guess I can just ignore it and be better off, then. On one hand its interesting to know that DR has reached the 'pointless knock-off sidegame' level of popularity, on the other its weird that its characters from the first game only at this point. I wonder if they'll make of those boring, aggravating mobile social games next.

I've started watching the english dub on youtube for DR2 as I generally get some extra enjoyment from a good localization. I'm not necessarily some purist who thinks there's no reason to watch a dub though I generally prefer the original Japanese acting in most cases and okay with the dub version usually; and DR2's choices seem generally pretty decent but: Holy poo poo. Am I the only one or am I right that Komaeda's english actor is entirely inappropriate? There's something keenly unreal about how he speaks and sounds almost entirely unlike how the character looks, at the very least Komaedo looks somewhat sickly, his dub sounds like a very healthy individual. Hajime is spot on though.

I think its because his voice I feel is a tad too deep sounding and more appropriate for an older or more athletic seeming character.quote:Someone has never played Fire Emblem Awakening to understand why Bryce Papenbrook was a loving fantastic fit for Komaeda. Goddamnit, stop making me buy systems for just one* game! *I got the Vita for Persona 4 and DR2, I'm not really sure what else to get now to justify the system beyond for game development reasons. My rule of thumb is I should spend roughly twice the amount of the cost of the system on games.

Well Papenbrook is starting to grow on me, I think I just needed time to adjust to how different his voice is. Watching Another, usually I'm impressed by the writing in this series but I guess at some point you can't subvert expectations forever, the tragedy you're forced to watch sorta unfold at points is just saddening if you're at all sympathethic to the characters. Another spoilers for up to chapter 2ish: Particularly I'm both sad at the obvious plot of poor communication possibly resulting in Asahina's brother dying (and who knows what else from Komaru not knowing Naegi is still alive) and that Touko herself is absolutely devastated at having to eventually face Asahina about it later.

It's cool that there's a bunch of untranslated Japanese text in the official English release of SDR2. It's really great that, during the Chapter 2 trial, whenever the game flashes back to Twilight Syndrome Murder Mystery, it just shows a screenshot of the Japanese version of the game, full of Japanese text. That's wonderful. Thanks

I picked DR2 up again. I'm on chapter 3. Why the gently caress doesn't Hajime think anything of finding Sonia locked in Hiyoko's room? I mean, this is the series where ONE PERSON thought to look at bloodied numbers upside down, but finding someone in the room of someone who just died with the door locked behind them isn't the least bit suspicious?
