Battler, the literal stupidest man on earth. Why are you even here, Battler, why did you come back to this place so you could fuck literally everything up?

BlazeEmblem posted:

It does seem stupid, but in DR2, Makoto said in the final trial that 'their real bodies had just been brainwashed'. At the time, most of us missed the line, or thought that it meant that they were just manipulated by Junko and could snap out of it. DR3 went with fantasy brainwashing with a video, whereas we assumed that it was actual brainwashing, which could be broken out of.

Yeah, and the thing is, this plot point could still have been really interesting... had it been handled well, which it wasn't really. The question of, "What do you do if you were brainwashed to kill the world and were only brought out of it after you'd done it" is a meaty one, and worthy of consideration, and had the anime dealt with that question at all, it would have been miles better. But what we got was the DR2 cast looking and acting for the most part exactly the same as they did when in high school, and it's just like... what? These people ended the world, don't tell me that doesn't leave scars! We were told in DR2 that they were scarred and unrecognizable and did terrible things, and you don't portray that by just acting a bit sad. Don't tell me there wasn't at least one or two people on suicide watch; don't tell me there are not some visible feelings of horror and shame at people who killed their family and friends. I'd remind everyone that when Nagito found out what they had done in DR2, his very next action was to kill himself and get everybody else killed too- that's how goddamned awful their actions had been as Ultimate Despair. And how are they supposed to react to Naegi giving them a second chance- he saved their lives, yes, but they also have to deal with the weight of their actions; are you sure there would be no feelings of resentment, no anger that he didn't just let them die, no hopelessness at the enormity of the tasks before them- just wholehearted gratitude? Where was any of that in the anime, whist we were busy cramming all the fanservice and ground we could?

There should have been a struggle, because isn't the principal question of the series "What do you do in the face of Despair"? Answering the question of having to come to terms with your crimes- and the meaning of being given a second chance by Makoto- seems great for exploring that.
But, alas.

It takes place on a remote southern island, during a Hope's Peak Academy "school excursion". The basic scenario is the same - the students are trapped on the island and only a murderer can escape. The protagonist lost his memory from before arriving on the island, and doesn't even know what his SHSL ability is. There are indeed survivor/s at the end of the first game, and the trailers imply some of them are also in this one, but nothing is made conclusive. One of them is such a blatant "clue" that most commentary I've read about it on Japanese boards agree it has to be some kind of misdirection.

Dangan2 spoilers.

This is from the like, 5th post in the thread, but I think it's hilarious that the "big clue" ended up just being "huh. i guess we never realized that his name could be rearranged like that"

The only part of the game that was any good was the scenes between Toko and Komaru, but they're not good enough to make up for the rest of the poo poo.

Well I beat Chapter 1 of DRV3 so i can talk about it. Goes without saying do not highlight unless you already know or simply don't care about spoilers:

I cannot tell if Kaede Akamatsu actually being the first killer/decoy protagonist is the dumbest twist I've seen in these games or actually the best one. It's something I think everybody considered including me, but then right around the time I realized
they were actually cashing in on it I felt...I dunno. Extremely stupid and forced? I'm coming more around to it as a plot device as I start Chapter 2 proper, and I think Shuichi has the potential to be an even more interesting protagonist than she could have been but, I dunno, something about the whole thing still feels slimy. I cannot deny they did make me feel pretty broken up about that class trial, heck, successfully reducing me to a crying fit from the emotional weight. Mystery of the case was okay enough but felt kind of short compared to the second game's first chapter. Gosh another thing I remember is people talking about how tame DR executions became after Leon but wowsers Kaede has one of the most gruesome executions I've ever seen. I expect the game to get better and better as the Chapters go on because I have honestly no idea what to expect next, but I sure as can't wait to find out. Actually that's just how DR games tend to go isn't it?

Chapter 1 spoilers

I'll have to watch videos of the localization to see exactly how they translated certain lines, but replaying the 1st chapter in Japanese was really nice: the twist is well clued way in advance, and yet almost impossible to get early on a first playthrough.

Played the Prologue. Man this is a pretty game. All the visual presentation is so slick and the music is good too. I probably won't come posting or looking in here until I'm done so I can just fully stay away from accidentally spoiling myself. I do have one theory that I'll put in spoilers and see I was right/if there were any reactions to it after I finish the game.

Theory: These kids are actually normal high school students and have been injected with Ultimate talents and false memories. No one's an Ultimate. The pre-Prologue and that very fast cutaway showing Kaede wearing some sort of device on her head is what got m thinking about this.

Chapter 1 spoilers continue:

It definitely feels the same way in English even if I don't have the Japanese version to compare. The clues are all right in your face that Kaede is the killer but you're just gonna gloss over them and think Shuichi did it. It is actually probably brilliant.

I was on the fence, and read the chapter 1 spoiler since its just chapter one, and that's convinced me to get the game. Thanks! :v: I just hope things aren't TOO gruesome, the anime was really difficult to watch towards the end. The first and second games were both fine, though, and UDG is all a hazy blur.

I'll probably get it for Vita though, since it's cheaper.

Chapter 1 spoilers continue:

It's a really nice implementation of an unreliable narrator. The narration never lies to the reader, and there aren't even that many places it completely hides crucial information. It's just that everything related to the murder plan - actions and thoughts - are described vaguely or in ways that can be interpreted differently on a first read. Whatever you think about the protagonist switch, it's a very clever piece of mystery writing.

I think the big thing that will separate people on if they like the game or not is if they think (chapter 1 spoiler) Shuichi is a more interesting protagonist than Kaede or not. As I (think) I mentioned earlier, the biggest thing that dragged the game down for me is I just did not like him as a character and I think he basically developed in the most predictable and boring way out of the main cast. It's a letdown, considering how the start of the game was such a swerve. At the very least I think they should have held off on doing it for a bit longer.

One of the mid game executions is a bit gratuitous, but even that is nowhere NEAR as uncomfortably fetishistic about drawn out torture as the DR3 anime was.

Chapter 2 spoilers

After getting to control him for a bit now I definitely understand people who think Shuichi is a boring protagonist. He's not terrible by any means in my eyes, but I do have a pretty good guess as to how he'll develop from now on and those aspects of him seem relatively basic. I thought the thing they seemed to be going with, with Kaede being a hopey friendshipy optimistic protag but it backfiring on the other kids usually only causing people to dislike her more than anything was an interesting dynamic for a main character in this series to have to have and then...poof she went. I'm finding myself wishing they had done the opposite of what ended up happening and having the protagonist switch from Shu to Kaede but maybe stuff later would make this not make sense? I don't know. Shu isn't ruining the game or the fun for me or anything but it all just feels like the torch passing could've been done better. Still a cool twist.

I'm still really early so my musings are probably pointless, but hey.

The ending of Chapter 1 was really the last thing they could do to surprise me in a Dangan Ronpa game, and it loving worked, but I was just getting into a female MC and now I'm a little disappointed for it to be another dude in the vein of Makoto and Hajime. Hell of a way to open the game, though. I was completely convinced the shot put ball had rolled off of the top of the opening hidden door.

Man, that chapter 1 ending. I was convinced for the longest time that Shuichi did it, basically for the same motive that Kaede did: getting rid of the mastermind. So when the game made me pick myself as the most likely suspect it was actually pretty effective. I'm sad I don't get to play as Kaede more though, she was cool. So I guess this continues the Danganronpa tradition of the first kill having an unintended victim and the killer being someone very close to the protagonist. Which honestly was part of why I thought it was Shuichi in the first place.

And holy poo poo, this is the craziest cast of kids yet, I feel. Rantaro was giving me serious Nagito vibes until, well. Except all the "crazy unstable" genes seem to have gone to that kid with the scarf. And I have a feeling Gonta is too pure for this world to survive all the way to the end. But hey, the game might end up throwing that one for a loop, too.

Is it just me or did they really crank up the adult language this time around? From Miu in particular, but the others too. Not that I mind, but it feels like the previous game were surprisingly PG-13 for being games about highschoolers murdering the poo poo out of each other.

Dumb question, possibly:

Do I need to play Ultra Despair girls or watch DR3 to enjoy V3? I started playing it and then I was told I should stop and do both. The anime looks cool and I started it morning, but I remember UDS being a loving slog (I really hate the gameplay) and I really don't want to go through it.

On discussing the actual game, the uhh platforming segment. Wow. I reloaded my save a few times but I don't think I'm going to complete it, and I doubt the game is going to force me.

I am curious about something after Chapter 1, though

Chapter 1 spoilers:

Does every character have 1-2 Free Time events written for Kaede and then a full 5 different events for Shuichi? I immediately worked on Tenko with Kaede because strong lesbian girl is my favorite character in this game, and she obviously reacts very differently to Kaede as opposed to Shu in the events due to her hatred of men. It could just be that only this character has different Free Time events, but the two protagonists are different enough that I'm going to assume they both just have different sets of Free Times. I am mostly curious as to how many FreeTime events they wrote for Kaede?

Kaede has 2 free time events with each character and they are all different from Shuichi's who has the regular 5 events per character, with Kaede you have to keep repeating chapter 1 to see all of her events but with Shuichi you have the bonus mode after the game to complete all the ones you missed with him
