Hi I just beat Chapter 1 and this game is going to have to beef it really hard in later chapters to not be my favorite game in the series, the trial gameplay rules to hell and the cast is great and also I get to play the rest of the game as my cool best pal Shuichi gently caress yeah. Good game all.

Out of curiosity, what do you like about him? He's so... Boring.

Towards the end of the game, I can't remember which chapter exactly (it was the last or second last) without going into specifics he does develop slightly, but at roughly the same time the game goes and makes Kaede even more interesting as a character and it kind of ends up back where we started.

Just one more thing!
Chapter 1 spoilers At the "who did it?" selection I ended up picking two wrong choices at first, not because I didn't know what the game was trying to do, but because I couldn't believe it was actually doing it. I very much like the twist and am pleased with it, though I do feel down about the fact that we had a female protagonist and now we don't. I'm curious about the whole ultimate hunt thread that was left. Makes me wonder if whoever is doing this wants revenge on ultimates as a whole. Initially I thought it was Shuichi who might know what that means and killed the victim to silence him, but once it became clear it was Kaede, everything snapped into place and made sense.

Quick question, if you're talking with someone and you rotate the right stick, an small submenu for "reaction voice" comes up which lets you scroll around for different positive/negative reactions - is there any point to this? It doesn't seem to affect the tone of the conversation at all from what I can tell.

I just made it past the prologue (playing on PSTV) and absolutely loving it so far. The presentation is gorgeous - and I'm really enjoying the characters and environment this time around. The voices sound really low - there's a patch to fix this, I just don't have enough space on my memory card to download it. Minor gripe, it's really not that bad if you turn the volume on the voices up. I've been spoiled on chapter one twist already but I'm excited for the ride!

It simulates "filler reaction" sounds that are prevalent in Japanese conversation (it's considered impolite to the speaker if you don't interject with one every so often when listening). I don't believe it actually does anything in the game. If it does, it's a well hidden easter egg.

Chapter 1: I was on the fence about the twist until I saw "I dropped everything I was carrying" in the flashback. Then I laughed for like a full minute and realized it was brilliant. I was tricked into thinking it was Shuichi for most of the case, but I was confused about how he could transport the shotput and how he'd actually make it fall (I was imagining he somehow used the drone).

I really loved the case overall, it worked pretty well emotionally and I like the hints at a wider narrative. The motive was well-done and the fact that Kaede was the protagonist allowed us to have a "good culprit" without questions about why they did nothing to stop everyone else getting executed in the trial. That said I liked Kaede a lot and I'm sortof disappointed we're back to a pushover girlvoice protagonist again.

There were actually a few things I found kindof suspicious about Kaede at the time. Obviously the whole vent/books thing was strange, and also the way she reacted to the murder put a lot of emphasis on how Rantaro had to be the mastermind. The one thing that doesn't make much sense to me is that Kaede couldn't have known the music would come on when she was setting up her books, but maybe she just hoped the mastermind would ignore the noise.

If they wanted to recycle voice actors, they probably shouldn't have picked the guy who does one voice for every character he plays.

Unless it turns out Kokichi is actually Kuzuryu in disguise.

The entire point of the hat was to hide his DR protagonist antenna hair.

Also, this isn't very relevant to the dub, but I had a moment when I realized why Shuichi was voiced by Megumi Hayashibara, who is almost never cast as male characters, for no good reason. It's because it's a rule that DR protagonists are voiced by very famous veteran voice actresses (and there's no one who fits that more than Hayashibara).

Well I just finished it so let me give this a shot.

1) The games controls are really bad and there is a lot of filler combat that just straight up isn't fun.
2) The new villains are all just terrible. They're children which apparently translated to having the VOs do very bad child voice affectations, really annoying speech patterns, and having the kids repeat themselves all the time.
3) There is some hardcore mood whiplash. Especially with what the game considers a proper joke to have with a character whose defining background trait is "was raped".
4) The ending was even more contrived and stupid than normal for this series.

The gameplay is pretty boring, most of the characters are stupid, and the biggest issue (around here, at least) is how it's a bit... Questionable towards some of the female characters.

Chapter 1 spoilers Haha oh man... nicely done game. I hadn't ruled out the possibility of the MC being the killer but didn't expect it right out the gate. Also in my head I imagined that the player would get more of an insight into the murder and prep but the narration covered it up well while still leaving a few hints along the way. I fell into the "it must be Shuichi" trap as well because I couldn't stop thinking about the camera that had it's flash left on. In the end I picked Miu at the trial first cos I like shuichi too much and then it clicked. Awesome chapter

One lovely thing about the trial: the new minigame with the split opinion. On keyboard+mouse you have to mash one of the wasd keys except that, for me anyway, the A and S keys were swapped. So I failed that part multiple times before I figured out I had to mash S when it said A on screen. Is this the same for anyone else? Can I change the controls somewhere?

Thoughts after beating Ch.1(spoilers)Given how much the thread talked about spoilers for Chapter 1, I kind of saw the twist coming. Still, I wasn't able to figure out that Kaede was the culprit up until you had to name the killer. While I am disappointed that the writers backed out of having a female protagonist, given how they just couldn't resist sexualizing her ever chance they got it may have been for the best.

I'm surprised how many spelling errors there are in the game. I know the previous games had their share of mistakes, but never to the point where they appeared in the very first cinematic of the game.

Character-wise: I'm warming up to Miu, but I have a feeling a lot of that is due to the localization doing a decent job having her toe the line between entertaining and insufferable. Tenko on the other hand might be the least likeable character in the series, which is saying a lot.

Oxygen Deficiency

Chapter 1 I went to bed after getting to the trial so I spent the night thinking of who the culprit might be and the murder method. I was so fixated on the murder location being the A/V room with someone (not Gonta, too obvious) throwing the shotput through the crack and the throwaway line about the screen as a pole was too specific to be passed up. Then it ends up being completely useless info and I was mad. Though the rube Goldberg line is way more obvious to me now.

I will say he wrote her well in that regard, she is definitely the most vulgar and obnoxious character I have ever seen in any video game, but at the same time she can be pretty endearing with it. I guess that makes her the ultimate love it or hate it character?

I've only watched till the end of Chapter 1 but I don't mind Miu. I wouldn't say I like her but I think she's a better written bully/rear end in a top hat character than, say, Hiyoko in DR2. This is mainly because the cast doesn't just roll over to her insults and actually snaps back at her. She doesn't get to throw around snide remarks with impunity.

The only character I don't like so far is Tenko. "Hates men" really isn't a great trait to define your character, especially not when you bring it up every other sentence for no reason.
