DR V3 Chapter 2 spoilers: Just got to Ryoma's body discovery scene. At the beginning of this game I picked 6 characters I thought would live until the end. 3 of them were Kaede, Rantaro and Ryoma. How am I striking out so perfectly? Kaito, Miu and Kirumi, please hang in there.

I wouldn't say I like her but I think she's a better written bully/rear end in a top hat character than, say, Hiyoko in DR2. This is mainly because the cast doesn't just roll over to her insults and actually snaps back at her. She doesn't get to throw around snide remarks with impunity.

I haven't read the last few pages, as I'm completely unspoiled for Danganronpa v3, and would like to stay that way, but I just finished the first chapter, and it was quite a roller coaster. Some thoughts in chronological order: Hmm, Shuichi's being a bit annoying tagging along with us all the time, but that Rantaro guy seems pretty on the ball, let's do some freetime with him. Uh-oh, he only has two freetime events and both involve him talking about Shuichi. Meta-logic suggests clearly at least one of them is not gonna survive this chapter... Oh dear, and now Rantaro's tripping up all the flags by swearing to stop the killing game. Ah crap, I knew it! But I found him a really interesting character... ![]() I like how assertive Kaede is though, what with her inspirational speeches right off the bat. Just a bit too concerned about trying to build Shuichi up! Kaede, he's not the protagonist - you don't have to go out of your way to make sure he gets over his issues. Anyway, it was probably Gonta or the little guy punting the ball from the A/V room, but I'm kinda hoping Shuichi somehow did it, 'cause obviously we're not gonna have an Ultimate Detective with us the entire game, and it would be an interesting twist for Kaede to overcome while remaining hopeful if he's the culprit. Hmm, guess it's not Shuichi after all, so I'll have to put up with him still! Oh well, at least I'll always have Kaede being cool. Oh.. I have the worst luck with the characters I like and find interesting in these games. Complexity and gameplay-wise it's definitely way above the tutorial trials in previous games, but as much as I can appreciate the bait-and-switch technically, I was really enjoying playing a confident, proactive girl for once, and am not looking forward to having yet another bland guy who needs to develop his confidence as a protagonist, so really hope he and the rest of the cast pick up the slack and become more interesting/likable soon.

My LE finally showed up! Time to post all of my thoughts while unboxing, to be a humorous as possible: 1. Man this is a large postage box. I still don't know why Edmonton is YEG - The Y is for Canada, the E is for Edmonton, so I guess the G is for Egmonton? 2. Okay, opened the box, and here is the bag that everything is in... are those backpack straps on the back? I don't think that anyone who can fit those straps is old enough to play this game. 3. Now I've opened the bag, and we have the LE box, headphones which look too small for my large ears, and a hat that is too small for my head. Let's see... "one size fits most"? I'm an exception! Because I have a gigantic head. Oh, is this the detective's hat? That's cool. 4. "For portable device?" That would be awkward if it wasn't! 5. The LE box is good. It's a lot stronger than the other LE boxes for the games. I say as I gaze at the LEs for DR1, 2, Another Episode, and the DR1 Anime LE box. 6. Okay, inside the LE box. We've got the game, the CD (yay, no spoilers in the track list), Another CD is a proper CD case (not opening that until after the game, that is probably the spoiler tracks), and an artbook. Okay, enough stalling. It's time to play this... After my Vita is done charging. Why is this taking so long .

Ch1 End Spoilers: I thought I had it figured out until it basically got spelled out, and even then I was pretty sure it was one of those gambits where you get unfairly blamed. My theory? Obviously a suicide. That's why he didn't raise his hand as the blackened. By killing himself he could short circuit the rules of the game and end it right away.

Okay so I beat Danganronpa V3. Yeah, don't highlight anything in black here, I'm spoiling the entire game: Okay uhh...I'm not really sure how I'm supposed to process how the back half of the sixth trial went. Was that the funniest poo poo I've ever seen in a game? the craziest poo poo? the dumbest poo poo? Maybe it's all three of these things at once. Now I can understand why this game is so divisive and I can feel at least some of my strong positive feelings of the game definitely dropping from all of that ridiculousness. Did they just not know how they wanted to finish the game? Are the staff actually sick of making these games? Perhaps everything flew over my head because I just finished it running on a lack of sleep, but I'm finding it difficult to find anything except the reveal of what really happened in Chapter 1 to actually be clever. It actually kind of leaves a strange feeling in me, wondering if I wasted my time playing the game at all. Is that what the game's ending wanted me to feel? I don't know. Maybe I'll have a more concrete set of opinions on it after I've slept. At the very least, uh, at least 90% of the game was good? Just to reiterate, those are ending spoilers for Danganronpa V3.

That "say something outrageous, oops I lied haha" schtick gets old really fast. He just comes off as the most annoying little poo poo. But that's how he's supposed to be? Suspicious Dish posted:Out of curiosity, how did you know this? As mentioned, if you try visit Rantaro as Kaede for the third time, you can spend time and give him a gift, but no actual free time event triggers. As for one of Shuichi/Rantaro not going to survive the chapter, it's very rare for free time events to namedrop other characters, much less so specifically (i.e. "you and Shuichi are very close, blah blah"), so it was a strong hint that something's up. Then of course there was other meta-y stuff like Rantaro obviously knowing more than he let on and making his own plans to stop the killing game (look what happened when 'Byakuya' tried that in DR2), the fact that it would be a first to kill '???' character before their talent's revealed in these games, and Rantaro/Shuichi/Kaede being the three most proactive characters investigation-wise, and that led to me thinking at least one of them has to go, if not two, as usually the 'investigation team' doesn't fully gel until later chapters (Hajime and Chiaki in DR2, Togami joining Naegi and Kirigiri in DR1). So, basically, I didn't know Rantaro's a goner, but I strongly suspected it due to a combination of how these games usually work plus thinking about what tricks hadn't been used in them yet.

Sea Sponge Run posted:Okay so I beat Danganronpa V3. Yeah, don't highlight anything in black here, I'm spoiling the entire game: Vague V3 ending spoilers: Whew, oh boy. You can see why the Japanese fan backlash was so negative now, huh? People were not thrilled about what they felt was the dev team insulting them for being passionate about the games. I definitely came off of it feeling pretty down on the game, but kinda had to laugh at how audacious it was. It was sort-of foreshadowed, with how everyone was so ridiculous (like there'd been 53 iterations of characters that needed to be kept fresh) and nobody's talents really came up like they did previously, at least? I also felt salty-er about Kaede getting offed so early after the end's reveal. I really hope they decide to let the franchise die instead of churning out some more games for it (though considering the ending's sequel hooks...), since Kodaka has stated he's done with it. I know that franchises don't always need the original creator to be a part of them to have good entries, but considering everything he hasn't written (to my knowledge) has either been extremely contentious (DR3) or universally panned (the books) I wouldn't keep my hopes up.

V3 Chapter 1 spoilers: In the previous games, the vote was always just implied that of course you voted for the correct culprit, but in this game you have to actually make the vote input yourself. There's a 30 second timer. I am just guessing, but I think it would be interesting if there ended up being a trial that ended in an even split where Shuichi has to put in the deciding vote. There might not be anything to it, but it feels like there could be some meaning to that actually being a gameplay mechanic this time.

Whee, just finished V3. Spoilers for the whole game incoming: I actually liked most of the characters this time around, or at least felt something for them, which is more than I can say for SDR2. Even Kokichi had some good moments - I knew there was something up with his talent, plus I kept not being sure whether I loved him or hated him - the moment you find him outside the seance room made me laugh out loud, and then the entirety of Miu and "Kaito"'s trial happened and I despised him more than any other character, and then the twist...didn't redeem him, but at least made him more interesting. He really did feel like Komaeda 2.0 with a bit of Togami sprinkled in for good measure, though. I enjoyed the murder tricks throughout - I think someone upthread said they were made by an actual murder mystery writer? Some were better than others - I really liked Ch5's, but towards the end it felt like a rehash of 2-5, and while I liked the emotional impact of 4, the actual trick was dumb. I'm gonna pretend Ch6 didn't happen. In fact, I think I'm gonna say that while the actual murder-solving sequences are my favourite in the whole series, the meta-plot was the worst. Even worse than SDR2. SDR2 was at least entertaining, but I found myself fast-forwarding through this one because it just...sucked. I totally called Tsumugi being a villain though, even if it took all goddamn game, and her talent use was pretty clever. My favourite character was Monodam

I woke up and had more time to think about the ending of V3. [Danganronpa V3 ending spoilers!] Ultimately I suppose I am okay with the Danganronpa the Reality Show plot twist since I forgot it's entirely possible the mastermind is bullshitting about a lot of even all of what they said. It gives interesting implications as to what the "true" outside world actually is as well. I'm not sure if a potential fourth game should just completely ignore this ending or not, because I think would be pretty impossible to continue from this point and arrange everything in a way that isn't going to piss off fans of this series in one way or another even more than I'm sure this ending did. I'm still not really sure why they didn't just reboot the setting like they said they were going to but hey, I trust the writer to know what he's doing with his work more than I do. It helps to know that the writers don't personally hate me I guess since that was a part of the ending I got confused on. One of the problems I feel remains after those reveals is that it's hard for me to even know if I truly liked any of the characters because their personalities and actions are all part of a script and we only got to see, briefly, what a few characters (Real!Kaede, Real!Shu, and Real!Kaito) were like before they became "Danganronpa characters". I suppose it gets to be the domain of the fanfic authors or something but the three people shown sure don't inspire any confidence that I would actually like any of their true selves. I don't know. I can't stop thinking about the ending for better or worse, it certainly gets you to think about the series-wide ramifications. I assume V3 is probably going to be the last title in the main series for quite a bit? Maybe it's time to explore a different genre for the universe. [/Danganronpa V3 ending spoilers!] Looking forward to how Danganronpa evolves from here.
