(Ending spoilers) I guess I technically placed Tsumugi in the upper half of the crew? So I'm not going to defend her exactly, because everyone is completely right that she does gently caress all for most of the game, forms no relationships with anyone and is exactly as plain and bland as she appears. The thing is, it became pretty evident to me at some point that she was either the mastermind or otherwise in cahoots with Monokuma simply because she did so little for the rest of the game. Plus, the cospox thing in chapter 1 was a giant glaring Chekov's Gun that failed to materialize so the fact that she was going to cosplay a fictional character at some point was expected, too. So I was constantly anticipating the big villain reveal for a good part of the game, and when that finally arrived it was pretty great. Her cosplay roulette was exactly as ridiculous as I had wanted the villain's schtick to be, and right up to the point where the ending went full meta, I was enjoying it. Maybe on reconsideration I'd rank her below Himiko and Maki, though. It's true those characters got more development than she ever did.

Ending: I'm surprised to see those VR interpretations, it contradicts what we see in the game. Team Danganronpa kidnap people and brainwash them into living animes before making them play the killing game, using audition videos as justification that may or may not have been also obtained by brainwashing (I suspect there's a mix of willing and unwilling participants). Shuichi is right, the deaths are entirely real and the game is messed up as hell even if you assume the audition videos are genuine. The advanced tech is there because the game is set at an unspecified point in the future.

(link to whole game spoilers) This tumblr post suggests the translation exaggerated some of his nastiness while minimizing some of his good parts. Even taken with the usual 'translations can never be 100% literal but some fans will harp on that anyway' grain of salt, it seems like there's something to that. Wow. I'd really recommend people read this, because the differences it points out are massive and re-contextualise things a lot. To the point that, even as someone who loved him just the way they presented him the whole time even with all the funny meme/edgelord stuff, I feel a bit cheated by these omissions. Things make way more sense with this stuff in mind.

As far as I can tell without going back to check in the game, one of the lines they spend a couple of paragraphs on was actually translated correctly and this post got it wrong. Most of the rest of the points may not be exact translations, but I also dont think they fail to convey the original meaning as much as they think. Theres about one or two lines in this post I agree NISA sort of messed up, but theyre not the ones the post spends most time on.

Reveilled posted:Whole game: No, I'm pretty certain it's a reality TV show, not a video game. The players of the game are real people who have had their memories replaced, and even though their characters are fictional the actors/players are physically present on the school set, getting murdered for real. They make multiple references to it being a media series, and if you have a look at the 52 case files in Shuichi's lab, the first few files have the murders depicted with drawings, while later files have the murders depicted with actual photographs. That's representing that while earlier editions of Danganronpa were video games and animes, later seasons of Danganronpa were live action reality TV shows. I don't think there's any indication in the game that the players just wake up and go on their way if they die, and to me it would kind of cheapen the depravity of the outside world if they all know that the players don't die. i really don't think so. The splash screens at the beginning of the game are supposed to be taken literally, that downloading the software is illegal and all characters are fictitious. No other game in the series has those and it was totally intentional. And in order to end the game you have to deny saving and continuing. And in the epilogue as the camera pans out the "outside world" is just the Team Danganronpa logo surrounding their fictional space. The whole theme of the game is that lies are just another way to the truth and absolutely nothing Tsumugi says can be taken at face value. Shuichi says so much at the end musing that maybe the events of Danganronpa are true or at least real within their fictional world.

HellCopter posted:What abut the part where they constantly refer to it as "the show" and that people are "watching" instead of playing? I mean, people watch people play video games, and its often called a show. I know it isn't our world, but Danganronpa V3 is still in a video game. Chapter 4 was foreshadowing this, in addition to all of the other stuff mentioned by al-azad.

HellCopter posted:What abut the part where they constantly refer to it as "the show" and that people are "watching" instead of playing? Counterpoint: I can't take anything Tsumugi says as truth and Shuichi muses at the end if she was just copying someone else. There are more inferences to it being a game that the player actively participates in. The real world at the end is them staring at the player through a hole surrounded by Team Danganronpa symbols. Winning the game doesn't involves, you the player, literally stop playing. Don't save the game, don't select continue, don't fight the arguments, don't vote. And in the end it wraps back around telling you upfront that you're playing a game and everyone is fictional, something no other title in the series has done. What happens if you don't vote or vote for the wrong culprit during a trial? It's the first time its cropped up in the series and I never intentionally chose wrong but I did notice in one trial the wrong person was voted on by someone else.

NISA are not great but their fuckups in Danganronpa tend to be pretty tonal rather than content related. See, Blackened, the "schizo" Hangman Gambit in 1, the titles of the games generally, and the Kokichi stuff from the Tumblr post that isn't apparently just outright incorrect.

'How can having to play a game of life-or-death be fun?' maybe? ![]() Tired Moritz posted:im not gonna listen to possible faulty tumblr translations. since it makes no sense that he would be so anti-murder and still cause gonta to murder and die. I think that one makes sense. Either (ch4) Miu is taken out and Gonta is collateral damage but everyone else lives (what he saw as a best-case scenario), Miu kills him successfully, and dupes everyone because she holds all the cards re: VR and could manipulate the knowledge of it with impunity, so everyone else dies (worst-case), or Miu is diverted from killing at that particular point in some fashion, but is now a liability who can't be trusted and will definitely try again. To him, it's too risky to make the assumption that she won't, because like he said to Kaede, as soon as you decide that killing is acceptable, you're already good with the decision to sacrifice everyone else for the sake of it. It's pretty bad, but it's realistic, and in that light it would make sense that he seemed genuinely upset right before Gonta dies, and went so overboard on the 'evil' act afterwards. If it's part of your plan, you have to make sure everyone believes it. The Sezza fucked around with this message at 14:01 on Oct 19, 2017 |

Full-game spoilers:al-azad posted:The real world at the end is them staring at the player through a hole surrounded by Team Danganronpa symbols. To be fair, it's mentioned at one point that the dome isn't transparent and the sky projected onto it isn't real; that's not necessarily true (as it's an explanation for why they can't see the ruined world outside, and that's not necessarily an issue depending on the exact size and location of the 'ruined world' set), but I think it's not unlikely (if the participants see a bird flying overhead, the apocalypse reveal is ruined!). So it's possible that the outside of the dome is just covered in Team Danganronpa symbols, which would make sense if it's the set for the latest series of Danganronpa. There's probably room for multiple interpretations, so I'm not planning to argue you out of yours, but I don't think it's unreasonable to accept the interpretation we're outright given in the game: it's a reality TV show and the participants are flesh and blood people who are really killing each other, even if their memories are fake.

Knowing the twist, it makes me feel like Team Danganronpa had a different plan for the story and they had to hastily rewrite after Kokichi derailed their plans.

That seems to fit better if the point is getting people to realise that futuristic gladiatorial games need to end.

Knowing the twist, it makes me feel like Team Danganronpa had a different plan for the story and they had to hastily rewrite after Kokichi derailed their plans. I was thinking the same thing. It explains so much about how there were so many inconsistencies with their memories and the Hope's Peak document - their previous memories were setting up something unrelated to Hope's Peak, so adding it in created the inconsistencies. And here is my ranking of characters: 1. Kokichi - Nagito remains as my favorite DR character, so a character based around the same idea would score pretty high 2. Kaito - I love how he interacts with everyone, and how it is his actions which help develop Shuichi and Maki's characters 3. Tenko - I started off annoyed with her, but she developed into a likable character 4. Shuichi - Had the most development of any of the main characters. 5. Keebo - Interesting character. Jumped up in the rankings after the 5th trial, were he started blowing up everything to try to end the game. 6. Gonta - Likable, to the point where I felt he had the most tragic death in this game. 7. Kaede - Same as above, but got killed too early to put her above Gonta 8. Maki - Not a favorite, but I liked her, so she gets this spot 9. Himiko - She had some character development, but not enough to place her higher than right in the middle 10. Miu - I didn't like her, but she was entertaining 11. Kirumi - Her killing Ryoma completely changed her personality. 12. Tsumugi - Boring for most of the game, but her cosplay in the final trial was awesome 13. Kiyo - Only this high because of how interesting his talent was 14. Rantaro - Didn't live long enough to know him very well, but at least he was important in the final trial 15. Angie - I actively hated her. 16. Ryoma - All I can remember about him is that he died.

We are complicit in the killing game by playing it. And they drive this point home by declaring Danganronpa to be a multi-media franchise (which it is) with a huge fan base that enjoys the battles between hope and despair and the suffering of its characters. I wouldn't be surprised if the audience's comments were taken from NicoNico videos or something. Shuichi's plea isn't about the fictional audience realizing gladiatorial games need to end, it's us the players acknowledging the series needs to end. It's why I hope they never make another one of these because it's the perfect end to a piece of interactive media: stop playing! Frankly when Tsumugi reveals the audience I thought the game was going to pull a Tearaway and turn on my Vita camera. And obviously I have no way of proving it but I wouldn't be surprised if the game wasn't also on PS4 they would've pulled something like that. I definitely want to track down every interview with Kodaka now. Even more so now that I learned he's friends with Zero Time Dilemma's writer, a series I need to finish as well.

Okay fine I'll do a ranking. Not Quite Komaeda Tier: Kokichi - Oh man. This guy. I'm not even particularly sure I even like the guy all told but he is absolutely the best character in this game. Also, 50% of the stuff I liked about a lot of other characters was the direct result of Kokichi pressing their buttons. You Fuckin' Rule Tier: Miu - I did not at all expect Miu to endear herself to me to the extent that she did. I thought she seemed pointlessly vulgar but somehow, somehow, she ended up being very entertaining and I was sad to see her go. I think they struck a decent balance between her massively overinflating her own intelligence and her actually helping out, even if she did more of that through inventing stuff than thinking. You Were Cool Tier: Ryoma - Despite being hosed over by NISA and not being a vocal expy of Snake, Ryoma was cool and probably the victim I was the overall saddest to discover. Kirumi - Besides the bonus points for both looking and sounding like 2B, I guess I was just a big fan of her no-nonsense style and her ludicrous determination. K1-B0 - Somehow, the fact that he's just, like, a guy, for most of the game, despite being a strong-AI robot, plus mundane functions and constant indignation (and being needled by Kokichi) made Keebo massively endearing to me. I don't even particularly care about his Ch6 antics. Kaede - I was a fan of the completely different flavour of protagonist I thought we were going to get before she got magnificently framed for an extremely implausible murder scheme. I was beginning to wonder how many piano pieces she was going to remember. Okay Tier: Rentaro - He seemed cool. Gonta - His speech schtick was irritating and it didn't need to be in the game at all. Beyond that he's broadly sympathetic but really boring. Kaito - Ehhhhhhh. Kaito borders on self-parody and he says a lot of stupid poo poo. It's possible to be relentlessly, inspiringly positive without being a moron. This wasn't it. Maki - What is there even to say about Maki, really? They just kinda wasted the assassin reveal on her, and all we got out of it was a single crossbow to plausibly tie to Kaito. All she contributes is some snark and a bit of reasoning. And I guess the odd death stare. Shuichi - I got nothing. Single Redeeming Feature Tier: Tsumugi - I guess it's nice that in retrospect Tsumugi was intentionally written to be incredibly boring but that's hardly much solace. Her redeeming feature is, of course, her 32-way cosplay show, though that is in turn sullied by some really poo poo voice work. Himiko - Himiko annoyed the poo poo out of me. She is intensely, aggressively boring. She is a single joke stretched out for fifty hours of runtime. I've made this sick burn before but she is literally about as interesting as a mid-game Fire Emblem recruit except without the range of astonishingly varied romance/friendship options. The single redeeming feature of her as a character is the little bit of growth she gets in the middle of the game. It's not nearly enough, and she goes right back to maaaaagiiiiiiic straight after that. Angie - I guess they tried to have a weirdly forward oddball character and it just kinda struck out. She was pretty annoying overall. I was a fan of the emerging subplot with her slowly indoctrinating everyone, and that alone probably would've put her a tier higher up this list if that subplot wasn't abruptly thrown in the garbage and immediately forgotten about. Garbage Tier: Tenko - Maybe Tenko might've gotten a lot more likable if she hadn't been killed mid arc but here we are. Her single notable trait wasn't really very interesting and was botched even harder by translation. Korekiyo Tier: Korekiyo.

I actually thought all of the characters in this game were really good and well written, with a couple of exceptions. There were characters I hated but I think they're the ones you were supposed to hate. Ranking and more detailed thoughts: 1. Kokichi Probably my new favourite character in the entire franchise. He ties really well into the games theme of truth and lies, is always hilarious, and once youre able to see through his veneer of lies and trolling it seems like hes genuinely trying to help everyone and end the killing game. That said I also really like how much about him is left up to interpretation. Really really sucks that he got Gonta killed though. 2. Rantaro Shout out to my boy for being the first person weve seen to try and end the game without killing anyone. I liked his thing of having some idea of what was going on, definitely the most mysterious ??? weve had. I dont think they would have been able to keep that mystery going so I dont mind him dying so early on though. 3. Himiko This games Kuzuryuu (though Kuzuryuu was still better). Her magic thing was pretty one-note but it was a note that didnt get stale, and her character arc through the game is probably the best development anyone gets. Maybe I just have a soft spot for magicians though. 4. Kaito The true Ultimate Bro. What a cool dude. Hes a great emotional and moral core of the group. Sure hes a dumbass, but its nice to have someone who contributes so much to class trials from an emotional perspective rather than a logical one. 5. Angie Angie is so high on this list, not because I like her, but because I detest her. Shes a completely horrible person who uses her religion as an excuse to get away with anything. Ive never felt outright relieved when a Danganronpa character died before, and I think its cool that they were willing to try and do something like that. 6. Shuichi Shuichi fits the mould of generic Danganronpa protagonist, its true, but I think hes a better character than either Hajime or Makoto. You really get to see him grow, learning to believe in himself and open up to other people, really coming into his own by the end of the game. 7. Kibo Kibo also fits the mould of generic Danganronpa protagonist, which is appropriate considering that hes the real protagonist of the show. Hes consistently a source of good advice, and hes really cool whenever hes not being controlled by the audience. 8. Miu Miu is the character I think I did the most complete turnaround on. I thought Id hate her going in, but her gimmick managed to be consistently funny without getting too fanservicey or too over the top. If you must have a pervert character, shes far better than someone like Teruteru or Hifumi. Her inventions were super useful, her interactions with Kokichi are hilarious, and she also managed to endear herself to me by being one of the ones who didnt buy into Angies cult. 9. Kaede Huh. You know, when I started making this list I thought Kaede would be near the top of it. It was cool to get a protagonist who was so wildly different from Hajime and Makoto, being all proactive and stuff. Looking back, though, was there really anything to her character other than gives motivational speeches and wants to end the killing game? Maybe Im just not remembering well because it was the earliest part of the game, but in retrospect I dont feel like she had a lot of depth. 10. Gonta Super nice, super nave. Gonta is my friend but hes not much of a character. 11. Ryoma Ryoma was really cool. I was really hoping hed last longer, shame we really didnt get to learn anything about him. 12. Maki I like Maki, because I like any girl who could kill me. That said, to me Maki feels like a mixture of Kirigiri and Mukuro who is somehow far less interesting than either of them. It is nice to have the main girl character not be the love interest of the protagonist, though. 13. Tenko We get it, you hate men and like girls. Tenko gets some points for standing up for Himiko in the second trial and trying to get her out of the cult in chapter 3, but boy could she use more character traits. 14. Tsumugi Tsumugi is basically an entirely different character as the mastermind and as a student. As the mastermind shes spectacular, her cosplay gimmick is exceptional and she does a good job of embodying the hyper-obsessed fan. As a student shesthere. She kind of has an only sane man thing going on early on, but then Maki takes over that role after chapter 2 and Tsumugi just kind of disappears off the face of the earth. Its a shame because it would have been great to have someone youve made a close friendship with across the game turn out to be the mastermind. The characters were acting like that was the case in the final trial but I didnt really feel it. 15. Kirumi I literally keep forgetting Kirumi exists. Cool mom though. 16. Korekiyo so the thing about Korekiyo is that he was actually one of my favourite characters right up to the ch3 murders. His thing of being an incredibly creepy dude with a creepy outfit who was actually one of the sanest and most logical characters was really great. Then the game just decides to throw all of that out the window to make him a serial killer who wants to bone his sister. Like, dude came across as smart enough to not commit a murder that so blatantly pointed to him as the suspect, at least.
