Kay Kessler posted:I don't really know pianos but I saw a post going around that the music she plays during her execution is supposed to be really easy to play (black keys only) as a final humiliation. That's true, the song is Der Flohwalzer (The Flea Waltz), also known as Neko Funjatta (I trod on a cat) in Japanese and one of the most typical 'literally anyone can play on a piano' songs. ('Chopsticks' is as example probably more well-known in the english-speaking world though.) I thought it added an extra layer of nasty to an already brutal execution myself.

I don't really understand the English Monokuma hate because he sounds exactly the same as his previous outings to me. I'm not saying people are wrong or anything but I don't hear it at all.

Amppelix posted:Does anyone agree with me on chapter 2 being the worst one in the game by far? Nothing interesting really happens in the entire thing. Shuichi spends time being the worst he ever is in the game, moping around, which doesn't help endear him to you coming off the chapter 1 twist. The whole motive videos business only amounts to the bug meet-n-greet with Gonta and Kokichi (which is great). The trial is also the worst one in the game, with painfully slow meandering towards the murder method, which you probably figured out mostly during the investigation, and no interesting twists to save it. I can intensely relate to any character that has some form of anxiety, so I found myself growing attached to Shuichi and relating to his fears throughout most of chapter 2. It also helps that Kaito is the Ultimate Bro and offers to help him out through training, and the difference it makes is pretty astounding. I actually kinda liked the trial too, even if it's pretty easy to figure out

Following the end of the RPG mode, you are told you have unlocked some more content and given a prompt that says clear save data. I figured I did not want to clear my save data like I had for School Mode and chose no. Now I have to beat that boss again. Fire NISA.

He has a laid-back attitude about it, doesn't read dialogue out loud (I know some people like that but I don't think you would), and is just bad enough at figuring out the mysteries that it's entertaining but not excruciating. Also his viewerbase is small enough to not be terrible. Been enjoying this. Any more like this guy? I looked into that other guy mentioned (who calls himself Trump for some reason) but I'm not a fan so far. Sadly, he and usedpizza are about the only streamers I've found who don't read dialogue.

Yeah Trumps being streaming so long that starcraft was still popular when he started (hence trumpsc). Unfortunate for him that donald trump became relevant again.

I didn't realise the whole english vs japanese VO was a thing until I started reading this thread. I first experienced DR through oren's lp's with the japanese VO. When I picked up DR2 myself, I played it in japanese without thinking too much about it. And it was the same for DRV3. It wasn't a case of "THE ENGLISH VOICES ARE TERRIBLE" I just preferred it that way. I did go back and replay DR2 with english voices and I thought they were fine. I'll probably replay DRV3 in english at some point too but for the most part the japanese voice cast was really drat good. The only weak VA was probably Shuichis imo.

Yeah, I'm only using Japanese voices because I got used to them in the series thus far so it's a little jarring to hear the English voices instead. I'll probably replay the series in English when I'm done with v3.

I dont really get it, because it's only at the beginning of V3. Jake pointed this out in his stream of it and was also confused by it. It is my personal opinion that his English voice should have gone in a more Bugs Bunny direction but that's just me.

A bit of Googling finds someone saying you unlock it by... having 100,000 casino coins at one time, which I can tell you is untrue, because I've never had that many coins at once and I've unlocked it. I've definitely earned over 100,000 coins in total, though, in order to support the unhealthy love hotel habit the protagonist developed in my playthrough, so that might be it.

Rankings v2.0: 1. Kokichi 2. Kaede 3. Miu 4. Kaito 5. Maki (↑ 2) 6. Gonta (↓1) 7. Shuichi (↑3) 8. Himiko (↑1) 9. Ryoma (↓3) 10. Keebo (↓2) 11. Tenko (↑1) 12. Angie (↓1) 13. Kirumi 14. Rantaro (↑1) 15. Kirekiyo (↓1) 16. Tsumugi A few insights about how the rankings have changed: People seem a bit more accepting of Shuichi and Maki, placing both of Kaito's sidekicks higher than was initially apparent. Ryoma and Keebo, on the other hand, suffered strongly. In the end, these changes were fairly minor; there's a pretty clear consensus of who belongs on the top and the bottom, with Kokichi gaining an even bigger lead on Kaede than before and Tsumugi still rounding out the bottom. Angie remains the most controversial by far, but opinions about Tenko and Gonta turned out to be significantly more polarized than we first thought. Also, the scores have settled into some larger breaks, which produced the following natural "tiers" in popularity: Kokichi Tier: Kokichi Popular Tier: Kaede Miu Kaito Maki Gonta Shuichi Himiko Ryoma Keebo Controversial Tier: Tenko Angie Unpopular Tier: Kirumi Rantaro Kirekiyo Tsumugi

I'm still surprised Kaede is so much more popular than Shuichi. Looking back, Kaede was really one-note, and her free time events didn't really strike a chord with me either. She didn't exactly fall flat, but she wasn't fantastic either. I get that people were excited for a female protag, but drat.

She didn't exactly fall flat, but she wasn't fantastic either. First of all congrats on that chain of puns. Character spoilers: All the characters are kind of one note for the first chapter because they haven't had time to develop, so I don't hold that against Kaede so much as I'd evaluate her first note versus the other characters' first notes. I'd also assume that a large part of Kaede's popularity comes not just from what we saw of her but also from the potential she had as a character. I'd have been much more interested to see how a character who is already motivated and self-confident develops versus "dude is insecure about his own self-worth until eventually he isn't any more", which is the same arc of the previous two protagonists. Kaede's role basically ends up getting filled by Kaito, she just gets a bump over him from actually having been the protagonist for one chapter. So it's partly female protagonist but also assertive protagonist too, I think.

While kaede was one-note, it was a note that I enjoyed more than "Whiny emo bitch number 53", and they didnt really flesh her out because they were setting her up to be the first murderer. Shuichi really aggravates me because he's just such a wimp about everything except investigating and only really starts being not-a-bitch at the tail end of the game. At least try to put up an argument instead of getting pooichi to do it for you I actually think that was Kaito being helpful. Shuichi felt guilty for his first detective case, then for Kaede, and for that matter Kitumi. Kaito was talking about taking the credit but in a sense he was taking the blame and the responsibility. Basically it would normally be a jerk move but it was something Shuichi kind of needed.

I might be alone in this but I'm not super fond of how convoluted the later cases get in DR2/3. Things like the weird Strawberry/Grape house mechanic, or the VR world in DRV3 feels a bit like 'well we gotta make it a different mystery somehow'. All the DR1 cases were fairly realistic-ish; Chp 5 was a bit convoluted but it's a pretty weak chapter anyway. I dunno, just things like 'sticking a katana into an effigy and make it spin to create a locked-room mystery' teeters between 'good mystery' and 'well that's just a thing that can only happen in a video game huh'.

It'll never stop amusing me that almost every case in every Danganronpa would be basically unsolvable if the culprit had just ambushed someone, knifed them, and just left the knife in the body and made a token effort to not get blood on their clothes. Only Sayaka Maizono even attempted this astonishingly sensible gambit, and only really stepped wrong by contriving it happening in Naegi's room - how did she think that would end? Naegi had her key and she his. But anyway, Leon turned it around on her, but he hosed up by trying to clean up the scene and by not loving noticing his own loving name being on the wall. Imagine if he hadn't done that; it went down in Naegi's room, he's holding one of Sayaka's possessions, and only his own word says otherwise. Mondo came close too, and was undercut by Togami being an enormous scheming poo poo, and even then was only finally undone by his own slip-up. Without those, that case goes nowhere. As if to underline this point, the very next case gives us the incredibly convoluted and immediately transparent Justice Robo gambit, and, well it was all downhill from there.
