Hajime must be especially hurt, considering Chiaki was the only one who stayed dead after his game finished.

Yeah, already spoiled myself at the beginning of the first game when I tried to look up what presents Toko likes. Probably the worst character I could have googled for the early game.|

I counter that googling Junko Enoshima would have been far worse.

I saw a plot summary for the third game, "Danganronpa 3" on google so when I was playing the third game I kept wondering when Makoto would show up. I kept expecting him until the very end of the game.

So apparently there was an unused sprite of Miu that they ultimately didn't add to the game because of ethical reasons.

I actually like Tenko and find the reason funny.

She is very earnest and not super smart and as a result pretty much took everything her Master said as gospel. One of the things she says he master told her is that men are all degenerates and perverts who would take advantage of her. She wholeheartedly believed him and hated men from then on. Which then leads to a funny scene were Shuuichi points out her master is a guy and she has a crisis of faith.

For those who've played the PC version, since I just got that version:

So I'm attempting to record the game, and getting hit with the audio desync with cutscenes when I'm actually recording. When I don't run the game runs fine (well, stuttery controls aside). It's not a huge deal since I could grab the cutscenes from YouTube, but I haven't tested to see if it'll be a big problem for trials. Is there notable desync there? Because if so it might mean I'll be limited to screenshots, which would be an issue.

Junko: Seriously, it's scary how determined the researchers were to mess with the human brain *that* much. Doing such inhumane acts that nobody else is capable of with such a calm mind and a steady hand... I admire it sooooooo much it makes my mind numb!

I'm 95% sure that the lobotomy scene in DR3 wasn't made with this line in mind at all, so I guess Junko is retroactively referencing it, as a complete accident on the writers' part.

This has been a thing for over a decade. I had an ex girlfriend that was obsessed with movie trailers recreated using Kingdom hearts cutscenes. Like the dialog and sound effects copied from the trailer, set over kingdom hearts cutscenes cut in a way to follow the trailer.

Just finished v3 and went back to thinking about chapter 1 (full game spoilers) after chapter 6 updates it. I really enjoyed the idea of chapter 6 going back and showing that the first chapter twist was actually even worse than you thought it was when it happened.

But the whole time a part of me wished the twist was reversed, with the chapter 1 protagonist being shuichi, making him the culprit, and then switching into a non-detective character that has to learn to be one instead. Maybe too similar to dr1 but it already seemed to be channeling that anyway.

Anyway, I enjoyed the game a lot. CAN'T WAIT TO BUY THE NEXT ONE.

I think a lot of people wanted that, and I'm sure they thought about it. The decision was probably made in the end by some "i think our target demographic will swallow it better this way" logic.

Getting to play as the UD was really cool I thought. I mean it wasnt actually any different but I liked the concept.

v3's ending is so good. I think what bothered the writer of the series is that in DR1 and DR2 doing exactly what the mastermind wants is too much fun. This was the problem with Kokichi's dumbass suicide plan - it still ends up being good television so it's no threat at all.

Shuichi beats the MM much more thoroughly in v3 which is why the story ends up working so much better than 2 even if individually none of the characters are as well realized as Nagito and even if nothing that happens from chapters 2 to 5 matters.

Class trials are a really fun mechanic though. I'd love to see them used in a totally different sort of game because v3 was such a good ending to the series.

Procrastinator

I feel like the eventual ending being really good media is the lead in for dr4.

The base trial mechanic are fairly fun (gently caress the running/taxi games and hangman's gambit though tbh). I was a bit surprised that v3 dropped the "absorb a statement to use on another statement" part, but maybe just because I didn't like the new mechanic. The concept of back routes is neat though.

I'm not entirely sure what other sort of game you can make out of it; a consistent cast of characters seems like a big point of it to me, so I don't think a more open cast mystery series like ace attorney could just pick them up.

This mechanic was only used like two times in DR2 too. The presence of statements you can agree with kind of obviates its need, and for the better if you ask me. It's a bit clunky.

I'm just selfish because there's so much potential left in the idea. For example, V3 teased a triple murder and I feel like there's surely space to go there. They also bring up the rule of equal votes for a culprit + someone else without using it either. It certainly seems like they have plenty of ideas for more, and frankly 'spitting in the face' of it strikes me more as a creative opportunity.

But also maybe TDR is bored of making them. The game concept as a whole can continue to exist, even if the explicit trappings of Danganronpa leave, in my opinion. I don't think its specific quirkiness is the only way to do these games and have them be satisfying, or induce the mind fuckiness level.

I'll bet they got rid of that mechanic because it ended up being too difficult the majority of the time in dev. You're going from 10 different choices to 100, and that's when the player knows to use it.

Lie bullets I barely used but visually and sound-wise it was so beautifully done.

If they make another class trial based game I hope that the words hope, despair, Makoto Naegi, and Junko Enoshima appear zero times, that whole thing seems well put to rest.

No it was terrible TV, that was why it worked. People voted to end the series not because it was cathartic but because they were bored and the ratings drop immediately. The entire planet lost interest, simultaneously deciding that this is stupid.

I think the way to make another game that makes the most sense would be a prequel to V3. You can interpret Tsumugi's "copycat" line as saying that the entire fictional Dangan Ronpa series was ultimately inspired by a "real life" case, and adapt that. That would let you have a similar setup with a very different tone, dropping the sci-fi and hope/despair stuff for a setting that could kindof maybe sortof happen with more realistic characters. It would also respect V3's ending since they wouldn't be making a sequel and it would be materially different.
