Chicken pox? Really bad HFM? Sometimes kids get real real weird rashes.

Our youngest had red spots on various parts of her body and face that we briefly thought were HFM or chicken pox. Turns out it was caused by her body's immune response to a fairly benign viral infection. Humans are weird

Our son had a weird rash across his lower back that we thought might be celiac kicking in, since the coincidence rate with T1D is like 15% or something terrifying. Checked with his doctor who didn't seem super concerned and was fine with waiting for the blood test with his upcoming T1D appointment. Came back totally negative. Consensus was that it was probably a dermatological immune response to a cold/virus, it cleared up before too long.

Just some harmless nightmare fuel, no biggie. :(

So yeah, sometimes kids get real weird rashes.

I thought the same happened to me a year or so ago, even did a chest xray which showed no fracture. Turns out I had a chest infection and it was very unpleasant; I'd suggest you go see a doctor.

useful thread title imo. our 10 month old started with a rash on her cheeks. then her face and shoulders, then it spread everywhere. doctor said it was fine, and it just slowly faded as it headed to her feet and then disappeared after a week

mostly she seemed fine, but it was really weird

My 10mo old has been fairly rash free but has a ferocious diaper rash right now.

Grandma gave him whipped cream and either the dairy or the sugar got him.

Or we took him in the pool and the chafing/chemicals got him.

Or his teething is causing bad diarrhea.

Or he got a bug from daycare or the restaurant we took him to or the 1000 times a day he drops his pacifier on the ground or tries to eat dirt.

I have real bad body mechanics from always favoring my left side while holding my babies and this led to me pulling my intercostal muscles, which felt a whole lot like a rib fracture. I can always kinda feel the whole muscle group just waiting to be tweaked on bad or stressful days.

I started exercising / weightlifting more after my back/everything started hurting when lugging the wee one around. This helped a lot with the chronic pain. At the same time, some days are just so busy so throwing a kettleball around is easiest for me for 20-30 minutes. I also have the toddler acting as my plank buddy and push-up buddy and she gets really excited, so that's my fall back if the work and kid schedule is too much. I figure 5 minutes is better than nothing. She's also a bit of a mimic right now so she's also enjoying showing me how little flexibility I have at my age.

It didn’t seem fun for her at all! We’re glad she got through it.

We made it a full 48, and almost 24 hours post-discharge, before our first panicked call to the hospital so they could explain basic baby mechanics to us! I’m on the phone with the nurse, explaining that our baby is two days old, breast feeding every 2-3 hours, milk hasn’t come in yet but he is definitely getting colostrum, and he hasn’t peed or pooped in 12 hours.

Nurse says, “okay, have you tried just taking his diaper fully off for a few minutes?”

I say, “no, we haven’t. Hang on, i’ll do that now… Okay, diaper is off, i’m going to get my wife a towel since she’s holding a baby who is theoretically supposed to be peeing, and oh now he’s peeing all over the bed, i guess that’s problem solved.”

I’m glad my little dude isnt having a problem and if he’s gotta pee on the bedspread for us to learn that, i’m happy to put it in the wash.

My 4 year old discovered the deadbolt on the front door this morning, we had a chat about never going out it without a grownup.

This evening my wife left to run an errand and I was focused on something I was working on for a few minutes and realized I didn't hear them anymore.

Spent 5 minutes frantically searching the house and backyard yelling their name, just spiraled all the way to they're out the front door and I've lost my kid.

Go to sit on the bed to call my wife and end up sitting on them, curled up in a tiny ball at the foot of the bed apparently asleep deep under the blanket.

I am very bad at hide and seek.

It's crazy to me how our near three year old can get moved around so much in her sleep now without waking her. We used to spend hours getting her to sleep on ourselves only to mess up the transfer to bed and be back at square one. Now she goes to sleep in her bed and we move her when we go down because she decided to sleep in some bizarre position in bed.

My almost 7 month old boy pees when I put lotion on his belly/waist. I can see it coming every time, the face he makes is adorable.

I’m ready for it with a an extra cloth diaper and at this point it’s almost bed time ritual before I put his night diaper on.

They have an in built timer for how long it takes to not inhale to elicit panic from the attendant parent. Only .0001 seconds after you start to freak do they take a big, deep breath only to repeat the cycle again.

Scary!

My daughter is past that age now, at 6, but she has certainly been a flight risk right around age 4-5. Thing is, I was never worried about it when I had her on her own, but as soon as she was with a particular friend from preschool, they would take the first opportunity to scram.

What are the parenting hacks for keeping toddlers entertained on flights? 2-3 year old edition. I'm planning on downloading episodes of favorite stuff for offline play using VLC (is this still the best), sticker books, snacks galore and little fidget toys/stickers/play-doh but any absolute must haves?

I think it's overkill but the last major flight was pretty bad

I have a question for the thread, what's a good instrument for a 4yo? My daughter is very musical and loves singing but she wants to learn an instrument. Ideally it's something cheap and won't make horrible offkey sounds as she's learning.

The VLC devs showed up at the modern E3 expo and had a vendor booth. They dressed as wizards to mock all the vendors there. Robert Evans(behind the bastards) told them he still uses VLC to pirate poo poo and they said “good, keep doing that”

I think a pile of books and toys are your best bet and hope they lock on to something.

It’s not cheap but I’ve been trying to play the Loog guitar with my 4 year old. To be honest I probably enjoy playing it more than he does.

It’s a little 3 string guitar so it’s much easier to play, but it does sound good. It comes with flash cards and a phone app to learn chords and scales and songs.

Other than that my 4 year old only likes percussion instruments so far. If anyone buys him a recorder I will cry.

if she doesn't already have a keyboard that's a good starting point and is cheap and won't make horrible offkey sounds. you can get these things from amazon, we got KG3 a little 25 key Jalokee rig that only makes piano noises.

I had this too, it's basically tennis elbow. I had it pretty constantly from when my kid was 6mo - 1 yr or so. Went away completely once she was weaned off bottles and stopped falling asleep in my lap every night (switched to walking her around).

Pretty much exactly what I did - downloaded stuff from Youtube and whatever and put them in VLC. It only worked so much for us, at some point she just got bored/fed up with video. (this was last Christmas, she was almost 2) We didn't do a lot of toys or anything. Plenty of snacks though.

Edit: Also yes, headphones for sure, and let them play with them/use them beforehand so they're used to them. We got a random toddler-friendly Bluetooth headset off Amazon and it was fine.

For maximum entertainment value, wrap each fidget toy, sticker packet or book up individually in gift wrapping paper. Give your kid one gift to unwrap at a time. When they tire of the first one because the novelty has worn out, give them another one.

I saw somebody in here recommend the Casio SA keyboards for kids, and I was going to buy one, but my father-in-law bought our toddler an Anpanman keyboard before I could.

It has multiple instruments, so you can go to bells or faux violin/strings along with piano. It also has a soundboard mode, which is something toddlers absolutely don’t need 🫠
