I can only imagine how much it makes his blood boil to hear people using The Wire to justify Trump's racism and just completely ignoring what the show was actually about. I'm sure he deals with that kind of sentiment on a regular basis anyway but this week is just dialed up to 11.

Re-watching with my gf (for me, anyway, her first time) and got up to season 5.

I know Simon wanted (and failed) to make the point that Gus was so wrapped up in his navel-gazing that he missed all the actual stories happening, but even taking that into account the scene where Gus totally owns Klebanow while they watch the press conference on television is just embarrassing wish-fulfillment bullshit.

I don't think I ever heard of The Bosch but goddamn that's a pretty loving strong cast it's got there.

Also if you'd asked me if Daniels and Marlo ever had a scene together in The Wire I'd have said,"Of course they did, don't be stupid!" but then I thought about it and realized they never did, Daniels just oversaw the start of the operation against him and was Commissioner when Marlo was arrested, but never had any scenes together with him. That's kind of nuts.

I love living in Baltimore and driving in to work each day to this chud rear end in a top hat Ed Norris spouting off his bullshit about how what Baltimore needs is more drug warrant sweeps and to flood the streets with state troopers. I wonder what Simon would have to say if he listened to this rear end in a top hat for a few days.

I find Gus kind of irritating tbh. He's a little too smugly cool for my tastes and he doesn't feel as obviously flawed as the rest of the Wire's characters. Probably doesn't help that Scott Templeton is equally one note.

Season 5 still has a lot of great stuff to it though. The weakest season of the Wire is better than most shows.

In December 2003, Norris was indicted on three charges by U.S. Attorney Thomas DiBiagio. Two of the counts charged Norris had made illegal personal expenditures of over $20,000 from the Baltimore Police Department's supplemental account in order to pay for expensive gifts, personal expenses, and extramarital affairs with at least six women.[3] The third count alleged that he had lied on a mortgage application, stating that approximately $9,000 he received from his father was a gift, when it was actually a loan.

Norris was investigated by the US Attorney of Maryland for abuse of a non-taxpayer funded expense account. While looking for violations, it was discovered that Norris borrowed $9,000 from his father for a home purchase. Norris and his father signed gift letters stating the money was a gift. It was discovered that Norris had returned the money to his father at a later date; at that point the gift became a loan. Norris was then indicted for making a false statement on a mortgage application.

In a plea agreement, the mortgage charge was dropped in exchange for a guilty plea of abusing the expense account, which Norris had denied. On March 8, 2004 Norris pleaded guilty to federal corruption and tax charges.[4] Norris was sentenced to six months in federal prison in Yazoo City, Mississippi and Atlanta, Georgia, to be followed by three years of supervised probation and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service. The case alleged lavish gifts and meals were given to friends and girlfriends.

Despite the guilty plea, Norris has publicly maintained his innocence claiming that the case was politically motivated and the guilty plea was forced because of his mortgage issue. In an October 9, 2006 newspaper article Norris admitted to using the money from the alleged accounts, but said that he paid it back in full before he left office to take the position of Maryland State Police Superintendent.[5]

Anybody know what they mean by "number one male?" In context it seems to mean a black guy. Is that because African Americans are the majority of the city? I'm curious about the origin of the term. Do other cities use it? I've never heard it outside the Wire.

Baltimore Sun has you covered

https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1994-11-09-1994313251-story.html

quote:

Official police jargon for a black man suspected of a crime is "number one male." I don't think we're called that because we're number one in the affections of police. I think we can also rule out that police subscribe to the Nation of Islam belief that the black man is the original man.

"Number one male" probably stems from the idea that a black male is considered by police the most likely description of a suspect in any crime. Or in the case of those of Susan Smith's ilk, we're the first ones they think of blaming whenever they commit a crime. Ms. Smith's story is similar to that of Boston's Charles Stuart, who murdered his pregnant wife in 1989, shot himself in the stomach and blamed a fictional black suspect. The irony is that in both cases, even the police eventually saw through both stories.

Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander: 0.05%

So I found this while trying to find out what the deal is;
https://forums.radioreference.com/threads/aaco-police-number-1-male-number-2-male.27674/

This has the same definition of the codes (1 = Black, 2 = White, etc) used in 2006. The 2000 Census for that county in question (Anne Arundel County, Maryland and bordering Baltimore City) shows a population of 81% White with all other neighbouring counties having similar White majorities other than Baltimore City itself. It makes no sense that they're base what appears to be a Sate wide code on Baltimore demographics.

This is a show where the racial tensions in the city is a major, reoccurring plot point.

Where significant decisions are made where the characters are acutely sensitive of these issues.

And you seriously think that the police force, which is 50% black, with a black commissioner, under a black mayor, decided to use a radio code for the black population of 'Black people R crims. LOL'?

Rather than assigning the first numeral in a numerical list to the most populous demographic of the city?

So you're just going to ignore that the code is clearly not specific to the city of Baltimore? You're just going to stick with the completely illogical notion that Baltimore PD developed its police code in pure isolation at the point after the black population became the local ethnic majority in the 70's? What did they do before that, because I'm sure this code goes back before then? Do you really think if, by some means, Hispanics suddenly became the majority ethnicity the police would update the code?

You even identify that a major theme of The Wire is racial tensions. Where do you think those tensions come from? It's probably not because a system targeted them based on fair and objective census data.

And the logic that a police force having black members, even a majority, can't therefore still be racist is rather mistaken. To quote Ice Cube on "gently caress tha Police"
"But don't let it be a black and a white one,
'Cause they'll slam ya down to the street top,
Black police showin' out for the white cop"

And yes, citing NWA lyrics in a discussion about institutionalised racism might be the whitest thing I'll ever do. Black Police is a whole debate within the community that draws into issues of class and so on.*

Former Baltimore mayor Tommy D'Alesandro died. He was in office during the riots in 1968. That former mayor who told Carcetti about the silver bowls of poo poo might have been based on him. Carcetti says something about how he got a raw deal because he was the mayor in 68, if I'm remembering correctly.

So this site, with a total of 58k hits going by it's myspace era hit counter, covers numerous counties of Maryland and shows a general similarity in how the codes are managed across the state with minor variation. 10-20 is consistently "Give Location" for example while less common orders are varied, though still have some consistencies, like 10-40 which is either "Use Landline" or "Go silent." At no point is there anything about describing suspects which makes sense because these are mostly dispatch codes and not the codes used in active pursuit of a suspect. As far as this is concerned race doesn't even exist which is oddly progressive for a site that looks like it was made 20 years ago.

The best this site shows for your argument is that there are some variance in Police codes but even then shows that important subjects are kept consistent. It says nothing about suspects so ultimately says nothing about anything in this discussion.
