Ain't got half a what you thought you had

Do the Dead have any super spacey mellow songs? I'm thinking something like this, which is tangential to the Dead, but I would like more and it seems like they would have been great at this style:

this might be an unpopular answer but there has never been a better band at improvised spacey mellow songs than phish

here's a mix of some of these jams from various shows, and the description lists the individual songs/shows they're pulled from if you want to explore those at all

Thanks - my exposure to Phish is very limited but I like this sort of ambient jamming.

Kinda spacey but a fair bit more jammy and ambiance works as they have no lyrics; Try Umbilical Moonrise, by Lotus.

It's so damn...literal.

I have tried harder to simply "get" phish than I ever have with any other band. I don't need to like them, I just want to understand the appeal because there are so many better bands in the jam scene. I had always just chalked it up to them being in the right place at the right time when Dead tour suddenly came to an end in 1995.

Then I heard this Antelope and it finally clicked

https://youtu.be/ETBSTYHmVUI

I heard a funny anecdote on a podcast recently. They were talking about all the heads that got locked up when phish played deer creek, and when they got to jail/prison, it was full of heads still doing time from the last time the Dead played there. They were like "wait, phish is the band now? How did that happen?"

E: I should clarify, they knew jerry had passed, they were just wondering how it ended up being phish and not like, allman bros or blues traveler

Not sure there is a huge amount of overlap between this thread I've been silently lurking in and the vinyl thread but here goes anyway. The Paris 5/3/72 show is getting a Record Store Day release.

I went deep into live Dead during 2020 thanks to work from home and this thread, but haven't heard this set yet. Is it solid?

Music is the best

I watched Long Strange Trip and it got me back into the Dead. Most of my knowledge ends after '77 so I had never heard Althea before and wow I was missing out. I was exploring the '72 shows (a big thank you to the poster who was doing deep dives into that year) and the Veneta,Oregon is amazing. I've been using headyversion.com a lot to find great versions of my favourite songs then listening to the full shows that they come from. But I'm sometimes finding it hard to listen to an entire show mostly because of how long they are and half the setlist being songs I'm not crazy for. I prefer their upbeat and engaging songs to the slow and meandering ones. Don't think this is me crapping on the band though, I'm still enjoying this long, strange trip!

Should look for the highlight albums? Is that what the Road Trips series is?

My Dead fandom sounds a lot like yours. What I basically ended up doing is if found a song I liked from an album or a set, I'd look at headyversion to see what people tended to think were good versions, check 'em out, and then whatever one I liked best I'd add to a playlist. Full set lists are still going to have songs you aren't into almost every time.

Basically for me I needed to weed out anything where Donna's vocals were high in the mix.

Road Trips are curated shows that aren't already Dick's/Dave's Picks that are released digitally by the band.

If you want a good "best of" that isn't whole sets, track down old recordings of David Gans' Grateful Dead Hour.

Scalper tickets for the pit in Mansfield are almost $900 before tax and service charge. Who a) has the money to pay that much for a ticket and b) would want to be in the pit for Dead & co?

In news that will surprise no one, the Dead & Co Ticketmaster presale was a clusterfuck this morning. Four of us all had verified fan presale codes, three of us were able to select tickets but then the CC payment with our saved cards was returning an error. Everyone tried paypal which let us log in to paypal and try to submit but then got kicked back at the last second. Trying to go back and start over got the message that our presale codes were already used. Luckily one out of four of us was able to successfully buy 4 pit tickets for Tampa but jesus this shouldn't be so difficult.

I wasn't too familiar with the early stuff until I started listening to the shows from 68/69. Seems like anytime they played the Fillmore it was guaranteed to be a great show. Now I'm going to get into 1989 after hearing the absolutely amazing version of Deal from 7/19/89.
What have all of you been listening to lately?

GOOD MORNING

Early to mid 80s, AFAIK, but he did it for quite a long time.

There's a great book "So Many Roads" which folks in this thread may be interested in. It captures interesting and significant moments in the band's history (Acid Tests, Europe, Pyramids, Touch of Grey taking off, etc), and speaks to where they were at that time.
