They'd be cooler if the weapon master wasn't forced to start with bronze weapons for the next 30 missions

Gimmicks like the weaponmaster that had 3 weapons don't really matter in practice. The weapon triangle made this matter a lot more in the GBA games at least. Paladins having weapon triangle control made them drat near invincible.

Weapon triangle has a pretty big kick in this one, if you look at the numbers. Up to five points of damage, in a game with this kind of HP distribution, matters quite a lot. Sadly, bronze and brass weapons suck enough you don't ever want to use them, even aside from slow weapon XP growth rates with no way to improve them.

SyntheticPolygon posted:On the other hand I kinda like how only some classes can reach S rank. Do you want a class that has a new weapon type or reaches S in a single weapon? I think that's a neat choice. There should probably be something on the promotion screen though that shows the max weapon rank of that class though. It would help if the game gave any indication of the weapon rank caps in advance though. Oh you thought it was the magic based troubadour class that could go up to s rank and didn't raise a butler? gently caress you, no resurrection staff for you. Maybe next time you'll psychically know which classes to raise if you want to use the cool super weapons at the end of the game.

tbh even felicia and jakob have a good chance of not reaching s rank in staves

I had S rank endgame once on my playthroughs, and that was only because I designated Felicia as my secondary healer. Gaining healing ranks in Fates seems a lot slower this time around. The only earlyish S ranks I get are the tanks or my shuriken users because they attack like 4-6 times a turn frequently.

Weapon ranks are a good way to differentiate characters. Prepromotes like Pent and Geitz for example, who have lower stats but start out with higher weapon ranks so they can use physics and killer bows right off the bat. Really the simplest option would just be to make weapon ranks go up fasterFoolyCharged posted:It would help if the game gave any indication of the weapon rank caps in advance though. To be fair, that only applies to a few classes. In most cases it's the class that just uses a single weapon type.

Well yeah, I'm not saying that Fates doesn't handle it poorly. I'm just saying that they shouldn't just throw out the concept of weapon ranks in general.

Differentiation is no longer an excuse now that Personal Skills is a thing. I just feel like weapon ranks are the next thing to greatly change or remove because it's an archaic device like level requirement gear. Which is still being done today for some stupid reason.

not every limiting mechanic is archaic and unnecessary. i think the current implementation isn't great but i don't think a free for all is the answer either

Yeah, weapon ranks still serve a purpose, but they should probably be rebalanced.

Characters already have different portraits so I see no reason why they should be different from each other in any other way.

It also doesn't help in Fates that the drawbacks to most B rank and above weapons tend to be enough to make you want to stick with steel and iron. Using a silver on an enemy phase of any real length basically fucks that unit over for the rest of the map.

reclassing is cool E rank weapons are not make promoted classes bottom out at D or something because by the time you promote you definitely dont want to fight through E rank
|
|
|

id say just have each promotion give you a different rank. like promoting from mercenary to bow knight gives you c bows, promoting from knight to great knight gives you d swords and axes, whatever. combine that with class differentiated max ranks.

Tbh I think the best way of handling weapon ranks is to make their progression use a combination of unit class, their current level and innate weapon proficiencies. So for instance a level 15 Arthur and Charlotte both have C rank axes, but Charlotte is nearly at B but Arthur has a higher sword rank than she would when he promotes to Hero.

So, interesting little fact. I was reading through the translation for the Fe6/7 character book![]() Mage General Elk? Now, naturally you assume that's just a mistranslated Erk but. Erk – Studious Mage Erk returned to Etruria and was asked to succeed the retiring Lord Pent. He refused and devoted his life to the study of magic. Now the book... I don't know if it was made before FE7 was out. If it was, it's strange it and Erk's endings contradict, if it wasn't is that the first reference to Erk in FE?

If he marries Priscilla he has the social standing to do so because of connections to Lord Pent so maybe that's the ending where he decides to accept the position.

So like after 21 Conquest does Lilith still show up in castle battles? I mean, I can still feed her ghost stuff so i'd assume so but that's pretty weird. Also, I'm sure her death was meant to be dramatic and sad or something but since like chapter 4 she hasn't had a line outside of "thanks for visiting". So it kinda fell flat.

Yes, and it makes more sense when you realize they cut a tonne they meant to do with Lilith. Spoiler for story DLC that never comes up in the main game. Lilith is Corrins real sister

I can appreciate S-rank weapons being locked to specific classes. The real annoying stuff is things like heroes being locked to B-rank axes even though they're a fighter promotion, not getting any weapon experience at a capped rank, and all promoted classes bottoming out at E-rank.SyntheticPolygon posted:So like after 21 Conquest does Lilith still show up in castle battles? I thought it was better in Conquest, myself. In Birthright, she's rested and aware, with all her allies around her and things have been going according to plan for the most part. In Conquest she's exhausted and alone and afraid and ambushed and doubtful.

I think that's in Conquest too. Something along those lines at least. It fits Corrin pretty well though. Anyway, that aside i'm like 5 chapters out of endgame on both paths and after all those things I heard about how terrible the story and everything is, it honestly doesn't feel that much worse than a standard fe story. Way more overdramatic but that's about it. Unless some really really dumb things happen in the last couple of chapters I feel like everyone was exaggerating a bit. Like, I imagine the end will have more Garon and he's easily the worst part of Conquest so that could get bad but so far story-wise the game was pretty ok.
