The whole point behind Oleg mentioning it to Arkady is that Directorate S didn't gently caress up and the plans weren't fake, the Soviet Navy tried adapting the props for a fast attack boat ("two sizes smaller") to a Typhoon as soon as they possibly could, rushing 5 months of testing into 3 weeks. Then they redlined the engines and the prop basically disintegrated.

The handler mentioned to Phillip that they'd planted fake plans all over the country though. Oleg brought up the sped-up deployment process to point out the Soviets didn't do their due diligence to ensure the plans were any good.

Then they redlined the engines and the prop basically disintegrated. I thought the plans for the propeller were for a sub 'two times bigger' than the Akula. To me it sounded like they put an Ohio-class propeller on an Akula fast-attack boat. The number of dead sailors doesn't match up for an Akula, but they don't match up for a Typhoon, either - and the Soviets wouldn't have put an experimental propeller on such a high value testbed. If anything (mil-nerd cap on), the 106 deaths figure matches up far better with a Victor I/II/III-class SSN. BIG HEADLINE fucked around with this message at 10:00 on Apr 18, 2014 |

Probably the best episode this season, at least since the premiere. It's amazing that I hated Oleg so much at first and now he's fantastic, and I genuinely don't know if he's "true to the cause ![]()

Oh yeah, I meant to share that thought too. Oleg loving owns and is probably my favorite character right now

To my untrained ears it sounds like all the Soviets are native Russian speakers. It must have been a pain to only cast actors that could do that, but it adds a lot to the show.

The girl that plays Nina is legit as hell. Shes from afganistan and speaks like 4-5 languages or something I have kind of a crush on her since one of my fetish is multi-lingual girls Also really hot ones ![]()

That's really cool and I was actually wondering just recently if they dubbed the Russian in or how they managed to have realistic and well delivered dialog. Of course, it's always bothered me a bit whenever characters who are supposed to be native speakers clearly wouldn't be able to order a BigMac, let alone discuss foreign policy or something. It's just hilarious in Red Heat, but really weird in a serious movie - is it that hard to find a starving Russian speaking actor or just dub it in later?

I think the implication is that Oleg's dad is involved in the KGB's more criminal side of things, though I may be remembering wrong. He certainly acts like the boss at the Residentura should be afraid of pissing him off, and is not afraid to gently caress around at work with no repercussions. I don't think it's all empty arrogance, and if he does end up wanting to defect that could be huge.

Oleg is from an "important family" so it's not necessarily just his father who's some bigshot, could be a grandfather, uncle, mother, etc. and it might not even be their job but just someone who has a close relationship with Brezhnev or Andropov
