Anyone with any balls got killed in 1991 and 2003 or said "gently caress you!" and joined the insurgents?

Someone got you a obnoxiously racist av.

Saddam's core security contingent IIRC was primarily Sunni and tied to him tribally, which helped greatly in terms of loyalty. He also dropped (relatively) shitloads of cash on them, and they were dedicated to maintaining his rule, not 'maintaining the peace', two very different notions with different associated methods. A whole lot of those dudes were killed in either the invasion itself, the Baathist purges of the early war, or the sectarian violence that followed, and most of that was a decade ago. Regardless, they'd almost certainly be not interested in or welcome in Maliki's sec forces.

Maliki didn't and couldn't build up the kinds of elite terror squads Hussein had, and basically just let his Shia goons get most of their benefits from messing with the local Sunni (including a lot of the groups we turned friendly in the surge/awakening, flipping them right back) with predictable results once they met credible resistance.

ISTANBUL — The Turkish government reacted with alarm on Wednesday to the seizure of the country’s consul general and his staff by militants in Mosul, Iraq, vowing to retaliate if any of its citizens are wounded.

“Our primary objective is to bring our nationals home in safety,” Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said in a statement from New York. “No one should try to test the limits of Turkey’s strength.”

Forty-nine Turkish citizens from the consulate — staff members and their families, including three children — were being held hostage in Mosul, the Foreign Ministry said in a written statement. Among them are diplomats, support workers and special forces soldiers. The consul general, Ozturk Yilmaz, is a former adviser to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and an expert on the region. The consulate was raided by members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, the radical group that has been making sweeping territorial gains in northern and western Iraq in recent days.

Another group of 31 Turks — truck drivers who were delivering fuel to a power plant in Mosul — was seized by ISIS militants on Tuesday, officials said.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called US President Barack Obama to discuss the situation in Mosul, Iraq, where the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized the Turkish Consulate General, but the White House forwarded his call to Vice President Joe Biden, Today's Zaman has learned.

ISIL has taken control of much of the city of Mosul, and given the serious security situation there, after Turkish Consul-General Öztürk Yılmaz, members of his family and others at the consulate were taken hostage by ISIL on Wednesday, Erdoğan called Obama, but Obama was apparently unavailable. Erdoğan was only able to speak to Vice President Joe Biden, according to an expert in Washington who follows Turkish-American relations closely. The Obama administration does not want to become involved in Iraq again, the expert told Today's Zaman, adding that the fact that the call was forwarded is the latest sign that Obama is no longer willing to give Erdoğan that privilege.

Don't answer my calls, will you? Well...

NATO ambassadors held an emergency meeting at Turkey's request on Wednesday on the situation in northern Iraq, where Islamist militants have seized swathes of territory and taken 80 Turkish citizens hostage.

"Turkey briefed the other allies on the situation in (the Iraqi city of) Mosul and the hostage-taking of Turkish citizens, including the consul general," a NATO official said.

He said the meeting was held for informational purposes and not under Article 4 of NATO's founding treaty, which permits a member of the 28-nation alliance to ask for consultations with other allies when it feels its security is threatened.

Ankara has twice invoked Article 4 in 2012 to ask for consultations with its NATO allies over the Syria conflict.

Technically Turkey could invoke Article V to insist on assistance to get its diplomats back.

First time I went to Mexico I was surprised to see so many white looking people. I learned there's a lot of them, they're of Spanish descent and they're largely responsible for running businesses and the politics and corruption ruining the country. Spaniards may be off brand white people but goddamn, they're world class subjugators and they left legacy of brown oppression through all of central and south America.

They're still total faggots though

Gates had a good bit in his memoirs about the incident where the Chinese just so happened to perform the first flight of the J-20 when he was visiting the country. He played it cool and during a meeting with Hu Jintao in front of a bunch of functionaries he asks something along the lines of "I've heard that your government has chosen my visit to perform the first flight of a new fighter aircraft. Since I will be asked about the significance of this upon my return to my country, what advice would you give me on how to respond to those questions?"

Cue a massive deer in the headlights look followed by several minutes of hushed conversation between Hu, his entourage, and the generals that were in the room. The response was something along the lines of "it was a pre-planned 'scientific' test that had nothing to do with your visit," but Gates makes it pretty clear that Hu and the civilians in the room had no idea the military was planning to perform the flight. While it's probably unreasonable to expect a head of state to necessarily be aware of the exact scheduling of a test flight of a fighter, the PLA is either too clueless to realize the diplomatic implications of such an action or is completely okay with pursuing a separate diplomatic policy than the rest of the Chinese government.

Either conclusion is worrisome.

I was over in Asia when the Chinese war plan against the US made the news and it talked about how we rely too much on technology and they'd use EMP to cripple us. I guess it was bigger in the news over there because I was trying to find more in the US news when I got back and I had trouble looking it up.

I thought that was more worrisome.

Not trolling and I assume you didn't bother reading it.
