Exactly, ISIS is making claims to all of this territory but they have zero infrastructure to secure it (similar to the Iraq invasion I guess). They can cut people's heads off but it's only a matter of time. People don't want to put up with sharia law and while yeah, they're gaining ground, they have no coherent means of securing it.

quote:

Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney, a former Alaska commander for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, said he does not remember a case of Russian strategic bombers coming that close to the U.S. coast.

“Again we see the Obama administration through their covert — but overt to Mr. Putin — unilateral disarmament, inviting adventurism by the Russians,” McInerney said in an email.

“At the height of the Cold War, I do not remember them getting this close. Mr. Putin had to approve this mission and he is just showing his personal contempt for President Obama right after meeting him in Normandy less than a week ago,” McInerney said.

McInerney said no American president has been treated with such disrespect in U.S. history.

“A sad day indeed and at the same time Mosul and Tikrit [Iraq] fall to radical Islamists after the Obama administration’s failed Iraq policy,” he added. “He snatched defeat from the jaws of victory yet again.”

Just a reminder of how this went down:

- The Surge had essentially eliminated Sunni sources of violence and the 'militants' remaining were generally Iranian proxies, if not straight up Iranian soldiers
- Obama made it clear he was going to pull troops down to a token with rules of engagement that were going to ensure they'd never do anything, and at least publicly kept saying they'd be leaving by the next election cycle anyway
- Maliki originally wanted several times more troops (IIRC it was like a 35-40k permanent garrison he was asking for) but that wasn't going to happen
- The Iranians are for some strange reason anti-American and anti-people who cooperate with Americans, and Maliki looked like America Cooperator #1
- Maliki's priority top ten list was ten different variants of 'Don't let my Iranian masters have me whacked'
- Maliki obviously couldn't go after Iranian proxies running around when they were technically supporting him, and the US administration refused to publicly admit they even existed, therefore
- The pittance of remaining American troops would've been wholly inadequate to indirectly ensure Maliki's personal safety
- The Iranians and the Shia really wanted to get back to the whole 'mass murder of Sunni' stuff that the Surge had irritatingly interrupted, and that was pretty much the only bone Maliki could throw

For Maliki he had the option of keeping a handful of American soldiers around, accomplishing nothing, but keeping Iraq in the American media eye where he couldn't allow sectarian mischief, all while pissing off the Iranians - or puffing his chest out a little and making a show of standing up against the imperialists. The guy seriously was looking at a lifespan measurable in months, if he was lucky. Obama (and Clinton) on the other hand desperately wanted an excuse to pull troops out with token cover against inevitable 'cut and run' accusations. The whole 'remove American soldiers' immunity' thing was a sham that served both sides - no one seriously thinks the Iraqi govt cares that much about justice for its common people. But it was a bluff on Maliki's part to try to get Obama to commit to a higher troop number with more active involvement in security, and we called him on it - which is why the Iraqis started bitching bloody murder about us leaving practically immediately, while we were like LA LA LA CAN'T HEAR YOU, GOT PLANES TO CATCH CIAO on the way out the door.

So ya, Maliki was a retard but ya gotta be careful blaming him entirely for us leaving. Although it's pointless and gauche to say things like "if McCain'd been elected he wouldna' have let Maliki throw us out" since McCain didn't make a campaign plank out of leaving Maliki hanging out to dry in the first place.

Did you even look at what you linked? The 'terrorist incidents' listed are suicide bombings, which are pale shadows of the open sectarian war pre-Surge, and which essentially bottom out in '09. Weak groups sending out suicide bombers aren't seizing police stations or whole towns; by Mideast standards of chaos that's about as peaceful as it gets. US media was having fun pointing out how more Americans were dying in a normal weekend of Chicago violence than in months in Iraq. Guys in this very forum were griping about how boring deployments were getting, how they didn't have any chance to 'get some' etc.

Periodiko posted:

I know this is pretty basic stuff, but it's really strange to me watching mainstream US coverage how they use "terrorist" to describe ISIL. They're very clearly engaging in open warfare for territory, and they have aspirations for creating a state: clearly it would be way more descriptive to call them rebels, militants, or an army. On top of that, there's this obsession with tying them to Al-Qaeda - every commercial break teaser has "meet the group that was considered Too Extreme for Even Al-Qaeda", "meet the guy who fancies himself the next bin Laden."

It seems like a really useful tactic to justify re-invasion of Iraq on the grounds of a renewed Global War on Terror. Like, the reactions that the American public has to "a seperatist force of anti-Shia rebels is establishing an independent, islamic state in Iraq" is very, very different to "the Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist group ISIL, led by a man who fancies himself the next bin Laden, are forming an enclave in Iraq." And cable news, as far as I've seen, has leaned far more heavily toward the latter interpretation than the former. The language being used has seemed to me to be specifically chosen to enflame American's fears about international terrorism.
