YAOUNDE, July 27 (Reuters) - Boko Haram militants attacked Kolofata, a town in Cameroon's Far North Region near Nigeria, on Sunday and seized several people including the wife of Cameroon's Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali, a military commander in the region said.

"The situation is very critical here now, and as I am talking to you the Boko Haram elements are still in Kolofata town in a clash with our soldiers," said Colonel Felix Nji Formekong, the second commander of Cameroon's third inter-army military region (RMIA3) based in the regional headquarters Maroua.

"Some of them have already taken away the wife of Vice Prime Minister Ahmadou Ali and her house help while the bodyguards of the Vice Prime Minister have succeeded in taking him out of the town to Mora," Formekong said, adding that there could be more casualties.

Shut the gently caress up and go back to D&D.

Rag head terrorists dying to the Jews' half assed effort will always be fun to watch. And if you think for more than two seconds that they aren't half assing it to try and be marginally humanitarian about curb stomping Hamas you are joking yourself.

If the Israelis wanted to, they would erase any and all evidence of Hamas and its ilk off the face of the earth. Right now they are still worried about international opinion. And doing everything they need to to keep the UN from whining like the pearl clutching faggots they are. They could, and should turn Gaza into Dresden circa 1945. The fact that they haven't shows they are exercising restraint in dealing with a hostile force attacking their country.

I'm confused here, because for a military that's trying to be humanitarian they're doing a pretty lovely job of killing terrorists and a pretty great job of killing civilians. And in the process they've lost 46 of their own soldiers while having no concrete goal and no strategy for a smooth exit. At the same time, lol @ Hamas for rejecting the cease fire, violating the humanitarian truce, and then complaining about being lit up by the Israelis again.

This is a silly quibble, but the 'civilian massacre' numbers come from the Gaza Health Ministry (i.e. Hamas) and aren't what you would call meticulously tallied. The deaths are overwhelmingly fighting-age men, rather completely out of proportion with the Gazan population.

A cynical person could wonder if these are, in fact, un-uniformed combatants (i.e. Hamas) fighting the Israelis. There's a lot of other BS with the numbers (apparently natural deaths just stop happening when the Jews are in town, etc.) As one person put it, "relying on Hamas for casualty figures is like relying on old East German economic reports showing it to be wealthier than West Germany."

Besides, way more people died in Syria last week (some reports say in just the weekend) than in this entire campaign, and it gets at most a mere footnote. No one gives a poo poo about Arabs being killed. Did you click that link and suddenly become filled with fierce moral urgency to send top State officials to end the massacre? gently caress no, you didn't.

Also that 'no concrete goal' pun was pretty bad, psydude.

Genocide Tendency is right; if the Israelis wanted to go full Lemay they could scrub Gaza clean in no time. They don't. If you want to know why the terrorist organization Hamas keeps rejecting truces, it's because idiots keep offering them more and more the longer they keep fighting. That's what keeps the current bloodshed going; without Kerry poking his huge botoxed head into it, Hamas gets a lot more introspective.

Speaking of places where the lessons of Iraq give us no excuse to be this terrible:
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2014/07/26/us/politics/ap-us-us-libya.html

quote:

The United States shuttered its embassy in Libya on Saturday and evacuated its diplomats to neighboring Tunisia under U.S. military escort as fighting intensified between rival militias. Secretary of State John Kerry said "free-wheeling militia violence" prompted the move.

American personnel at the Tripoli embassy, which had already been operating with limited staffing, left the capital around dawn and traveled by road to neighboring Tunisia, with U.S. fighter jets and other aircraft providing protection, the State Department said. The withdrawal underscored the Obama administration's concern about the heightened risk to American diplomats abroad, particularly in Libya where memories of the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in the eastern city of Benghazi are still vivid.

The evacuation was accompanied by a new State Department travel warning for Libya urging Americans not to go to the country and recommending that those already there leave immediately. "The Libyan government has not been able to adequately build its military and police forces and improve security," it said. "Many military-grade weapons remain in the hands of private individuals, including anti-aircraft weapons that may be used against civilian aviation."

Speaking Saturday in Paris where he was meeting with other diplomats on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Kerry said the U.S. remains committed to the diplomatic process in Libya despite the suspension of embassy activities there. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the evacuated employees will continue to work on Libyan issues in Tunis, elsewhere in North Africa and Washington.

Casualties in Libya are also pretty severe, but, well, Western world, dead browns, no Jews, meh

quote:

Taliban fighters are scoring early gains in several strategic areas near the capital this summer, inflicting heavy casualties and casting new doubt on the ability of Afghan forces to contain the insurgency as the United States moves to complete its withdrawal of combat troops, according to Afghan officials and local elders.

The Taliban have found success beyond their traditional strongholds in the rural south and are now dominating territory near crucial highways and cities that surround Kabul, the capital, in strategic provinces like Kapisa and Nangarhar. Their advance has gone unreported because most American forces have left the field and officials in Kabul have largely refused to talk about it. The Afghan ministries have not released casualty statistics since an alarming rise in army and police deaths last year.
...
At a time when an election crisis is threatening the stability of the government, the Taliban’s increasingly aggressive campaign is threatening another crucial facet of the American withdrawal plan, full security by Afghan forces this year. “They are running a series of tests right now at the military level, seeing how people respond,” one Western official said, describing a Taliban effort to gauge how quickly they could advance. “They are trying to figure out: Can they do it now, or will it have to wait” until after the American withdrawal, the official added, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the coalition has officially ceded security control.
...
But there are only anecdotal reports to help gauge just how deadly the offensive has been. The Afghan defense and interior ministries stopped releasing casualty data after a shocking surge of military and police deaths in 2013 began raising questions about the country’s ability to sustain the losses. By September, with more than 100 soldiers and police officers dying every week, even the commander of the International Security Assistance Force suggested the losses could not be sustained.

Asked for figures on the latest security force casualties this year, both ministries refused to provide data or confirm accounts from local officials. But there are signs that the casualty rate is already likely to be at least as bad as it was last year. In one important indicator, the United Nations reported a 24 percent rise in civilian casualties for the first half of this year compared with a similar period from 2013, hitting a new peak since the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan began tracking the data in 2009.

I'm not going to bother responding to the rest of your post, because I really don't care enough about I/P to bother debating sources of body counts (you're right, they are mostly unreliable, so there's really no point in trying to guess); however the reason why people are focusing on this is because Israel and Hamas are rational state actors that actually respond to diplomatic measures and the conflict is in an early enough stage where it can be effectively nipped in the bud. Syria and Libya have been going on for years at this point and frankly, trying to give a poo poo about them is hard because no amount of American meddling is going to fix either situation.

But they're not state actors, by any western, Weberian definition. You argued just a page or two ago that they didn't have a monopoly on force or control of law (the whole 'kidnappings and murders were by an independent sect, it's not Hamas's fault' business.) Most of the administrative responsibilities one would attribute to a state are handled by UNRWA (which you can argue is hopelessly peneterated with Hamas, but that's to put rocket launchers in schools, not to ensure better civic services.) They're an external terrorist group. Their leaders don't live in Gaza, even when it's safe; Khaled Meshal has never lived there, hasn't lived in anything close to a 'Palestine territory' since he was a child, and has spent less than a week in Gaza his whole life. It's much nicer to keep your wealth in Qatar (and until recently, Egypt.) They took over Gaza by throwing their (no better) Fatah opponents off the roofs of buildings. As that Tablet article I linked said, they're not working to a state in Gaza, they're building an unsinkable cruiser to fire rockets out of and launch commando raids, with the side-bonus of built-in troop regeneration.

Sure, they're 'rational' in the sense that after seeing how much press MH17 got, they focussed fire on Ben-Gurion in the hopes they'd get their own airliner kill, but that rationality isn't anything we would hopefully reward.

It's the Western, far-left obsession with the Jews and the Jewish side of I/P that blinds them to the Hamas side, which is cartoonishly evil. It's those guys still trying to overlay their fantasy of a peaceful Palestine that could be a party to a two-state solution over the reality in Gaza, that ensure this mess will keep flaring up and that people will keep dying. Psydude showed this just a page ago when he trotted out the old 'just open the borders' line, ignoring the painful evidence that even concrete will immediately be weaponized.

http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2014/07/hamas-gaza-tunnels-nasrallah-mahmoud-zahar-protective-edge.html

quote:

The Qassam Brigades' militants of today are children of the second intifada. Even before they were recruited or enlisted in the Qassam Brigades, they drank the jihadist messages that the movement spreads among all the needy of Gaza who knock on the gates of its institutions (the dawa — Hamas’ welfare institutions). The great neglect of Gaza in the years Israel controlled it helped Hamas to grow.

In the past, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians worked in Israel, learned its language, got to know its culture and even formed ties of friendship with their Israeli employers. In the course of the second intifada and Hamas’ rise to power, these ties have all been severed. The older generation found itself unemployed and without income and the youth found work with the militant wing of Hamas and the other organizations (Islamic Jihad as well as the popular resistance committees). These young men, who have not once in their lives left the borders of the Gaza Strip and have never seen Israel, have been fed the stories of the wonders of the Palestinian rocket, which was developed in Gaza’s workshops and can shake Israel. The stories of the glory of Hamas have been impressed well in the young recruits and the doctrine that has been so deeply etched in them has given them the feeling, or the delusion, that salvation could be gained through the rockets that have been developed in Gaza.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ORAM-usqhQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwxUjKSTm9c

None of the people subjected to stuff like this as a state education have any hope of being rational. On the Western side, to have any delusions left about Gaza, you basically have to have limited yourself to a thin, partisan slice of the media for at least the last ten years, but unfortunately I don't think that phenomenon's that uncommon.

Commoners posted:

It means that they're rationing all of their ammunition for a prolonged campaign :smug:

The Iranians claim they've only used about 3% of their rocket arsenal, but that's not stopping them from trying to buy more from the North Koreans.
