Hello everyone! My name is Fionordequester, and welcome to...

Alright, so, first things first, for those who are reading this, and are expecting more of an OP...well, this is a revival of a now archived Something Awful thread, which I unfortunately can't access because I never paid for the Forums Upgrade. So, here are all the previous chapters, for those who wish to see it (The Prologue being where all the Introductions are, as well as all the info you'll ever need to know about the different Apprentices. Would highly recommend reading that if you're new to the game)...

MAIN LP LIST:

Prologue-Welcome to the 7th Saga!

Episode 1-Old Men, Dogs, and Walls! The Ultimate Foes! (To Before Cave of Earth)

Episode 2-From Sea to Shining Sea

Episode 3-The Ebb and the Flow

Episode 4-And You Thought Grinding Was Just For Coffee?! (To Level 19)

Episode 5-Pathos of Olvan

Episode 6-Doom and Defeat on the Dunes of Despair (To Dowaine)

Episode 7-Reminiscence

Episode 8-Sweeping the Continent

Episode 9-The Finale, Part 1/4

Episode 10-The Finale, Part 2/4

And as for the other guys who have been awaiting the next update, and wonder why it took so long...well, basically the delay was due to a combination of school, my own OCD tendencies (I actually wanted to compose a custom boss theme, so I focused too much on that, despite not having the energy for it), and pure laziness. But I'm here now! So...

The 7th Saga Episode 11: The Finale, Part 3/4

Let's get this show on the road, shall we?

Fortunately, the exit isn't too far from where you defeat Monmo, so you won't be needing to fight anymore enemies once you kill him to death.

One last safe zone here, for you to rest, get ready, exit the Dungeon with the Wind Rune, whatever you wish. And then...the final dungeon...

...Yep, same generic, grey castle tiles and pallets that every other castle has used, so you're not getting anything special as far as that goes. So, might as well give you the map.

And speaking of bland, here are our final two enemies in the game...

This recolor on the right, who's notable only for having Heal3 and 90% Vacuum resistance...

And this recolor right here, notable only for it's 160 Speed, and the fact that, for whatever weird reason, the game designers made it so that you can't run away from it. Oh, and it also Heal3, but it has so little HP, that that's little more than a nuisance at this point...

And finally, we have some other side rooms (the rooms marked with the "Dungeon" sign on the maps)...

That "FS", btw, is this thing right here...

This sword is the strongest weapon that Esuna can equip right now, though not by a whole heck of a lot. Really though, while this area is cool, I'm not really sure what the point of it is, nor am I sure why the music changes. If anything, it seems like it would be more fitting to have it keep playing, ESPECIALLY with the lava...

In fact, this whole final area as whole confuses me. I don't understand the purpose of the layout, nor why there are two human-sized beds in the castle, nor why the game designers even went to the trouble of a Lava area if they weren't going to make you go through it.

If anything, I would think that, like Murdaw's Castle in Dragon Quest VI, that this area would be divided into three mandatory zones, the ice rooms, the lava rooms, and the castle itself, each with their own unique enemies. And of course, just like we had the Ice Dragon Monmo, who was ridiculously durable but lacking in offense, we would also have a Fire Dragon, who would maybe be lacking in defenses, but hit ridiculously hard. Either that, or it would be a copy of Monmo, except it would be weak to B. Ice's rather than B. Fire's (and therefore, actually giving a purpose to B. Ice's).

Really, what it all boils down to is that this is the final dungeon we're talking about, the thing that's supposed to be the big cap-off to our gaming experience, and yet, it feels like it was thrown together in like, a day or so, without any sort of planning, refining, or thinking behind it. And it's stuff like this, as well as the various other oddities in this game (like a faulty Magic formula) that really make me doubt that the game was actually fully finished before Enix pushed it out...

Anyways though, back to the game itself, one COOL thing about this dungeon is that you can actually avoid literally every single enemy in here! How do you do this? By following this video!

No Enemies!

So yes, as you can see, whenever you enter, the game resets the positioning of all the enemies in the room. And since this particular dungeon has so many doors with not much spacing between them, you can literally exit and re-enter each room ad nauseum, until you can get a clear, unobstructed path to the next door you have to go to!

That said, let's just get to...

The big man himself...

Gariso.

Gariso: Are you Lux? Congratulations! I'm surprised that you made it this far. I would honor your display of courage, but I'm about to put an end to it!

And if you lose and challenge him again...

Gariso: Fool! Haven't you learned your lesson?! You will never win.

I love just how randomly placed those exclamation points are. Like, the guy yells and screams at you the first few seconds, but then suddenly switches to deadpan monotone the next. And then of course, there's the fact that he says "fool", as in singular, rather than "fools", as in plural...does the game not expect me to have a partner or something?

Anyways though, this is the last boss, so let's get on with it!

So to begin with, the dude is invisible, presumably by the power of the Wizard Rune. So, since we can't attack him, let us now see the Moonlight in action!

Yeeeah boy! Now we got him! So what's he gonna do now? Well, first of all...

He'll do that every three turns in order to turn invincible. Because I guess annoying gimmicks are like, the theme of this continent or something. Fortunately, we already got the answer to that! But yeah, anything else, you might ask? Well...

...Actually...

...Um...

...Heh, heh, heh...

..........

Yeah, I got nothin'. Sorry that this isn't really all that exciting, especially since this is both the final boss fight AND an update that's been through yet another huge delay, but...what else can I really say about this fight? Other than that whole disappearing thing, it's just the same drunken slapfight that almost every other boss fight has been thus far...

I mean, I'm sorry to say it, but this fight really has not given me anything to work with. The only interesting thing I can say is that Gariso here is actually weaker in some stats (such as Guard) than the likes of M. Pison, just to bring home how disappointing this final boss is.

So here's the end of the fight...Kind of odd that we still get experience and gold at the end of the game, but it's no matter, because now, after all the times we've been killed by zombies, androids, floating brains, and whatever freaky things the game has thrown at us throughout our quest...

We finally, FINALLY have...THE LAST RUUUNE!!! YAHOOOOO!! ABOUT FRICKEN TIME RIGHT?!? Yeah, all of you guys at home, I'll bet you'd never thought we would actually get through this game. But here we are, now able and ready to...

...Huh?

W-What was that? What do you mean "returned"? How're you...

W-wait, no, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

The power has finally returned to me! It's free from the Runes.

H-Hey! You...you can't do this to me game! Don't you DARE try to tell me that...that this whole quest...

Heh, heh, heh. You don't understand, do you? After all, I trained each of you.

...No...that's imPOSSible!!

:byodood:

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

???: Lemele has been dead for five years. I took care of him when I arrived here. I came from the past through a time tunnel. My real name is Gorsia!

...:cripes:.......Ok, so I know this is looking bad, but we can salvage this! Yeah, cuz...cuz...

Gorsia: Thanks to your efforts, I've regained my power.

...cuz he's like, monologuing right now, so. If we can just...walk up, and like...deck him in the face...

Gorsia: Now I will avenge my exile and imprisonment!

...Yeah, that'll totally work! Just take a B. Power, charge him when he's not looking, and just GO TO TOWN ON THIS...

Gorsia: And for that I do not need you. I banish you into the darkness!

...PIECE OF GARBAGE AND.....wait, what was that?

Wait, no! It can't end like this! Who's going to stop Gorsia now?!? Anybody? ANYBODY?!?

...Heh...heh heh heh...HAAAA, HA HA HA HA! Sigh...So...so that's it then, huh? All that time...all that work I did...and it's all gonna end like this...

WELL SCREW YOU GAME! SCREW YOU! ALL THIS TIME, ALL THAT TIME GRINDING AND DYING!!! AND THIS IS THE ENDING WE GET?!? WHAT KIND OF LAZY, DIMWITTED, MISANTHROPIC PINHEADS WOULD EVER EVEN THINK TO WRITE AN ENDING LIKE-

...Huh?......Wait...

What is this?

Well, I'll be. We're alive!! How wonderful!! Dunno how we did it, but does it matter? We're alive! We're alive! YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

I dunno WHY we're alive, but...oh well. What shall we do now? Where are we? And how will we make amends for our horrible mistake?
Found out, next time, on 3.25/4 of the Finale, on Let's Play The 7th Saga! Have a nice day, and God bless you all!

Looking forward to seeing the end of this. But I don't quite understand how Gorsia got the runes from us? Did he like magically get them the instant we touched them? If so, why not just magically steal it from Gariso?*

*Also, I certainly hope there's something like "Gorsia and Gariso are related" or whatever. Because otherwise, it's flat out idiotic to have two characters who show up at the same time have such similar names.

The way I understand it, he levitated them out of our hands (hence those blue balls of light in the GIF), then smashed them and released the power that was inside them. Although why he even bothered to have Gariso fight us rather than just kill Gariso himself, and then kill us? I dunno, but I know we wouldn't have had our dramatic "fight" (if you can even call it that) with Gariso if he had done that, so it might just be artistic license.

I know right? And it doesn't look like it's just a localization thing either. Looking at the text dump, Gorsia and Gariso are each called "Goshia" and "Gariusu" in the Japanese version, so they're still incredible similar.

Alright, hello everyone, this is Fionordequester here, still trying to get back into the groove of LPing after having been away for entirely too long. So...here's a short little mini-update in which we finally disprove one of the most ridiculous rumors about this game, namely, that at this point, it is actually possible to get stuck in a situation where you literally CANNOT beat any of the enemies here if you enter here at too low of a level (personally, Level 25 was about as low as I could go). Yes, you can literally get into a situation where the game is completely, literally, UNBEATABLE...or so the rumor goes...

So, a bit of context, as well as our stats.

We have literally hit a point of no return, partially because we don't have the Wind Rune, but mainly because of...well, plot reasons that we'll get into later. So, if one was under the impression that Gariso was going to be the final boss, and proceeded to blow all their B. Powers, all their Potion 3's, all their B. Defense's, and etc. etc., then you can see how this point of know return would really suck for anyone who didn't see it coming.

Moreover, all those monsters that we've fought before? We're not going to be able to fight them, so the weakest enemy we're ever going to be able to fight from here on out is this cool looking dude...

Nice huh? This here is the Ghoul, and he's NOT a recolor! WAHOO!! And yes, we'll be getting a few new unique monster sprites as we go long, so be excited for that!

Anyways though, let's see how Lux does here, at Level 25, and with some Speed seeds I believe...

Ack! Shoot! I missed! Oh well, your turn Ghoul!

Double ack! That dude just hit me HARD yo! That's about how hard Gariso hit us when we used B. Protects on him! Still, the dude can't be THAT bad, can he? Maybe that miss was a fluke after all...

Or...maybe not. So things are not looking good for us. Oh well, guess this is-

Yep, yep, that's about what I figured. And while we never actually landed any attacks, it wouldn't have mattered anyways, because...

Yeah, one damage. That's literally ALL Lux can do to him without a B. Power. This is because this freak has 280 Guard, which means that if your character doesn't have higher than around 140 Attack, then they're not going to do any more damage than that. And then of course, there's always the chance that you'll get THIS battle...

And I DON'T think I need to tell you how bad THAT is for a Level 25 character who's all on his/her own. And what's more, we're doing this whole thing under the assumption that the player has literally blown ALL their items just on beating Gariso AND has gotten their partner killed. So, given these conditions, one can see why people might be inclined to believe this rumor...

However, there's something that people seem to forget to consider in all this, mainly, that, even if you blew everything on Gariso, you STILL have some options to work with. Because first of all, if you chose any of these guys...

Then there's NO chance of you ever getting stuck. The reason? Because Kamil, Esuna, and Lejes all learn the Vacuum spell before Level 25, and while the Ghoul's are insanely fast (120 Speed, way more than the 75-100 Speed that any of the apprentices are putting up), their Vacuum resistance is only 30%, so of course you're going to EVENTUALLY land Vacuum on one of them. And as for Valsu, he knows Revive1 AS WELL as every single support spell in the game. So not only can he revive people, but he can also buff ALL of their stats high enough to totally SCHOOL those stupid Ghouls!

As for Olvan, Lux, and Wilme...well, none of those guys are lucky enough to have the Vacuum spell (well, technically Wilme does, but only at Level 28). And while I'm unsure about whether or not Olvan's "Defense1" spell is enough to ensure him a victory (I'm guessing not though), Wilme is obviously not doing much better than Lux...

Still, these guys should still be fine. Because remember, at the end of each fight, you always get a Gold reward as well as an EXP. reward, and in Gariso's case...

He gives you a pretty hefty amount of Gold. So let's see what we can buy with 2200G...

Ah! Well that's cool! They got B. Powers here, and for only 100G!

Oh, and we can also save, of course. Heck, technically you don't even need to actually spend the night here in order to save your game, but, may as well right? So, anything else to get?

*gasp*, what's this?! Only 500G to revive your partner?! Don't mind if I do, because NOW, we can actually beat those Ghouls, even if we DON'T have any B. Powers. In fact, I'll demonstrate that right now!

So, since we know that our attacks do only 1 Damage if we have 140 Attack or less, we're going to do a Defend-Attack instead, and see what happens.

Ok, so now the Ghoul isn't doing nearly so much damage, that is good...

And BOOYAH! 40 Damage all up in your grill! Because if you remember, whenever you do a Defend-Attack, your Attack Power is multiplied by 1.5x. So if you happen to have exactly 140 Attack Power, a Defend-Attack will then raise it to 210 Attack Power instead, meaning you'd now hit for around 70 Damage...

Unfortunately, we don't even have THAT much in the way of offense, so let's see how that pans out...

Ok, so the Ghoul still has an overwhelming advantage in offense...

And D'oh! That's a miss!

One more attempted Defend-Attack by Lux means that he also suffers less damage, which is good...

And Lux actually lands another Defend-Attack! That's VERY good!

That though...not so much :argh:. So, it still lucks like at least one of my guys might bite it. Unless...

*gasp*, what's this? Why, I do believe...

YES! A critical! It's a critical hit :woop:! Alright!

So, just in case you needed anymore proof that you can still survive Ghoul encounters, there we go. One Ghoul, done n' dusted, without even a single use of a B. Power or anything. And considering that B. Powers are easily buyable for only 100G a pop, I do believe I've made my point...

I mean yeah, you CAN still get stuck if you happen to do something stupid like, say, going out into the overworld without saving, die and lose 1100G, then go out into the overworld, AGAIN without saving, die, lose 550G, then go out into the overworld once more while STILL not saving your game, and then die, and lose 275G, therefore making it so that you don't have enough money to revive your partner. Either that, or you can just blow every last dime on items at the item store, and then waste so many of them that you can't sell them back for enough money...

So basically, anyone who makes it to this point of the game would have to be...

1) Unlucky enough to not have chosen anyone who learns Vacuum or Revive1.

2) STUPID enough to have blown not one, not two, but THREE opportunities to revive their partner and save at the Inn...

3) And yet are still somehow able to get all the way here at the extremely low levels that I'm talking about. And if anyone's so stupid that the above condition is true...then most likely, there's no way they would get here at JUST Level 25 or so.

Now, THAT BEING SAID, the game still takes a pretty steep climb in difficulty here, for the following reasons...

1) First and foremost, we don't have our Runes anymore. And in case you're wondering, no, we're NOT getting them back. And considering that we've spent the entire game relying on them thus far, THAT'S gonna take some getting used to. No more spamming the Water Rune to heal up to max HP at the end of every fight, no more free stat boosts, no more warping to towns, no more healing up to max MP at the end of all fights...yep, none of those options are there anymore. So you can see how that kind of sucks, especially since...

2) The monsters are a great deal stronger than what we've been facing so far. I mean heck, the Ghoul was bad enough just from what we've seen of it. But in addition to already having 120 Speed and 280 Guard, it ALSO has both Heal2 AND Revive1, meaning that just killing two of them at once is going to be a nightmare, whether you have B. Powers or not. And as we go along, they will only get stronger...and stronger..and stronger...and stronger :gonk:...

3) Due to what I can only describe as either the most jerkish move EVER, or some stupid programming oversight, we literally cannot buy anymore B. Defenses. Yes, you read that right. We can't find anymore in any chests, and no shops will ever sell them anymore...

It cannot be overstated how difficult the game becomes without them. For example, I'm basically a master of this game, and even I cannot even so much as proceed to the next town unless I take both of my Level 25 guys, and grind them up to Level 35. AND THAT'S JUST TO GET TO THE NEXT TOWN!!

So yes, while you can't really get stuck persay, this is a point in the game where gamers very commonly just give up and quitting in frustration. And if you ask me, this is probably how this rumor got started. Some guy got here, couldn't proceed anywhere past the first town, and just rage quit before he could level up enough to get to the next town. Add in some angry forum post by said user, and then have that angry post exaggerated via a game of Telephone, and PRESTO! You've got this myth that we have now.

So, whenever anyone starts talking all about how you can get stuck here or whatever brew-ha-ha they might say, remember...

The rumor is unfounded and stupid. Don't pay any attention.

This is Fionordequester, signing out. Have a nice night, and God bless you!

The 7th Saga Episode 13: Trapped in a World of Fading Hope

Hello everyone, and welcome to Let's Play The 7th Saga! So now that we've gotten those unfounded and stupid rumors out of the way...let's see what's changed. Let's figure out just where the heck Gorsia sent us...

The name of this town? It's Pharano. Where are you from?

If you go south, you'll find a large town, called Pasanda. It will take a while to get there.

You are new here. Where are you from?

I'm glad you have recovered. I've never heard of the towns and countries you mentioned...Where did you come from?

Huh. So I guess we're in an entirely different continent? Where exactly would THAT be on the map? I could've sworn I've already been everywhere...but whatever, that's not the most pressing issue right now. Right now, Gorsia is in power, and we gotta stop him quick! So, what can we do?

I heard that SARO defeated GORSIA. I'm relieved. We are safe.

The monsters will have to return to the Dark World now that GORSIA is gone.

I hear that SARO defeated GORSIA. So, peace and prosperity will return to us.

...Yes, Saro did defeat Gorsia...and that was about 2000 years ago. I don't know where you've been for all that time, but times have changed dude. Any chance of finding someone more helpful?

It's a terrible time because the two worlds, Light and Dark, are fighting. There is nothing we can do about it.

It's been a while since the two worlds have collided.

Well...kind of I guess. At least they know there's an actual struggle going on...still not too helpful though. Any other info we can gleam from these people?

I was hotheaded, too, when I was young.

I'm the one who found you. I couldn't believe it when I found you where the lightning struck!

Take care

No? Well ok then. So, before heading out, be sure to buy some more B. Powers as well as this helpful little number right here...

This particular version of the M. Herb restores 40 MP rather than the usual 20, and even though it's a little overpriced, it's still relatively helpful for surviving the enemies we'll be facing now.

However, before you go buying a ton of stuff, you'll want to try to save about 18,000-19,000G if you happen to be either Olvan or Kamil. In fact, while we're on the topic, you're also really going to be wanting to put the Ice Robe on them, because there's one particular enemy who will just murder you in the face with Blzzrd2. You'll see why soon, but for now, let's just head on to Pasanda, shall we?

Now, where exactly ARE we anyways? Maybe our Map can help us out?

Huh...it apparently cannot. For whatever reason, it's not even showing where we are at all! What's the deal? Is this continent one that, for whatever reason, is hidden away from the map we have? Now this is getting really mysterious...

But before we go exploring said mysteries at Pasanda, we've got some new enemies to deal with!

Now this guy we've already seen before, and he wasn't SO bad (at least, not for an adequately prepared party). So, let's take some time to talk about the new battle music we have, because yes, we DO have new battle music now, called...

Battle in a World of Fading Hope

And man is it awesome! It really is a unique song in that it's very energetic...and yet, it's not necessarily happy either. But at the same time, it's not really doom and gloom, like you would expect from a title like this. In that way, it's got a very unique take on a post-apocalyptic world in that, it sort of emphasizes "yeah, things are kind of bad...", but then goes on to say "even so, we haven't given up yet!". You get this sense that, even with Gorsia having seemingly won, even with all the immensely powerful monsters running around, and even with their backs pressed against the world, our heroes are still FAR from quitting. Giving up is the absolute LAST thing on their minds!

Plus, it's really got a sense of finality to it, like we're drawing close to the end of the game, and close to settling things with Gorsia once and for all. Oh yeah, and of course, the instrumentation is awesome, with that constant, savage drum beat pounding beneath the main melody, the way in which the different melodies blend together so well...ya just gotta love it. Course, still doesn't beat Kamil's theme, but this definitely is a close 2nd, if ever there was one!

But, enough about that, let's talk about the monsters itself, shall we? I mean, yes, we talked about this guy last mini-update, but one thing I didn't mention...well, let's put it this way.

See how there are two enemies here? Well, if you happen to kill one of them, and there still happens to be a Ghoul left, that Ghoul will very likely try to do this!

Yeah, yeah, yeah...it's yet another one of those monsters who will revive dead enemies, and just annoy the tar out of you if you don't take it out right away.

Fortunately, "taking it out" is one thing that you should be more than prepared to do if you've been saving those Vacuums like me! But of course, Ghouls are far from the only friendly face we're gonna be seeing on this continent, so things are definitely gonna be heating up soon. But for now...

Meet, the Dergun! Yes, Dergun, as opposed to Dragon. Anyways, he's a little tougher than the Ghoul, but not by much. Takes 40 less damage from physical attacks, has 10 more Power and Speed than the Ghoul, blah blah blah. Also has higher resistances, but nothing major...

So, those two aren't so bad, but unfortunately, once you get really close to Pasanda, that's when things start to heat up a little, with two more new enemies, one of which is able to really mess up your day.

In terms of stats, Magic is the only significant upgrade in terms of stats, but other than that, he's not much of an upgrade. So the only noticeable thing about this guy is that he can do THIS.

Yes, Vacuum2, meaning he could theoretically wipe out your party in an instant. However, you should still have plenty of Harps, so even with that, he shouldn't be too bad. No, here's who you should really be worried about...

The Serpant. NOW we're getting back into Flame and Sage territory. THIS particular enemy has an enormous Magic and Speed lead over the others, sporting 200 and 180 respectively. And considering that, even using my strategies, you'll only have around 120 Magic, and around 140 Speed (MAYBE 170 Speed if you're lucky)...yeah, you're already at a significant statistical disadvantage.

But that's not all. Guess how much damage this creature can do with it's spells?

Oh yeah, THAT'S the 7th Saga that I'm used to! Of course, even then, the Serpant isn't as bad as some previous enemies, because it can also do this...

And it's physical attack isn't that strong either (can't even OHKO Esuna in fact), so it's STILL not quite as bad as those other two enemies...but still, you get the point. And good luck running from it of course, if you happen to be out of B. Agilities. So, how do we deal with these guys? Actually, it's quite simple...just do this to all of them!

Of course, you'll want to use a B. Agility on whoever your faster character is, so that you can actually HIT the Serpant, but that's about it for my strategy. I mean, you're most likely running low on B. Agilities at this point, and Pharano doesn't have any B. Agilities on hand.

Fortunately though, the enemies only have 30-40% resistance to Vacuum, and since you should still have some of those left, this'll probably be your go-to strategy for this particular update. Plus, guys like Olvan and Kamil are going to want to get to Level 34 before the final boss, and since bosses alone will only get them to Level 33, this is the perfect opportunity to gain some experience :)!

So, here's the route to Pasanda...

Yikes. That's a lot of walking, isn't it? In fact, it's also pretty easy to get lost due to all the mountains in your way, and how much they snake around. So one thing I would highly suggest is to always make sure the shoreline is visible as you're walking to Pasanda. Like so...

Now, like I said, the Serpants don't really start appearing until you start getting close to Pasanda, so the long walk isn't as brutal as you might fear. So, what's going on in Pasanda? Well, not a whole lot actually, as we'll soon see...

So, as you can see, it's surrounded by forests...I don't really know how in the world THAT could be the case considering what the town looked like on the world map...

But let's just see what everyone's saying, shall we?

Many young artists gather in the town of Pasanda.

This town is well known for its artistic culture.

I have to take singing lessons everyday and I don't have time to play. I can't stand it anymore!

I'm composing music which will bring courage to the people.

I'm going to paint a picture of SARO for the people in the future.

I've been working hard for 17 years just to become a nobody. I wonder if I really have a talent.

Do you know the name of this planet? It's Ticondera. I wonder who created this planet?

Huh...ok, so it's, "a town of starving artists", as Nakar would say? Still, I don't mind it the way he did. I mean, after what just happened last main update, we need our comic relief somewhere, right? Speaking of comic relief...

I really don't know what the deal is with this guy. I get the impression that there's supposed to be some kind of joke here, but if there was, I'm not seeing it. Is this another thing that got lost in localization? Or is this some joke about him being a big procrastinator or something? You got me on that one readers...

But anyways, there actually is plot relevant stuff here...

I felt a terrible pain three days ago, and I sensed SARO trying to tell me something. I'm afraid something has happened to him.

Oh...my. For reference, we were in a coma for about a week after Gorsia zapped us with lightning, so it seems Gorsia's definitely been up to no good, despite some people saying that he's dead for whatever reason. So, anymore info?

Returning from Ligena, Belma has a strange story to tell. Go to the tavern and catch the story.

Alright then, to the bar we go! First, we get this bit of nonsense out of the way.

The famous artist, Abico, is said to have enjoyed the cider here.

Barca: This cider has a perfect flavor. It's definitely one of my favorites.

And then we move on to what is probably the biggest bombshell you will see in this update.

Don't be ridiculous! SARO can't be defeated.

It's really true. People in Ligena were telling me that GORSIA defeated SARO. If you don't believe me, go to Ligena, close to the west river, and find out for yourself.

Can you believe SARO was defeated? I don't want to!

And then of course, there's this other bombshell right here...

I hear that there is a country on the northwest continent by the name of Melenam, and it has an incredibly advanced civilization. I wish to go there someday.

So, yes, in case you haven't figured it out by now, we are in the past. THAT'S why nobody in Pharano recognized the town names we spouted out, THAT'S why our magic map isn't telling us where we are, and THAT'S why everyone is talking about the battle between Gorsia and Saro like it all happened yesterday. Because for them, it basically DID happen yesterday!

And, judging by what these people are saying, Saro and Gorsia have had yet another match while we were knocked out, and this time, well...let's just say Saro was...not quite so lucky as he was last time :sigh:.

But, is he dead? Truly? Or is there a chance that we can actually team up, and take Gorsia down together? Or heck, maybe Saro could even be like, another party member or something? One can hope right? But before we find out whether or not that is the case, let's take a brief trip to the item shop.

Now be absolutely SURE you buy 9 B. Agilities before moving on, and of course...

Save at the Inn. Just saying, it'd REALLY suck if you died, and had to go all the way back to Pharano... I mean look at this!

JUST LOOK AT THIS! Do you really want to do all that walking again, in addition to all the walking you have to do hear?! I didn't think so!

Now then, easiest way to not get lost, I think, is to hug the mountains, going past the gap pictured above. Once you pass that gap however, you can pretty much find your way just by following the mountains. Otherwise, if you DON'T follow the mountains, I find that I'll often wind up on that dead-end peninsula on the southwest corner of the map. Anyways though, one last enemy before we move on to the next town...

The Spirit, shown on the left there. This guy can ALSO hit your entire party with multi-target spells.

Now, that being said, there's some good news with this guy...and then there's some bad news. The good news is, it's not as resistant to Vacuum as the Serpant is, so casting it down into oblivion is much easier. In addition, while it's Speed is only 20 points lower than the Serpant, it's MAGIC is far, far lower, meaning it will only do about this much...

The bad news...well, first of all, it doesn't have Petrify or MPCatcher, so it's not wasting it's turn with useless spells the way that the Serpant does sometimes. Secondly, it does 50 more Damage with it's physical attacks, so that's something to watch out for. Third, unlike the Serpant, they can appear along with some other enemies, so that's never good. Fourth, it also has some good hit-all attacks. But, worst of all, it can do...this.

Yep. That's bad. What's more, you've probably run out of Vacuum items by now, so there's not any good way to oneshot it either. And even if there was...well, guess what Ghouls can do?

Oh yeah, that's right. The game's been pulling this garbage on us since the very second update, and by golly, it's going to KEEP pulling this same stunt till the very end! Fortunately, we don't have to put up with it, because we've got...

Our B. Agilities, which allow us to run from...well, pretty much everything, even if it might take a few tries. And if you remember that one update from Patrof, the game totals together the Speed of ALL the monsters in whatever fight you run from before dividing that total Speed by the amount of monsters there were in that fight. So, even if the Spirits DO manage to use Agility, you should still be able to reliably run away from any fights where they are paired with a lower Speed enemy.

And if they're alone, well, the Spirit's magic attacks aren't hitting nearly as hard as the Serpant's, and it's added Physical prowess doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot when you consider how much Guard Lux already has. So, in spite of some rather annoying things about them, the Spirit's aren't quite as bad as the Serpant's.

So, that all said, one thing I should note is that, for however the localizers tinkered with the game, and for ever much they boosted enemy stats to infinity...most of the enemies you fight in this part of the game are actually relatively untouched! Yeah, that's right, that Serpant? That dude's got 200 Magic and 180 Speed no matter what version you're playing. And out of all of the other 12 new monsters we'll be seeing before we fight Gorsia, only 4 of them have had any meaningful boost to their stats. And out of those 4 enemies, only 1 of them can be found anywhere but the final dungeon.

So in other words? This part of the game was just as much, if not even moreso, of a difficulty spike in the original version as it was in this version! Heck, even PJ, the World Record holder of Elnard, actually stops to grind seven levels in Monmo's Cave before going to the past! And that guy certainly wasn't any slouch either!

Anyways, speaking of levels...

I actually manage to get to Level 33, which means, that aside from bosses, Lux is literally done leveling up! That's right, after everything that the game has put us through, we are now, at long last, strong enough to finish the job...even if we do have to run from basically everything in order to do it....

It's actually somewhat of a cathartic, empowering feeling, and yet, slightly sad at the same time, knowing that you're now coming to the end of a long, hard slog that, nevertheless, is going to be one of the most memorable experiences you've ever had. Because folks...we are just about at the end of the game, and by extension, the end of the LP. And even if getting up the motivation to do it wasn't always easy...it was definitely fun all the same.......

ANYWAYS, let's go see what's up in Ligena, SHALL WE?!?

So before we obey those lovely balloons...let's get some stuff out of the way first. Now, if you happen to be Kamil or Olvan, you'll want to head to the Armor Shop to get something...

Yeah, remember how I talked about how pathetically weak and overpriced the weapons and armor were in this game? Well once you get to the Past, that's when that finally, finally starts changing! You see, the Attack and Defense values of equipment absolutely skyrocket once you get to the Past, which means they're actually remotely USEFUL for a change!!

Now that the shopping is done, the dialogue is next! First, the miscellaneous stuff that has nothing to do with anything...

This is the kingdom of Ligena.

Really now? Hardly looks like a kingdom to me, but ok :psyduck:.

I WAS CREATED IN MELENAM FOR DEFENSE PURPOSES.

MY DUTY IS TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE.

Ropesu must be starting a new business. He always finds valuable goods in Melenam and brings them over here to sell.

I hear Ropesu purchased something incredible for 7000000 G.

And there we go. Knowing this game, and how bluntly it's NPC's are in telling you what place or what person is important...this Ropesu guy will probably come into play later. But for now, let's see just what these guys have to say about Gorsia and Saro, shall we?

I hear SARO was defeated. Is it true? If it is, I don't know what will happen to us.

What will happen now that SARO was defeated?

I just can't believe that SARO was defeated.

Who can we rely on?

Nobody, no matter who, will be able to stop the coming trouble.

It's the end of the world! We will not have a chance against the power that even SARO couldn't defeat.

Oookay then. Good to see everyone's in high spirits.......:sigh:...

Ok, but seriously, anything else we can do? Is there anyone who can possibly-

You will find out more about it when you see the elder. Please go to the palace at once.

Ah, wow! Cool! A conveniently placed man who not only conveniently knows we're looking for something, but also points us towards the building that's very conveniently placed straight north of the fountain! How convenient!

What's not so convenient though, is the fact that this NPC happens to be placed right smack in the middle of here...

Yeah...yeah, that's where we gotta go, and by golly, he's not moving one inch till we talk to that Elder (located in the "Hey! Head inside me!" building). In fact, it seems the Elder is SO desperate to talk to you, that when you talk to the other NPC's in the building, most of them will only say this...

5x Holy Men: Please talk to the elder first.

So you're not getting anything from them just yet. Anyways, can this elder guy actually fill us in on just what is going on? Can he really?...

Well, actually yes...a little too well in fact...

You are the person who came from the future... As you might already know, You've traveled 5000 years into the past.

No, that incorrect capitalization was not me, that was the game. As for already knowing that I'm from the future, I'd like to ask how he figured it out...buuuuut, since I am kind of a robot, I guess that's not too strange.

GORSIA wields mighty powers of magic. He has plans to conquer the world. Once, SARO defeated GORSIA and sealed his power in the Seven Runes. However, GORSIA had some magic left.

This next part below however is where things start getting a little weird...

He fled into the future, where SARO could not reach him. GORSIA knew he could not get the Runes himself, so he sent you after them. When you brought the Runes to him, he succeeded in freeing his power. Didn't you notice each Rune had a mysterious power? The power you felt was GORSIA'S.

...

.......

So, after that...EPIC exposition dump...I've got just one question, mainly, HOW IN THE PEARLY MACKERAL DO YOU KNOW ALL THIS?!? Who in the world ARE you, Dr. Who? Or maybe a Time Guardian? Or something like that? Cuz I don't have any clue how you could possibly know what the heck Gorsia was up to all that time! Or how you know Gorsia couldn't get the Runes by himself...or how you knew what relationship I had with him prior to his betrayal...

I mean really, I know the writing in this game isn't the greatest, but this...yikes! Not only is this like the mother of all exposition, but the stuff that this guy somehow already knows is just insane. And there's no reason for it! I mean, as far as we know, the guy is just some ordinary Priest dude who might maybe have some Crystal Balls or something, but if he seriously has THIS much knowledge and foresight...just why was Ticondera not ready for Gorsia's return?...

Oh well, maybe I should just assume that my PC is actually talking to everyone in-universe? Instead of just being mute? So maybe he told the Sage all that info about what happened in the future? I dunno, but man is this moment weird...

Oh well, at least those five other dudes have some new things to say!

We think you can save SARO. Will you help us?

The battle between SARO and GORSIA almost destroyed this world.

When the power of GORSIA was resurrected, SARO knew he would not win this time. Nevertheless, he went to Gorfun to face GORSIA and was defeated. GORSIA stole SARO's power and confined him in the Barrier. We want to save him, but we can't even get close to the Barrier.

So that's where Saro is. Trapped in some place we don't know, though fortunately, the other two guys at least tell us where to go!

People in Melenam, on the northern continent, are trying to use scientific methods to defeat GORSIA. Will you go there?

Dude, I'm a fricken robot! How much more science do you need?! I AM science!!

Someone in this town has an aircraft called AIRSHIP. Use the AIRSHIP to reach Melenam, across the ocean.

So there we go. We've got our destination, we've got our method of travel, and we've got that guy out of the way! Only thing is, we need Ropesu to agree to take us on his ship, and considering what the last two town NPC's have to say about him...

You know what? Ropesu spends too much money!

He is very protective of the AIRSHIP and won't even show it to you. I'm sure you'll find an entrance to the hidden path by his house.

...Yeah, that's kind of worrying. Some folks don't seem to think too highly of him...but hey, what can we do? So, let's go to the building marked "And then me!", and we'll see!

Now, while I don't have a map for this, Ropesu's house has three floors, and has a ton of doors, so it can seem confusing your first time. But, if you just take the stairs to the 3rd floor of the house...

You'll find him right on top! But will he be willing to help us?

Ropesu: Do you wish to ride on the AIRSHIP? I will let you take a ride, if you pay me 7000 G.

Yes, but not enough money

Ropesu: You don't have enough money. Come back later.

No

Ropesu: No? I'll be here if you change your mind.

So, alright! Looks like our worries were for naught. In faaaaaact...if you have Esuna in the lead...

Ropesu: Are you interested in the AIRSHIP? A pretty girl like you is a welcome guest on my ship. Would you like to take a ride?

We get to go on it for free! And after going through a short underground path...

We get more talking...

...So what, you built this huge underground tunnel for 7,000,000G? Man, those Melenamians sure are good contractors!

Ropesu: The pilot inside will take you to Melenam.

All joking aside however, yeah, it's just an entrance to this place.

Yeah, no fancy map this time, sadly :( . And what's also unfortunate, is that most of the NPC's on this ship are not very interesting since most of them just say...

7x Knights: Esuna, talk to the pilot.

And that's it. And of course, the Captain himself is also pretty simple in what he says...

Captain: Esuna, Ropesu told me about you. Let's go!

Pretty cut and dry right, no? But at the very least, we get some neat treasure, located in rooms 3, 5, and 6!

I mean, it's nothing great, but hey, at least it's another 4100G worth of assets if Kamil and Olvan don't have enough for the Chain Mail! And if even that's not enough, well, there is a more...interesting way of doing all this!

See, if you head inside one of those doors instead...

You'll come into a room kind of like this one, with one or two dressers that you can walk behind. And one of these rooms (either on the first or second floor) will have a secret passageway behind a dresser that will allow you to head inside the tunnel all by yourself. So you don't have to pay Ropesu at all if you don't want to!

Unfortunately though, it's entirely random which room actually has the secret passage. But even so, this is actually the faster way of getting to where you need to go, for reasons that we'll see in just a few seconds, but for now, let's just see what the NPC's say when we're not actually allowed in the airship.

7x Knights: Stop! Unless you have a pass, this area is off-limits. Get out!

They're not kidding about that either, when you talk to them, they actually do force you off the ship, and back outside Ropesu's house, though you'll still be able to sneak in once again. I mean, the entrance will be in a different room, so that's kind of a pain, but otherwise, there's no harm in getting kicked out.

Anyways though, once you sneak into the Airship, all you have to do is talk to the captain at the top floor of the Airship...

Captain: Are we leaving now? Ready? Off to Melenam we go!

...And he'll give you your ride!

Captain: We should be able to find a lot of valuable goods, since technology is so advanced.

Awesome-sauce! And what's more awesome, assuming that you snuck in the Airship rather than paying Ropesu, is that if you talk to one of the guards...

You get to warp straight to the entrance of the ship, which cuts out a lot of tedious backtracking! But the real exciting thing about the town, at least, if you're Lux, is this marked building here, to the northwest!

And when I say upgrade, I don't mean just any upgrade...

I mean, an actual upgrade! And hoo-boy are we gonna have some fun with this one, NEXT TIME, in another mini-update on "Let's Play The 7th Saga!". Have a nice day, and God bless you all!

Fionordequester
Dec 27, 2012

Actually, I respectfully disagree with you there. For as obviously flawed as this game is, there ARE a lot of really good things about it. The presentation and atmosphere, for example, are the most immediate things. No other Yu-Gi-Oh game goes out of the way to really make
Mini-Update #7: The Fabulous Tune-Up Glitch!

Hello everyone, this is Fionordequester, and today, we've got a special bonus episode of what is probably the greatest thing in the entire game! So let's get to it, shall we?

Now, you see this dude here? Well he doesn't do anything if you have anyone but Lux in the front of your party. But if you DO have Lux there (or if you kill off the one who is in front)...

He will boost your HP and MP by 30, and every other stat by 20 points :woop: ! And of course, that in itself is a pretty significant boost...buuuuuut, there's also something reaaaaaaally juicy that you can do? So, first of all, when the guy gives you your Tune-up, this happens...

I have no idea what he means by your Power increasing by one, but whatever. So, nothing TOO seemingly unusual about that, right? Well, what many people don't know, is that while the Tune-Up is happening, you can do THIS!

Yeah! I don't know why, but the game actually lets you MOVE while he's doing the power up! And what's more? For whatever weird, weird reason, the game even lets you go through wall, hence why we can use the stairs! So that's pretty awesome...But what's even more awesome, is that if you go down the stairs and talk to the scientist again...

It's the exact same dialogue as before! So, yes, what this means, is that you can literally do this over...and over...and over again! Like so!

Lux Becomes a Deity

And there we go! Instant game-breaker in a can! Even at just around 300 Power and Guard, this Lux will just steamroll any enemy that doesn't happen to be Gorsia. And even with him, the fight is still tilted in Lux's favor, so...yeah.

But, that's not enough, is it? You all want to know "what's the catch?", don't you? Well, unfortunately, there is a slight one, though, it's not that big of a deal really. You see...performing this trick isn't as simple as simply holding the right button and never letting go. No, you have to go at least a teensy bit slower than that, otherwise, you'll get this...

And then when you go back down, you'll find that the scientist won't give you any more power ups. This is why, if you check the "LUX BECOMES A DEITY!!" video, you'll notice that I make Lux pause very briefly before "walking" out of the room. The way I do this...well, first of all, I start out by holding the "Right" butoon, but then, once I get to about here...

I'll very, very quickly let go of the button, and then, as fast as I can, I'll press it again. So basically, the timing for this trick is that you have to go very slightly slower than if you just hold down the button for the whole time...

If it sounds hard, it really isn't. I mean, it's not so easy that I can just rattle off power up after power up just like what you saw in the video, but it's easy enough that I can usually get about three of them before messing up. And this is coming from a guy who can't consistently do any of the tricks that you'll see in any given "Ocarina of Time" speed run, so don't worry about me being too L33t for you to imitate or something ;)

So, if you're new to this game, just save after you successfully perform each power up, get about six of them under your belt, and you will have this!

Around 300 Power and Guard, basically maxed out Speed and Magic, and about 450 HP (and of course, MP is irrelevant). What does that mean? Well, first of all, despite Agility supposedly capping off at 255, you can actually boost it beyond that with a B. Agility, something that no enemy in the game is able to do. And if you remember this ever handy page...

http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/SNES/7thSaga.html

Once you use that B. Agility, there is, literally, not a single enemy, in the whole game, aside from Gorsia, that will ever have more than a 30% chance of even hitting Lux at all! And even Gorsia will have, at best, only a 50% chance of hitting Lux.

Secondly, even if enemies do manage to actually hit Lux, they generally won't manage to do anything more than superficial damage. I mean, obviously Lux will be no-selling any magic attack you throw at him, and again, aside from Gorsia, very few enemies will do more than superficial damage with physical attacks.

Add all that together, and slap on 450 HP, and you've got someone so strong, that only Gorsia has any chance of killing him. And even there, Gorsia will generally need at least one critical hit...

Sooooooo...anything else? Well, I'm all tapped out on anything related to the Tune Up...but, there are some rather amusing things you can do.

Like getting stuck in walls :haw: ! Or, alternatively, you could go....

RIGHT OUTSIDE THE ROOM! WHOOOO!!! And wander a little bit from there...

You'll get to see a wide variety of other rooms scattered about what's essentially a giant, black void! And I do mean wide, because there is an absolute fun-fest of other rooms, some with color palletes that you'd NEVER otherwise see. Like these rooms!

Or these rooms, with these disgusting looking things...

Or, most interesting to me, the color pallete you see here...

Look familiar at all? Yeah, this is Lemele's throne room, so it looks like the game designers actually might've intended it to be a different color!

Well, ok, I don't know that, since I'm not well versed in the art of game design, but still, it's interesting to see all of this stuff, you know? And speaking of interesting, if you wander to the edges of the black void, you will actually get to see something you'd never normally get...

The camera actually failing to follow your character . And, if you are foolhardy enough to go even further beyond...well, one of threethings can happen. First, there's probably the most boring one of the possibilities....

Wherein you try to exit the void, and the game just blocks you. Not much to say about that obviously. But then there's the really enternaing stuff, where if you exit from the north, you can get into a wide awake nightmare of pixelated mess!

:mmmhmm:

And I think you get the general idea. And yes, you can still walk around, although, there are tons of invisible walls that appear at random here. There are some empty black squares that you can step on to, some black squares that you can't, some walls you can phase through, some you can't, and etc. A bit like Koga's Gym from Pokemon actually.

But most amusingly, at some point in this whole process, you can actually do this!

No, you are not seeing things. I am literally walking off the screen, and then walking back on it just by holding the down button! And, while the game will eventually stop you from doing this, you can circle the screen quite a few times before it does!

Now, in addition to the mess of color and tiles you see here, it's also possible to just have THIS happen when you wander off the void...

That's right, you can literally get frozen in place if you wander in the wrong place! No matter how much you try to thrash about, you won't move an inch! You'll just wiggle around like you just don't care! And if you revive your partner...

We get this silly bit of wackiness :mmmhmm:! And to be clear, Esuna's shaking isn't the game's doing, it's just me spicing it up a little :haw:!

So yes, that's about it for this episode! Sadly, I couldn't find anything else neat about this black void, other than a few more rooms that were copies of other room's we've been in before. I mean, there are stairs, but you can't really enter any of them unfortunately :( ...

Well, that's it! That's the update, and that's all the things you can do with the Tune Up Glitch! Or, at least, everything I knew how to do, though if someone knows anything else neat you can do here, feel free to tell me! Oh, and in case you're wondering, no, I'm not going to be taking advantage of this glitch for the actual playthrough. Nope, despite everything this game has put us through, we are still going to be taking on Gorsia fair and square!

So, have a nice day, and God bless you all! See ya soon!

And now, thanks to Geop, we've FINALLY gotten rid of that stupid "**** Post" Icon I accidently put on this thread! How awesome is that, huh?

Heh heh, yeah, I understand. So you probably weren't aware of all the game mechanics and all that, right? Huh...well, sorry for calling you dumb :( ...guess things seem a lot more simple and obvious when you're not the one just starting out, huh?

How dare you. I am deeply offended by a comment on the internet. I will call 911 and they will take your router and then you'll be sorry.

I remember I picked it up again years later, and beat it with Wilme and Valsu. And I also tried to find out why it was so hard, and found out about the Elnard/7th Saga difference, and that just confused me. I couldn't figure out why they thought that was a good idea. It's just so dumb. Idiotic. I mean, it's not like Wilme has a pixel penis.

That may be, but hey...at least they were honest about it?

"The only problem is you have some enemies, and I don't mean a few. I mean a whole army of these things you've never seen before ready to raise the hair on your back and take you out with one swing. This is one powerful RPG. Can you handle it?!"

Ah, Monmo...Monmo.......

Yeah, well, basically, for him, I had him drain Lux of all his MP before actually trying to damage him, that way he couldn't heal up, or steal any MP. Buffed up all my stats, threw 9 B. Fire's at him, which brought him down to something like 140-200 HP...And then I plinked him to death. With Laser1's. Very...very...very...slowly...:cripes:

Yeah, that fight literally took me something like 20-22 minutes because of that last part, even though literally ANY other combination of apprentices would've resulted in a battle that only lasts like, 10 minutes, at most. That's the biggest thing that kind of sucks about choosing Lux as your Elnard apprentice, especially if your main character happens to be Esuna or Valsu :sigh:...

Ok guys, bad news is, I don't really have an excuse for the lack of updates other than sheer laziness. But, the GOOD news is, not only am I going to complete this next update soon, BUT, I've ALSO taking Beginning Japanese! So now, I can even look at the Japanese script myself, and see at least some of the differences between what we got, and what Japan got! For example, just from next update alone, it looks like there was actually an in-game hint you were supposed to get that was left OUT of the English version. For example, in the original Japanese version...

Tafuro complains about his Mom's letter hasn't arrived from Palsu or something, a hint that maybe you should go there and see what's up. So he's not JUST talking about how he 'often thinks of his hometown of Palsu' in times of trouble.

Which makes me thing that maybe it'd be fun to do a whole separate update on how the names of the enemies and weapons in this game differ from the original version, and maybe even sperg out on some translation gaffe's that I see (well, even moreso than I've already been doing). So, that sound interesting to anyone...or should I just go ahead and beat up Gorsia :shobon: ? In any case, have a nice day all!

EDIT: And there are definitely differences in Weapon and Enemy names. For example, at least some of the Weapon names make WAY more sense in the Japanese version, and some enemy names are completely different from what they are in Japanese.

Not like text space is at a premium for this game, so weapon names would be very different.

I would enjoy seeing some of the translation errors and/or if there are any translation differences which actually modify the story. For weapon and enemy names, I'd read them if you did it, but I personally rarely pay much attention to weapon names in English so those wouldn't really matter to me one way or another, honestly.

Ok, SO! Here's the time as of last episode...

And...here's where we stopped at!

So, since we haven't talked to everyone here yet...let's get to it!

HEL...LO...

2x Scale Tetujin: Gggg...

I...AM...

...

BEING DEVELOPED. BEING DEVELOPED.

3x Tetujin Scales: MY MISSION IS TO PROTECT THE TOWN.

2x Tetujin Warriors: DO NOT LITTER. MY MISSION TO TO KEEP THE TOWN CLEAN.

A quick little aside to the "ALL CAPS" that the robot speaks in. Originally, all of the robots spoke in what we call "Katakana", a 2nd alphabet set that the Japanese language generally uses used for words that the Japanese borrowed from other cultures, like "Coffee" (or, "Koh-Hee", as they pronounce it in Japan).

One of it's other uses though, is it's use in depicting foreign accents. Basically, if you're reading a manga or whatever, and a person's dialogue is in Katakana, that generally means they either have a foreign accent or otherwise sound different than normal...

So basically, the robots talk in a very unusual way, which is most likely why the localizers went with ALL CAPS for their dialogue. Anyways, that's all the :spergin: I've got now, so let's see what the human folk have to say!

The airport is straight ahead.

This is the town of Melenam, known for great scientific technology.

Only priviliged people live in this town. It is known for its high society.

Though unfortunately, it is not known for it's longevity .

Since SARO was beaten, we must fight for ourselves.

The scientists are determined to defeat GORSIA.

Well, it IS good to know that the townspeople haven't given up. But, how will they possibly do what Saro could not?

We have an underground development lab in this town where many scientists are working on various projects.

The scientists are developing a weapon to defeat GORSIA.

Interesting, interesting. But, are the townspeople so sure that it will work?

My dad is the greatest scientist.

Relax, we have the technology of Melenam. Even GORSIA shouldn't be difficult to defeat.

Well, these two do at least, although the kid is supposed to be a lot more emphatic about it :sigh:. But anyways, we're going to want to go to the lab now, so enter the door on the far south-east side of town...

And go down a few staircases. Once you go down about 5 floors, you should end up, here.

So then, does this place look familiar? That's right, it's the same Lab we went to all the way back in Update #2, all the way back when Brantu asked us for help that one time! And my, do the colors look different or what? Anyways, though, who can we talk to here?

They are too busy and involved in their research to keep the lab clean and organized. I have tried to keep this place in order in the past. I won't be able to do that anymore, since I am leaving for Palsu to get married.

The scientists and engineers are arguing about how to develop the weapon.

Pro-tip, make it so that it's like, this rocket arm that Lux can attach to his hand, and LAUNCH at his foes any time he wants to. And hey, do we have one of those Mega Busters laying around, that way Lux can kill stuff AND learn more moves by assimilating the bio-extract of his enemies or whatever? Or heck, how about one of those Matrix disks that Lux can download into his brain, and learn like, Hop Kee Do and stuff? No? No takers? Yeesh, no wonder all you guys went extinct :reject:...

I'm not sure whether I should go along with the plan or not. In a moment of weakness, I often think about my home town, Palsu.

Just so you know, there was actually more to his message in the Japanese version. There, he actually specifically mentions that he was supposed to get a Letter from his Mom in Palsu. But since he hasn't gotten it, he wonders if it got lost or something. So yes, basically it's our hint as to what we're supposed to do next, which is why I'm really confused on why the localizers left it out. One can argue space limitations, but, looking at the text dump, there are actually places where the script is SHORTER than what was written in the Japanese version, so it certainly seems like they could have squeezed that bit in if they wanted to :psyduck:...

But whatever, off to Palsu we go!

Now then, I'm going to make a very important note here. Potion 2's are still buyable right now, but they won't be once you get past the next boss. So when you're fighting that boss, make sure to buy a full stock of Potion 2's, and whatever you do, DO NOT USE YOUR POTION 2'S TO HEAL! USE YOUR POTION 3'S INSTEAD! THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE NEXT UPDATE!! SO REMEMBER THAT!

That said, there are two new enemies here...

First, we have the Reaper, who's...

...Um...not worth talking about really. He's got Fireball, which can kind of sting a little I guess, but even that's not as powerful as what a single Spirit could do. And in terms of physical prowess, he's actually weaker than almost every single other monster, only clocking in at a mere 150 Power. Combine that with him always being alone, and you have wonder what the programmers were even thinking. Now then...

And Next is the Dogun, the brother of the Dergun (who himself was the Dragon's brain-dead cousin). Another unimpressive vanilla monster, this guy is tougher than the Dergun, but is still worth the same amount of points in EXP. In addition to that, this guy is also has an annoying 70% Vacuum resistance, and possesses the dreaded Heal3 spell. So any way you look at it, this guy is pretty irritating...

Course, that's irrelevant anyways because as usual, you should run, run, run!

If you all remember how tough these guys were, then you all should know that TWO of them is definitely an irritating group to encounter. So do yourself a favor and just run, ESPECIALLY if you haven't gotten the Tune-Up for Lux, because these guys can ORKO Lux and Esuna if you haven't.

So, here's Palsu!

Once again, you know the drill ;) !

Welcome to Palsu.

Many bright young people from this town are working in Melenam.

Many people who wish to visit Melenam are stranded here because of the monster's frequent appearance. I haven't heard from my father in Melenam, either.

I hear Melenam is more advanced than any other country.

Every young person has gone to Melenam and only old people and children are left in the town.

Hmph, well that's stupid of them! "Yeah, the place has been swarming with monsters lately, so let's just leave all the children and old people behind. THAT ought to work out well :downs: !" Anyways, here's Tafuro's Mom...

Tafuro's Mom: If you are returning to Melenam, will you take this Letter to him?

No

Tafuro's Mom: That's all right. You probably don't have time for it.

Wait, so the localizers made her say "all right" rather than "alright", and yet they STILL throw in a contraction? This writing team, my goodness :psyduck: ...

Yes

Tafuro's Mom: Thank you very much! I am sure my son will be very happy!

But hey, at least we've got an exclamation mark out of it. Two of them in fact!

Oh yeah, and we have the letter. That's cool too I guess.

Tafuro's Mom (After Getting Letter): Thank you very much. My son will be happy to hear from me.

Ok then, back to Tafuro we go!

Tafuro: There isn't much I can do to return the favor, but I thought you might be interested in our new project. Would you like to see it?

No

Tafuro: No? It would have been nice to get your opinion on it.

Yes

Tafuro (Again): Have you changed your mind?

Yes

Tafuro: Let's go to the laboratory.

Well, if you could change the "af" in your name to "og", grow about 4 feet, put on a trench coat, and start punching everything to death...that'd be pretty cool  !

And now, the moment we've all been waiting for, the moment that EVERYONE is going to want me to make jokes about. We have...the WONDER, that the localization team has chosen to grace us with. Something sooo great, that not even "M.Pison" or "Griffin" can top it. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to present...the greatest name...ever put on screen...

...Huh? I'm sorry, what was that now :allears: ?

:I lick old ladies:

Ok, let's give a bit of background on what is probably the most iconic translation blunder in the game. See, here's "Dr. Fail's" name in Japanese...

ファイル

Translating each symbol one-by-one, they come out as...

FU-A-I-RU

Now, here's how this works. Whenever "Fu" and "A" are put together, that basically means you have a "Fa" sound, with only the faintest touch of a "u" sound in there. Also, the Japanese don't have an "L" sound in their language, so they'll often use "R" in their words when they really mean "L" (hence why you'll sometimes see stuff like "Conglaturations in old NES games). So put that all together, and you get this...

"FAIRU"

So, if you completely ignore just HOW those Japanese letters are pronounced, then you can see how this name seems correct at first glance. HOWEVER, there's one important thing that the localizers forgot to take into account. See, whenever these symbols are together...

ァイ

That means the resulting sound is supposed to be pronounced as "Eye", and not the way we say the letter "A". So actually, the name ends up being more like this in practice...

"Fye-Ru"

Also, the "u" in "Ru" is generally either silent, or not very pronounced, so that makes...

"Fye-Er"

And finally, the Japanese don't have an "L" sound in Japanese, meaning that when pronouncing foreign english names or terms (like they're doing here), they'll often use an "R" instead of "L". So take all that into account, and you get this...

Fye-El (or, Dr. File)

So yes, the actual name is NOT Dr. Fail, but Dr. FILE instead. So basically, the localizers transcribed the letters, but botched the name's actual pronunciation. So what you're seeing here is amateur hour work to the highest degree, and I say that even as someone who is only in Beginning Japanese, and needs a dictionary for all but like, 5-7 verbs...

Now, that long tangent aside, we need to talk to everyone before we can talk with "Dr. Fail", so let us do that...

We don't have any time to spare, now that SARO was defeated.

I strongly object to the plan. Making a machine like that is just too dangerous!

This project is too risky.

It is the only option we have now.

If we succeed with this project, we will prove we are even more powerful than SARO.

It is still possible, considering our technological development.

Man, this is all pretty exciting. Just what exactly are they-

This isn't an ordinary TETUJIN. It can evoke the evil might of the Dark World and use that power for our purposes. We call it Foma. If you want to know more about it, ask Dr. Fail. He's in the back room.

...:stare:...oh...oh no...don't tell me...Foma?!? ALERT! CEASE! DESIST! GO NO FURTHER! TURN BACK NOW WHILE YOU STILL CAAAAAAAAN!!!

...

.......

Ok, so, remember what Cross Contaminant said so long ago? About how one of the Tetujin in Future Melenam was supposed to say something way more ominous in the Japanese version than what he said in the English version? Well, here's where that finally comes in...

Crosscontaminant posted:

In Melenam the robot just says "I MUST PRO... I MUST PRO..." in the translation, [but] in Japanese it says "FOMA... IS... FO... IS..."

It's VERY disjointed, so in the context of gameplay the player is just going to go "huh, what on earth is Foma?" rather than "what on earth happened here?", but it's a namedrop for something that only comes up much later on in the English script.

It gets mentioned again in Eygus, by the guy who recounts the story of what happened to Melenam - the English translation refers only to "weapons" whereas in Japanese he specifically mentions they angered Foma, which he describes as 大地の神 "god of the land". (This is a bit vague on my part, and possibly inaccurate; I translated the line myself out of curiosity when it first came up, but I didn't write it down.)

So basically, if we can't stop them from building Foma, these guys are as good as dead. Anyways though, after talking to everyone else, talk to Tafuro again...

And he'll lead you straight to Dr. Fail himself. So let's see what he has to say.

Dr. Fail: I'm afraid that what we are trying to accomplish is too dangerous. The Dark World should be left alone. We shouldn't touch it. We will be able to defeat GORSIA with that power, but we are not certain whether we can control it afterwards. Foma may become a worse enemy than GORSIA, so I'm thinking of terminating the project. We will just have to wait until the next SARO arrives.

Well then, good to say that Mr. Fail here is more lucid than the people who gave him his name. Although...now we're kind of out of things to do...so, let me just tell you what to do...

Walk outside and talk to this guy (and not the Scale Robot)...

Walk inside here or one of the other random doors...

And viola! You should now hear THIS theme, complete with an alarm and everything!...

Well ok, I say "alarm", but really it's more like someone tooting through one of those old speakers that people used to hook up to their computers. Anyways though, for all you 7th Saga veterans watching this, no, you do NOT have to get a random encounter and defeat the enemies. No, you can move on just by following the exact steps you saw up there. Neat eh? Now, what's all the hubbub about anyways?

Attention! Alert! Foma started moving! It's out of control!

This is literally the only non-robot guy still running around up top, with all the rest of the civilians mysteriously disappearing. And if you go to Palsu, you'll find that almost everyone has disappeared from THERE as well! Why that is...well, you got me on that one, but who can we talk to in the lab?

Something trigger Foma. It's out of control! We shouldn't have dealt with the power of darkness...

Foma is blocking our way to the lab, and the scientists are still inside.

Tafuro: Foma is draining the energy sources of Melenam. We can't even fly the AIRSHIP! Soon, Foma will be able to destroy the entire planet! We must stop Foma before it's too late!

That's kind of an overstatement. After all, we weren't there to stop Foma before, when all this time loop stuff started, and yet the world hasn't burned to the ground or anything. But, that's no reason not to nip this thing in the bud, so just go into the same room that Tafuro took you to before, and let's get started!

Ok, so once again, I'll give you a reminder. DO NOT USE YOUR POTION 2'S TO HEAL! USE YOUR POTION 3'S INSTEAD! THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR THIS NEXT PART!! AGAIN, THAT IS IMPORTANT!

Now then, I believe you all know the routine.

Yep, just get all the buffs on Lux, and let Esuna die. Once all the buffs are up, she's not going to be able to actual damage Foma, and even at full health, the girl can get one-shotted by Foma's magic attacks, so why bother? Speaking of which...

This here is by far his most dangerous attack, capable of dealing upwards of 208 Damage to Lux, 265 Damage to Wilme, and 229 Damage to every other apprentice Elnard partner. And while all of those statistics assume that your partner only has about 87.5% of whatever Magic they usually have, the point is, this attack is dangerous! So unless you've got the damage formulas on hand, you'd best not let your HP drop below those amounts!

That said though, we still have 9 Potion 3's available to heal every bit of damage we take, so this should still be pretty simple. Plus, that Thunder2 attack is really all Foma's got. Take that away...

And all Foma's really doing is either plinking you with pathetically weak physical attacks...

Or wasting turn taking away MP you don't really need anyways. Plus, assuming you use Defend-Attack...

You can take off a pretty big chunk of HP per hit, even without critical hits. In fact, just this blow right here is worth about 22% of his health, so while Foma can dish it out, it has virtually no chance of actually being able to outlast you.

So then, mission accomplished! But did we actually manage to save Melenam?

Did we?!?

No, no we did not...BUT, as it later turns out...

We're all still alive! Hurray! Now, what does Mr. Fail have to say for himself?

Dr. Fail: We avoided making a horrible mistake. Thank you...

:psyduck:

Dr. Fail: We ended up losing our continent, but it's a small price to pay compared to the whole planet.

Yeah man, almost all of the continent's people dying overnight? Including Tafuro's mom? Eh, small price to pay. I mean this whole thing is pretty much all YOUR fault to begin with, but, hey, no sense in beating yourself up over it, am I right :downs: ?

Really though, in what world can you possibly say that you've "avoided" making a mistake here? Seems to me that the damage has kind of been done! It's like watching Breaking Bad all over again, and listening to Walter White talk about how a planeful of people crashing isn't that bad in the grand scheme of things. Unless...

All is well in the end. If we had stayed in Melenam, we would have made more TETUJIN like Foma.

All residents have been evacuated from the continent by the AIRSHIP. I'm sure they are now in search of a new homeland.

Oh...well ok then, that explains that. Course, now that brings up a whole nother problem in just how these guys managed to literally rescue EVERYONE on the continent in such a short amount of time. Not only that, but, if you actually search the Airship, you will not find even half of the people that you could talk to in Palsu and Melenam. Unless of course, there was another Airship lying around? If so, ok, but we only ever saw one Airship...

So none of that really makes a ton of sense. And to make matters worse, we've got these bits of info...

We made an emergency landing on the Barluca continent because of engine trouble.

I know GORSIA is on the Barluca continent.

There is a woman who claims she can communicate with SARO.

I can feel the presence of SARO. He is somewhere on the continent. His force is becoming weaker. We must hurry.

We must find SARO. Can we count on your help, too? We've already sent TETUJIN to search for him.

That's right. It hasn't even been two updates, and already we're at the endgame. And aside from beating Foma, we haven't really even done anything interesting. We've just been going from place to place, occasionally talking to random people, and generally just doing what we've always done...

So here's what my complaining boils down to. Basically, it seems to me that the endgame was kind of rushed. Or at the very least, there was a lot of cut content that was supposed to be here, but didn't make it in before the deadline came. I mean, think about it...we've got...

quote:

1) That titanic exposition dump from the Sage in the last episode.

2) We've got this fairly major arc that was foreshadowed from the very beginning, and involves the destruction of an entire continent. And yet, it literally consists only of around a page of text, and a bossfight. Oh, and you get to deliver an old lady's letter. Oooooooooooo...

3) Lack of B. Protects, which makes me think that they either didn't play-test this part of the game very thoroughly, or they had some other mechanics planned out, like maybe the rest of the apprentices coming back in time, or maybe some extra towns that could've had some more B. Protects.

4) Just like in Dragon Warrior III, this last stretch of the game puts us in a completely different world than what we're used to. And yet, UNLIKE Dragon Warrior III, the world itself does not change in any appreciable way. Really, this world should look absolutely TRASHED. I mean, it hasn't had 5000 years to recover in this time period, so why not change the landscape to reflect that? At the very least, make the sky a different color in the battle screen, or make it look like it's covered in debris. And maybe make the craters larger and more detailed than they were in the past, you know?

None of these except number 3 are THAT offensive on their own, but when you put them all together, it certainly doesn't seem as though the game's going out with a bang...

Speaking of which, I'm going to cut this update right here. I mean, I know not a lot has really happened, and I haven't really told you anything that interesting in terms of strategy, but, I promise that NEXT update will be where the difficulty not only ramps up, but actually hits it's peak.

That's right, not even the Dunes of Despair can compare to what's next. The difficulty here is so high, that even our patented "run from everything" strategy isn't going to cut it! It is so high, that even the BOSSES are going to be a bit of a challenge! It is so high, that our entire strategy for the final dungeon literally revolves around us not getting a single encounter before fighting Gorsia! So this next update? This coming update here is the sole reason why I have been saving all of the Recoveries I've been collecting over the course of the game, and one of the main reasons why Brains are so good to grind against in the early game...

So, will we be able to defeat Gorsia? Will we be able to save Saro, before he gets shuffled off the mortal coil? Will this part of the game be anymore fully baked than the rest of the Past? And just how in the world do I plan on beating this thing anyways?! Find out, NEXT TIME, on the true finale of "Let's Play The 7th Saga"!

I'll be honest, I actually like the name Dr. Fail a lot more than Dr. File. Just seems thematically appropriate for a non-player scientist in an RPG, given that approximately 95% of them are utterly useless and/or have zero common sense.

The other 5% are hyper-competent techno-wizards which make your Legendary Hero, world-saving main character seem like kind of a chump.

...Ah, blast it! I forgot one VERY important note :reject:...

DO NOT USE YOUR POTION 2'S TO HEAL AGAINST FOMA! USE YOUR POTION 3'S INSTEAD! THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT FOR THIS NEXT PART!!

The 7th Saga Finale: "Time After Time", Part 1/2

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the TRUE Finale of Let's Play the 7th Saga! And, just so you know, I WAS originally going to kill Gorsia in this update, and I actually have all of THAT material almost finished...but this update ended up being much longer than I expected it to be, so I decided to only post this part for today. But tomorrow, I'll be able to post the 2nd half, so yeah. You all are essentially getting a double program! And that's pretty cool, eh ;)?

So here's our time...

Now let's get started!

Yep, still stuck with the terrible map for this :sigh:...

So, here's the good news. The good news is that this Airship now has a House of Healing and an Inn ready to meet your needs, and ALSO allows you to buy weapons, armor, and items. Plus, it even has a hidden Agility Seed that wasn't on it before! And while I don't bother to pick it up at this point (just because I don't think it gives enough of a boost to justify the time lost getting it), it's still there for if you want a quick boost. So that's pretty nice.

The BAD news though, is that this Airship is the last place you will EVER find any weapon, armor, or item merchants. And what's more, the item merchant here doesn't have any Potion 2's, nor will they be found anywhere else, hence why I told you to save them. Now then, here's a legend for finding everything on this ship...

1) Entrance/Exit
2) Inn
3) Item Shop
4) Weapon Shop
5) House of Healing
6) Empty Room (formerly had Ruby before Fleeing Melenam)
7) Pilot and Dr. Fail
8) Hidden Agility Seed.

So then, with that out of the way, let's head out.

Now then, this is the path we need to take for this part of the update. Head over to this town to rest up and save, then raid the Barrier Cave so that we can maybe find Saro.

I do want to make a disclaimer before we get too far into the update though. You see, I...might have accidentally messed up a bit on that one update where we were choosing which Apprentice to make our Elnard partner. Because while I did make a point of saying that Kamil and Olvan were the weakest you could get while still being viable...I really don't think I did of good job of saying just HOW weak they were.

So let's be clear here. This here is where Elnard Kamil and Olvan REALLY start to suffer because of their low speed, to the point where they are only barely viable for the endgame, and even then, only if your PC has either healing magic or F.Shid. So if your PC does not have that kind of support magic, then you are NOT going to have an easy time of it, especially against Gorsia himself.

In fact, I'm going to update that one particular mini-update later to reflect that, but for now, just know that every strategy that is going to be listed from here on out is a strategy that only, ONLY works for Elnard Lux, Wilme, and Lejes, because of their high Speed. And as for Elnard Kamil and Olvan, I'm going to have to make a separate update covering them.

Anyways though, let's just move on to the monsters already, shall we?

Well, what do you know, a warm welcome from an old friend. Then there's the Crab, pictured on the left! He's got some decent Power, but, his spells suck, and he's only got 140 Speed, so...

Just run from the guy, and don't even bother with a B. Agility, because this guy is VERY easy to get away from :).

Next up, we have the Serpint. She's got decent Speed, but, she's got one eensy little problem...

See, she's got this rather unfortunate habit of turning herself to stone on us...so yeah, that nukes her difficulty somewhat :keke:. So again, no B. Agility needed for running.

Now here's the most annoying enemy of the update. This dude's the K.Night, and unlike everyone else, his Speed actually breaks the 200 mark, so there's NO chance of you running from him!

And once again, it turns out I made another big mistake earlier on in this playthrough :sigh:. It seems I sold the Ice Cloak, which would have really helped Esuna here since this guy has this...

As well as Blizzard2, so you can't really guarantee that Esuna will actually survive. So, instead, rather than having Lux go first to see if Esuna would get hit or not, I simply had her use a B. Agility on Lux, and hoped that she wouldn't die. After that, my strategy was to put Power on Lux before having him pound away at the K. Night with regular attacks. Like so...

There IS a chance that the K.Night won't be killed by only two hits, but, even if you don't quite get him, he's just going to waste a turn with Heal 2 anyways, which won't be enough to survive a third hit. Not from Lux anyways.

One other thing though, while the K.Night's physical hits are fairly weak (even WITHOUT Defense 1 on Lux), his magic attacks can still do a bit of damage even to Lux, despite how much bulkier he is than Esuna. This isn't TOO big of a deal right now, but later, you might fight TWO of them, so they can get annoying real quickly :reject:!

Now, as for the final enemy we can encounter here...

It's yet ANOTHER old friend! Dude's got 160 Speed, so if you happen to be Lux, Lejes, or Wilme, you can just run from him as well. If NOT however, you're probably better off just killing him with B. Power + Defend-Attack + Defense 1 (if you happen to have access to that spell).

So that's all there is to it in regards to them. Basically, with the exception of the K.Night, the monsters around "Haven" are the weakest out of all the enemies on this continent, so you really don't want to waste your B. Agilities, B. Protects, or M. Waters on them. No sense wasting valuable items on scrubs after all!

Plus, the town of Haven isn't THAT far off, so even if Esuna dies, you'll likely be able to make it there and revive her at it's House of Healing before you ever need to resort to an M. Water...And speaking of Haven, here we are!

Now, the reason I consider the "House of Important NPC's" important is because we're going to get some key items later on, but for now, it's just got two NPC's. So let's just talk to everyone, shall we?

We are the humble servants of SARO. When GORSIA reappeared, SARO told us to stay here and left for Gorfun.

I no longer feel SARO's life force. GORSIA indeed might have won.

It appears that GORSIA is getting increasingly stronger. We may not be able to defeat him at this point.

SARO must have known that he wouldn't win this time. That's why he went alone.

SARO once defeated GORSIA using the Runes and he sealed off GORSIA'S dark power in them. However, when GORSIA returned to this world, he cursed the Runes so that SARO couldn't use them against him. SARO had to fight GORSIA with his bare hands.

It may be impossible to defeat GORSIA without the power of the Runes.

I feel SARO's force, though it is feeble. It's coming from the West. We must save him!

So there's your mission, if you choose to accept it. So before you go there, save and rest up, equip the Fire Cloak to your weaker partner if you can, and go to the cave directly west of this town. And once you're there, you will find...

Another one of those blue cavern maps, kind of like what was in Gariso's castle. But unlike Gariso's castle, we seem to have some busted up Tetujin laying around. So what's going on exactly?

SARO MIGHT BE IN THE BACK ROOM.

GORSIA'S SPELL IS WEAKENING US.

THE ENERGY HAS BEEN DRAINED FROM MY BODY. BZZZZ... ...

Hmm, so these'd be the guys sent by the Melenamians to rescue Saro. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be doing so good :ohdear:...

But, it is what it is. I guess the one upside to this is that the 2nd and 3rd robots act as rather useful landmarks for when the path splits, with the 3rd one being found directly on the correct pathway, and the 2nd being located right where the path branches off. So that's kind of nice I guess.

As for what dinged them up...well, they SAY Gorsia's spell is throwing them off, but if you ask me...

It probably has more to do with monsters like THIS guy! So ok, this dude is called an S. Demon, and fortunately, there's only one of these guys here, so the solution is very simple.

Use Defend with your Elnard partner, and then, if the S. Demon attacks Lux, have Esuna cast Power on Lux. If not have Esuna use Defense 1 on herself, and that should allow her to survive any S. Demon attack, magic or otherwise.

Especially if the poor sap is too stupid to actually USE an attack :haw:. But either way...

One single Defend-Attack should be enough to destroy the S. Demon as long as you have Power on you Elnard partner, so long as he's at least SOME kind of physical fighter. However, from here on out, most of these strategies are really only viable for Lux, Wilme, and Lejes, who actually have decent Speed, so keep that in mind as we move on to fight...THREE S. Demons!

Oh yeah, this is where things can start to get difficult, because these guys...

These can hit HARD! And granted, that 188 Damage physical was against a Lux without Defense 1 on him, but, point is, these guys WILL lay on one heck of a hurtin' if you try to fight them. And they're all pretty fast as well! So you'll want to...

Use Esuna to immediately boost Lux's Agility on the very first turn...

Hope that she doesn't die like she did here :( ...

And RUUUUN!!! And yeah, you CAN defeat this group if you really want to, but, even if you don't die trying (a task that is made doubly hard by them bringing their buds back to life with Revive 1), they're sure to cost you a lot of items if you try that. So it's totally not worth it if you ask me. So then, here's the next enemy...

The Undeed! Yep, pretty lame name they got there, and they're not even that bad if you're Elnard partner is someone with any kind of speed, like Lux or Wilme. Simply have Lux boost his agility with a B. Agility, and have Esuna boost herself with Defense 1 to give herself maximum survival odds. Then run!

I mean, these Undeed's can tear up the Elnard partner, sure, but they're also slow enough that they likely wouldn't even be able to hit him that often, not to mention the fact that they sometimes waste turns using MPCatcher, so fast apprentices will still have a good chance of living through the round...

So, the S. Demons and Undeeds can generally be dealt with without too much trouble. But unfortunately, you can also find...

THESE guys here! And when I mentioned that they could be extremely annoying later on...

This is what I meant. Yes, not only can they can shot Esuna if she's not wearing the Ice Cloak (which I sold for some reason), but they can also do a lot of damage very quickly to Lux if they decide to spam their magic attacks.

So, I generally just let Esuna die, and get all the buffs up on Lux. Then...

Hope that I don't have to use too many Potion 3's I guess :sigh:. Also, don't try to use Defend-Attacks this time, Lux already has a hard enough time hitting these guys to begin with.

And if all that isn't annoying enough as it is, these guys can ALSO cast Defense 1 on themselves. Fortunately, they don't seem to do this too often for some reason, but when they do...hoooooo boy...

But eventually, you should be able to vanquish them. It may not be quick, but it'll get done. Speaking of which...

Here's a boss! Hopefully you won't have revived Esuna before getting to him, because she's definitely going to die here. But if you thought you were going to get a random encounter, and revived her to help you survive it, that's all good. Because at this point, the random encounters are what are REALLY going to kill you, so, anyways, here's Goron...

Hmm...so it's a Romus recolor eh? In any case...

The strategy is the same as always. Buff up Lux and let Esuna die. Also, here's where I introduce you to something that you really need to pay attention to for the endgame.

See this? Blizzard 2? Well, this is Goron's only spell, it costs him 32 MP to use, and Goron only has 220 MP himself. So what this means is that he can cast it five more times before running out of MP. And when THAT happens, we can revive Esuna, have HER heal Lux rather than waste healing items, and even use her to tank some blows for him. And sure, you may have to use an occasional M.Herb2 to keep her MP up, but, that's hardly any skin off YOUR nose ;)!

So until then, try to stick to Potion 2's, and have Lux go mano a mano with Goron until Goron runs out of MP. THEN revive Esuna, buff her Defense, have her heal up Lux's booboos, and you should mop him up in not time!

So, that's all there is to that...

So, down to the next floor we go then! And here's a tip for getting through this second floor without encountering any enemies...

See, you don't actually have to walk very far to get where you need to go, and the path is very simple, as it basically just goes up and to the left. So if you go down these steps, and you end up with the enemies positioned like this...

I would keep entering and exiting this room until you have something that looks more like this...

Sometimes it may take a minute, BUT, if you DO decide to do it, and things go off without a hitch, you can really make things a lot easier on yourself, so I think it's worth it. But was Goron really the only one preventing us from getting Saro?

Nope. No he was not.

Griffan: If you wish to go forward, you must first defeat me.

Minor thing of note, this English text is actually very different from the Japanese text. In fact, Griffan and Goron don't even TALK in the Japanese version! The game literally just says something like "A monster appears from the darkness to attack you", and that's it. Whether that's an improvement or an unnecessary 4Kids-esque ad-lib, I do not know...

That aside though, Griffan is yet another simple battle. In fact, despite having slightly higher stats, Griffan is actually easier than Goron! Because while Goron will always swing for the fences, Griffan will waste valuable MP doing stupid stuff like this...

It's almost comedic to think of just how much of a non-issue Vacuum 2 and Petrify are to us, isn't it? The way you can carry around 9 Mirrors and Harps at a time, these bosses are basically giving us a free turn every time they try to use those spells! And because Vacuum 2 costs 60 MP, Griffan is practically hemorrhaging MP for most of the fight. So that's pretty neat :P.

BUT, make no mistake, Griffan's also got Blizzard 2, and that still hurts a lot, so she's not a complete pushover either. Nevertheless, she ALSO only 220 MP, and with her spending 60 MP per pop on Vacuum 2, she goes through that pretty quickly.

That being said though, I had basically almost killed her by the time she was finished casting stuff...

So I didn't even NEED to use an M. Water there! Pretty good on me, eh?

Heck, I even got a level up out of it too!

So yeah, the challenge with these two mini-bosses isn't so much that they are actually hard in and of themselves. No, the trouble is that for the very first time, the game forces you to fight them one after another, WITHOUT giving you a chance to rest and stock up. What's more, while you CAN go back to the Airship to get more items once you beat these two, that is an option that is extremely time consuming, so if possible, I prefer to just do all of these guys AND the final boss all in one shot...

This, as you can imagine, can get very complicated when you're ALSO having to deal with enemies who can destroy you with one hand tied behind their back if you're not careful, so THAT'S why it's so important to keep an eye on Goron and Griffan's MP. Because why waste Potions when you could potentially have Esuna heal you instead, right?

Anyways, we've now beaten both of this dungeon's bosses, so just go north a little bit north and you should find Saro!

Who, apparently, is a recolored Lemele...and he's sitting on an invisible throne...so yeah, don't know what the deal is there. But anyways, can we save him? Let's find out.

SARO: GORSIA took all of my power away from me. Now, I can hardly feel the sunlight on my body.

Mmm. I don't suppose that it's because you're in a cave :P?

SARO: I no longer have the power to protect the people, but I removed GORSIA's curse on the Runes. When you use the Runes, they should give you enough power to fight GORSIA. Lux, I have to leave the rest to you. Fight GORSIA and win for the people! I'm growing weaker as I speak. Don't worry about me, though. My flesh will perish, but I will be reborn to a new life.

And away he goes...it's too bad we couldn't save him, especially since the game designers could have made him a REALLY effective crutch character.

I mean, wouldn't it have actually been kind of cool if we could have someone like him in our party, and have him know Defense 1, Agility, Heal 3, and all that good stuff? That way, no matter HOW poorly balanced your party was when they came into the Past, you wouldn't be able to completely shoot yourself in the foot due to a lack of B. Defense's and stuff.

And if the game designers are worried that he'd make the endgame too simple, just give him some mediocre stats and say "Hey, the dude just got almost all his power taken away by Gorsia! Of course he's not at 100%!", or something like that. That way you can give him that awesome spell selection without making him too overpowered...

But whatever. We're kind of done here, so you CAN use an Exigate, and try to walk back to the village without dying...

But I personally prefer to just let myself die, at least if I've got more than 1400 Gold or so.

I mean, it doesn't take much to revive your dead partner, so why not?

So now that we've seen Saro die, all of his servants have gone into this house...

And are now standing in dramatic formation! So let's see what they have to say!

We felt the moment of his death. When he died, his soul touched the Runes and removed GORSIA's curse. He must have known your power is the last hope. Please take the Runes and answer his call.

What, we get the Runes back?! WAA-HOO!! YES PLEASE! GIVE ME MY RUNES BACK RIGHT NOW!!

The Wizard Rune will block GORSIA's power for a short period, and he will appear from the shadows of the Dark World.

YEAH, AWESOOOME!!!...except, wait, hold on...

The Moon Rune will weaken GORSIA and reduce his Attack Power by half.

The Sky Rune will weaken GORSIA's Magic Power. Esuna, I'll hope for your success.

The Wind Rune will reduce GORSIA's agility. Esuna, good luck!.

The Star Rune will reduce GORSIA's Defense Power by half.

:sigh:...ok, so here's the deal. We do get our Runes back...but we don't REALLY get them back, if you know what I mean. See, all they do is lower Gorsia's stats, and that's it. They don't actually do anything to make US stronger anymore.

So instead of being a free source of healing and stat buffs, they now only work as debuffs on one specific monster...and that's it. Kind of sucks, but, what can you do? I just blame the game designers for not doing enough to make up for their loss :( ...

Using the Light Rune, you should be able to deflect his spells and attack him. There isn't much we can do to help you, but we will be looking forward to the good news.

Now, here's something that's REALLY frustrating. First of all, the idea that the Light Rune can actually deflect Gorsia's spells is outright false. Instead, what it actually does is dispel Gorsia's invulnerability...or at least, it CAN do that, IF you've used the WIZARD Rune first! Because you see, the Wizard Rune doesn't JUST make Gorsia visible, but it ALSO makes it so that he can actually be AFFECTED by the Light Rune in the first place, which absolutely needs to land, otherwise, none of the other five Runes will actually WORK on Gorsia at all!! So why, OH WHY, is the game not more clear about this :argh: ?!?

Secondly, and this one is a little more minor, but...

Using the Water Rune, you can reduce GORSIA's dark power by half.

I don't know what the Water Rune sage means by reducing Gorsia's "dark power" by half. Actually, it just reduces his HP by half, so it's not like there's some sort of super powerful "Dark type" magic that only Gorsia can use (as awesome as that would be). I mean, I guess this last one is probably kind of obvious given what we'd been using the Water Rune for before Gorsia stole it from us, but it's still pretty terrible that the game isn't more clear with us on what the Runes do, isn't it?

SO, with the Runes now acquired, can we now finally march onto Gorsia's castle and confront him? Can we put an end to Gorsia once and for all? Or will this foul cretin cheat death once again? Find out, next time, on the next exciting part of the Finale! This is Fionordequester, signing out. Have a nice night everyone :) !

Actually, I respectfully disagree with you there. For as obviously flawed as this game is, there ARE a lot of really good things about it. The presentation and atmosphere, for example, are the most immediate things. No other Yu-Gi-Oh game goes out of the way to really make
Sigh, sorry guys :sigh:. I WAS going to have it up today, but, then I started having these computer issues, and the GIMP painting tool isn't working for me right now. Dunno how I'll solve that, but for now, let's postpone it to tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience!

You're already dead
I don't think Lemele's quest is worth the effort.

I'm just happy that it looks like this LP will finish. I forgot about how BS the endgame was.
Due to all of the other weird programming bits, I wonder if you can instantly win if you use the whistle on Goron.

Alright then, let us forge onward to Gorsia's castle, and END this destructive conflict once and for all! Also...

See this point right here? Well, up until this point, you're still going to be fighting the (relatively) weak enemy encounters that we fought at the beginning of this update, with Ghouls and Crabs and all that. However, the moment you go PAST it...

You'll start getting some tougher encounters instead, though they're still not as deadly as what you fought in the Sealing Cave. This is because instead of fighting a max of THREE S. Demons at once, you'll now only fight two of them at once. Plus, there's no Undeeds to deal with, and you'll still run into some weaker monsters like the F. Witch or Serpint.

That said though, just like in that one bonus update on the Dunes of Despair? Well, just like in that update, I would suggest purposefully getting at least one random encounter on this spot if you're finding too many white dots on the right side.

Also, no, it's not a good idea to wait on the spot above this one. The reason I say that is because while that one is technically closer to Gorsia's castle, the game seems to spawn way more enemies to the right if you get an encounter on that spot rather than on this spot. I don't know why this is, but, that's just the way it goes I guess.

So anyways, here we are!

The final dungeon! Yes, it's um...well, it's definitely interesting, to say the least. First of all, before we get too far, we've got some more Tetujin to talk to, so let's see what they have to say.

THE STRANGE STRUCTURE OF THIS BUILDING CONFUSES OUR SENSES.

LEAVE ME HERE TO MARK THE SECOND FLOOR, THEN GO LOOK FOR THE STAIRS TO THE NEXT FLOOR.

GGGGG...

Ah yes. See, this final dungeon actually has sort of a gimmick to it, in that each room will have passages in all four corners of the room. But, aside from Floor 1, each floor will have only ONE passage that will lead you the right way, with the rest either looping back to the same room you tried to exit, or leading to a previous floor. So for example, on Floor 4, the northeast and southeast passages will lead you all the way back to Floor 1, while the northwest passage will lead you all the way back to Floor 2. And on Floor 1, the corner passages on the left will both lead you to Floor 2, but the corner passages on the right will simply lead you in a circle.

Pretty interesting gimmick I would say, however, due to the sheer number of passages you can enter, and how close they all are to each other, this makes it EXTREMELY easy for you to get all the way to Gorsia without fighting a single encounter. Not that you would WANT to get any encounters, because...

Because these guys hurt.

A LOT!! I mean, I'll still do the full analysis, but do I even NEED to when they're putting out numbers like THIS?!? Anyways...

First up is the Falock (or "Face Rock" as they're referred to in Japan).

I don't suppose it would surprise you if I said that they had 60 more points of Power and 120 more points Guard than the boss we just fought a few minutes ago, would it? And I suppose it also wouldn't surprise you if I said that these guys are the weakest enemies you can fight here? So yes, if you get three enemies here, you can end up fighting what now amounts to THREE bosses! ALL AT THE SAME TIME !!

But back to the Falocks, there is one fortunate thing about them...

And that's that they only have 120 Speed, making them EASILY the slowest monster you will ever fight in the Past. As a result, running from them is easy as pie, even WITHOUT a B. Agility! But if you actually try to fight them, they may just start raising their Agility...

Like so. Pretty silly animation, but you definitely don't want to be joking around here. Now then, next we have...

The F. Night who, funnily enough, was actually called "Flame" in Elnard. So while "Flame" is what we call the weakest of these guys in our version, "Flame" is what we call the STRONGEST of these guys in Elnard!

Anyways though, as that last pic of him showed us, the guy hits like a freight train. I mean, that was a critical hit that was shown, but I'm sure you get the point! Plus, he's got an 80% resistance to Vacuum and Debuff spells, so you're not going to be able to cheese him that way. And as for magic...well, actually, he's got Fireball and Fire 2, but his Magic isn't that great. Still, you definitely don't want to fight them either...

Which is why it's good that they only have 150 Speed! So whilethey aren't as sluggish as the Falock's, they are still pretty simple to run from once you pump up your Speed. This next guy however...

This guy is the Death Knight, and hoo boy does he earn that title. Not only that, but he is also the one single enemy with THE most insane localization buffs. I mean, in Elnard, he wasn't so bad. He had Heal 3, sure, but he also had only 270 HP, 240 Power, and 500 Guard. So he was pretty good, but he wasn't someone who would just kill you with one flick of the wrist.

But the 7th Saga D.Night? This dude has 600 HP, 400 Power, and 650 Guard. Yes, you heard me right. The guy actually got a 160 Point boost in our version! For an idea of how ridiculous this is, fricken GORSIA only has 300 Power once you use the Moon Rune on him...

So yes, one lone D. Knight can actually hit harder than the final boss!! In fact, so can the F. Night, who has 340 Power! And even the Plater has 300 Power, so yes, literally every enemy here can hit as hard, or AS hard, as Gorsia himself :cripes:!

But back to the D. Night, what makes him REALLY bad is that he also has 190 Speed, so even RUNNING isn't a reliable strategy! And to top it all off...the D. Nights also have THIS ability...

But if you STILL want to try and take the D. Nights, well...you CAN do it, as you do have this one advantage.

For as strong as they are, they also have a lot of useless spells that they'll waste time casting, like Petrify and MPCatcher, so if you're lucky, you should get enough of a breather to go on the offensive once in a while...

Still though, trying to beat the random encounters here while STILL having enough items to defeat Gorsia? You have about as much of a chance doing that as a one-legged man does at winning a butt-kicking contest, so do yourself a favor, and just avoid everything, ok?

In fact, I honestly wonder if that's what the game designers INTENDED for you to do in this dungeon. I mean, think about it, if you're a game designer, and you know that a savvy player can easily bypass every single encounter in the dungeon...how would YOU get around that, without actually changing the dungeon itself? In that case, why NOT make all the enemies ridiculous? That way, it makes the dungeon into a rather nifty puzzle dungeon rather than just a poorly designed one, like it was in Elnard.

Either way though, I actually kind of like this dungeon just because the game designers kind of forced you to think creatively by doing this. Now whether or not that was INTENTIONAL or not, I do not know...but still.

That said though, here's the end. Gorsia is behind here! Before you do that though, here's a look at my items...

I actually got really lucky on my M. Waters here, which is good, because they play a vital role in any fight with Gorsia. So then, are you ready? Ready to go face-to-face with Gorsia himself?! Well then...bottoms up!

GORSIA: You should have stayed in the future. If you had, you would have known me there as the one power on this planet. Ha ha ha! Go to the Dark World!

...Wow Gorsia. At this rate, you might just as well tell us to "go to the Shadow Realm"! I mean, 4Kids taint aside, at least THAT name has something of a poetic quality to it :keke:...

Anyways, as I mentioned earlier, Gorsia is kind of invincible at the moment. But before we start fixing that...

We'll want to start off by having Esuna use Defense 1 on Lux. And...

Shoot. That's not good. Gorsia didn't attack Esuna, which means that if he casts a multi-targetting spell, he'll probably OHKO her and badly damage Lux, forcing Lux to heal. And if Lux is forced to heal, that could mean Gorsia could just keep whaling on Lux until either you run out of Potions, or until Gorsia scores a critical hit with a physical attack...

That scenario, btw, is also why I put Defense 1 on Lux immediately. You see, Gorsia starts out with 600 points of Power. And if you want an idea of how big THAT amount is, even Lux and Wilme, at Level 79, WITH Elnard boosts can't reach that amount! Not without some really lucky level ups anyways!

Anyways, nothing to be done about it now. Let's just use the Wizard Rune and see what he looks like!

Huh. Well now, that's an interesting design. For some reason he's all chained up...and it looks like he has the same hairstyle as Lemele and Saro. So, the way he talked about disposing of Lemele, I had assumed he just killed him, then polymorphed into his body, but...could it be that he actually invaded his body, possessed him, then twisted his body into that of a monster? Hence why he's all chained up and stuff? To show that Lemele is, symbolically, a prisoner in his own body?

Oh, wait, what's he doing, what's he...

Oh phew! Thank goodness! It WASN'T a multi-target attack! WAAAHOOOO!!!

Still, that really hurt...And if that doesn't seem that bad, keep in mind that Kamil, and Lejes usually only have around 200-220 HP around this, have the same Magic growth as Lux, AND don't get access to the Tune-Up upgrade like Lux does. So yes, at full power, Gorsia can literally ONE-SHOT Kamil and Lejes if they don't have F. Shid up (which fortunately, Lejes does have).

And that's not even one of the high damage rolls! When Gorsia really gets lucky, his Fire 2 and Ice 2 can actually go as high as 280+ Damage, meaning that Olvan isn't safe from getting OHKOed either! So what, that's like HALF of the main characters that can get OHKOed by magic?

Oh, but it gets better. Because as I alluded to, his physical attacks? Well, just watch...

...oh yeah...you just saw that. And unlike the F.Night, that wasn't even a critical hit we just saw! Yes, Gorsia's Power is so high, that if he gets a critical, he can actually do quadruple digit damage :stare:!!!

Anyways though, for now, both of our characters have survived the round, so what do we do next? Well...

Unfortunately, Esuna has to use her turn restoring Lux, lest he falls because of an ill-timed multi-target attack. Speaking of which...

Just look at Gorsia go! Had I not used Heal 3 right there, that would have been the end of me! But instead...

I simply pass the turn by reviving Esuna. After all, she's got Heal 3! And considering we've got 6 more Runes to use, well, two people can definitely go through them much faster than just one can!

Speaking of which, now that we've used the Light Rune, we can FINALLY start nerfing some of Gorsia's insane stats! But will he put a stop to my plans before I even get to see them through?

Nope, because once again, he is also loaded down by the Petrify and Vacuum spells, so he'll also spend some turns doing useless nonsense, like any good boss in this game :cheeky: !

So then, we don't want Gorsia critting our guys to death, so...

Bye bye Attack Power! Now it's just 300 :haw: !

I mean, that's still enough to OHKO Esuna, but never fear!

The ever handy M. Water is here! And since Gorsia starts off with a hefty 250 Speed compared to Lux's 169...

More M. Water shenanigans ensue as the Wind Rune shaves 50 Speed off Gorsia. Slap a B. Agility to Lux's Speed by 30, and now Lux and Gorsia are almost equal! And what's more...

Lux gets the chance to move before Gorsia can kill Esuna, so...

Now we can kill Gorsia's Magic as well :haw: !

Also, Gorsia decides to waste his turn once again...

So after that, we cut Gorsia's HP in half with the Water Rune, buff up Lux's Power, then finish things off by cutting Gorsia's Guard in half with the Star Rune! So now that we've used all the Runes AND buffed Lux's stats as high as we can, you'd think this fight would be over, right?

Wrong. Because for as much as we've weakened him, Gorsia is STILL tough enough to potentially outlast us if Lux tries to take him mano-a-mano. And while the obvious solution is to have Esuna act as Lux's White Mage...

Gorsia can still kill Esuna with one lucky Magic attack. And obviously we can't just keep spamming M. Waters ad nauseum, so the only way to ensure Esuna's survival is to let Gorsia waste all his MP, THEN revive Esuna, get Defense 1 on her...

And have her tank some of Gorsia's physical attacks as she keeps the two of us healed up. In fact, even if you don't have a PC with healing spells, they should still be useful as damage soakers as long as you put Defense 1 on them...

So then, Gorsia has 255 MP, and he just used Fireball here, which is a 32 MP spell. And before that, he used Fire 2 (12 MP), Fireball (32 MP), Petrify (10 MP), Vacuum (30 MP), another Petrify (which he did off-screen), another Fire 2 (also done off-screen), and Blizzard 2 (32 MP). So, combined with the Fireball he just did here, he's already used 190 of that MP, so he has 53 more MP to burn.

Now then, post-Sky Rune, Gorsia can still do upwards of 230 Damage to Lux with his Magic attacks, so unless you have F. Shid (which only Valsu and Lejes have), the best you can do before Gorsia runs out of MP is keep spamming Potion 2 or 3's, and hope you can get in the occasional Defend-Attack. And no, regular Attacks don't do jack to Gorsia, so don't even try it.

Now then! With Vacuum and Fireball here, Gorsia only has 18 MP, so can we safely bring Esuna back?

Nope! Because in addition to Fireball 2 and Blizzard 2, Gorsia's also got Thunder 1, a 10 MP multi-target spell. So whoops :sigh:.

Ok then, take two. Gorsia's got only 8 MP, so NOW we can revive Esuna! After that, we get Defense 1 on Esuna...

And now the fight is basically over. Because even if Esuna runs out of MP...

We can simply select one of our Recoveries...

And just like that, we've restored all of her HP AND MP! In fact, this here is precisely why we've been saving those Recoveries all this time, so hopefully you've taken my advice and never used them until now (or only used like, one).

If you have, well, there you go. This fight is now in the bag. Still, for all of the complaints that I have with 7th Saga's endgame, this is one part of it that I really like. Because after ALL of the generic boss fights that we've had to deal with, this game finally, FINALLY gives us something actually interesting! One that *gasp*, REQUIRES SOME AMOUNT OF STRATEGY FOR A CHANGE!

Really though, I love the idea behind this fight, both in concept and in execution. I mean, it's poor little old you against this complete juggernaut who's so insanely strong, that he can actually summon Pop-Eye arms at will! So just surviving the first few turns is a bit of a gamble for most parties...

And yet, if you are wise in how you use the Runes, and you manage your items correctly, you can still start to get a foothold. Little by little, Gorsia starts to get just a little bit weaker, just a little bit easier to outlast, until finally, you've nerfed him to oblivion. But even then that's not the end! Because as long as he's still got MP, the guy can take you down at any moment! So just like Rocky vs. Clubber Lang, you have to wait till Gorsia runs out of steam, then go in for the kill!

And one of the parts I really like? Even in Elnard, you couldn't afford to fight Gorsia any other way. Even in Elnard, Gorsia was this titan with sky-high Power and almost capped Magic and Speed, so there wasn't much the localizers could even do to buff him! I mean, they pumped his Power a little, and gave a meaty increase to his Guard, but other than that, Gorsia is about the same between versions!

So all in all, I like Gorsia. The strategy here is way more involved than every other boss fight in this game, which is why it's such a darn shame that this game doesn't have more of these kinds of fights. Instead, every boss fight is forgettable at best, and downright annoying at worst.

But anyways, is that the end? Have we finally defeated Gorsia?

Gorsia's Death March

Nope! Looks like Gorsia's still got something to say!

Or, at least...his voice does :what:.

Gorsia: If I go down, I'll take you with me!

Oh noes! Gorsia just killed Esuna with low budget animation! THE HORROR :aaaaa:!!

GORSIA: You'll never win. I'll be back! Saro, we shall meet again!

Welp, game over. Nothing we can...

A Long Awaited Rest

Oh, wait...is that Saro? Talking to us from beyond the grave? Why yes it is!

SARO: GORSIA has destroyed your flesh, but I will not let you die. I will give you my flesh, and you will be reborn as my descendent.

You can tell because of his really weird obsession with flesh. Like, we've met him twice, and already he's used that word three times :keke:. So anyways, here's the ending!

How extraordinary! A child is appearing in the light!

SARO is sending his child to us!

We shall name him Lemele. It is our responsibility to record the history of these fights on the stone tablet so that this child will not succumb to the dark power when it reappears in the future.

Aaand cue the credits!

Actually, I respectfully disagree with you there. For as obviously flawed as this game is, there ARE a lot of really good things about it. The presentation and atmosphere, for example, are the most immediate things. No other Yu-Gi-Oh game goes out of the way to really make
A Hero's Rebirth (Ending Credits Theme)

Well then, that sure was an ending! I mean, I know this game was probably somewhat rushed, but they seriously couldn't have made it just a little longer? They couldn't have put in any cinematics, like what happened with Melenam sinking? Not even an ending text scroll, like what Mega Man X1 had?

Eh, guess not, though at least they have neat little animations of all of the PC's in the credits. As in, we get to see all of their physical attack and spell animations, so that's nice...I guess.

Anyhoo, this game may be content to go out with a whimper, but I'm certainly not. Take heed, there's still a LOT more for me to cover before this LP is over. I've got weapon, spell, and enemy names to translate, dummied out towns and enemy names to check, and of course, I still have to show you all how to beat the endgame with Kamil and Olvan as your Elnard partner! Because while Lux and Esuna were very well equipped for Gorsia, OTHER characters and party configurations are...decidedly not so well prepared. Let's just put it that way.

And in case you are wondering, yes, Saro did just send Esuna, a woman, into the future to get reincarnated as Lemele, a man. And what's worse, Gorsia has ALSO taken a two-way ticket towards that time period as well, so he's still not dead! What are the implications of this? Well...

This segues us into probably the most hotly contested aspect of this game's story. Mainly, is this story a tale of triumphant, where we finally defeat Gorsia? Is the present now properly prepared to prevent Gorsia from killing and impersonating Lemele once again?

Or, is this a tale of woe, where the whole world is trapped in a time loop? Are Saro, Lemele, and Gorsia all trapped in a cyclone of despair and misery, destined to die again and again and again? I myself have been thinking rather hard about that, and I personally lead towards the former option. And in one of the next updates, I will explain why!

Oh yes, and one more thing. In addition to all that, we may just get yet another Elnard mini-update, hosted by everyone's FAVORITE megalomaniac and dictator...

Wilme! Yes, he still has to complete his journey too! And he's got a lot of catching up to do! So if you all want to see that, I'd be down with exploring the Mid and Endgames of Elnard as well (albeit, much abbreviated of course).

And now...for the big reveal!

See this here? Robert Jerauld, the one who handled the "English Script"? The guy who I tried to contact, but failed? Well, just a few days ago, someone managed to get an interview with him!

http://gaming.moe/?p=331

And it turns out, the guy has NOT forgotten about all the stuff he's done when Enix was still active, and he definitely has stuff to say about 7th Saga and the changes made to it in localization, as well as the other games that he's worked on.

But, obviously, since this wasn't a 7th Saga centered interview, we don't get ALL of our questions answered, and due to some confusing wording on his part, I wasn't sure if he said that he himself made all the localization changes, or whether Japan already made those changes before giving it to the localization staff. So, I got in touch with the guy who gave the interviewer Mr. Jerauld's email, and as of now, he's willing to give it to me! So, assuming all goes well, we may very well be able to host that interview with Mr. Jerauld!

How cool is that huh? And don't worry, I still remember what questions you guys wanted me to ask, but, if you have any more, feel free to let me know! But, onto the other credits...

Here's our composer! It's too bad he doesn't seem to have done anything else, because I really liked this game's score :sigh:...

So, onto what I thought of the game itself. First of all, let's start off with something non-central, like the Story. For me, this is probably the weakest part of the game.

I mean, it's got a really cool backstory, with all the stuff about Gorsia and Saro, the Runes, Melenam, and all that good stuff. Plus, I find the plot unique in that you're not actually trying to save the world for most of the game, nor are you actually trying to go around helping people. You're simply some guy following someone elses orders, and trying to gather items of incredible power. And sure, you DO help people along the way, but generally only because it happens to be convenient for you. Heck, the only truly altruistic thing you can do is help out Belaine and Telaine, and even THAT'S totally optional!

So, add in the whole dynamic we have with the Apprentices, who we can forge alliances with, or fight along the way, and you've got some neat ideas. But, here's the problem. The writing itself is so dry and minimalistic, that all of these ideas just kind of go to waste. And since BOTH of your Apprentices are generally silent protragonists, you don't really get to see any kind of interactions with them either. You just spend all your time talking to NPC's, who themselves just kind of shout exposition at you. And let's not even get STARTED on how obviously rushed the Melenam and Ending sequences were!

Finally, I really wish the apprentices themselves played a larger role in the plot. Like, maybe there would be sequences where Esuna would do something cool to help you advance the game. Or maybe you and your partner would meet someone else and their partner, and you two would either make a truce to fight, say, whoever took over Patrof, or maybe the surviving apprentices would try to follow you in to the past, and show up randomly at various towns...stuff like that.

Also, the writing is kind of dry, but, I kind of blame the localization for that one, so I'm not going to count that against the game.

Still, it's not a total wash. For one thing, the Apprentices at least have decent backstories. Lejes was an orphan who was raised by a kindly old lady in Lemele, Olvan is an old veteran who wants longer life, Kamil seems to be a soldier from Padal, Esuna is an adventurer, Lux has his mysterious past, Wilme is a monster who doesn't like how most civilians treat him, and Valsu seems to be some sort of acolyte from Valenca. So that's all good stuff.

Plus, there's that awesome plot twist, with Lemele turning out to be Gorsia and all that. Plus there's that whole time loop stuff that used to be the stuff of much debate on Gamefaqs. So all in all...

I'm going to give this game a 6/10. Maybe a 7/10, but, that feels a little generous to me. Cool ideas, but, not nearly enough follow up on those ideas.

Now then, the graphics. For the most part, they are extremely well done, even ahead of their time in the case of the random encounters. I mean, we have the Mode 7 transitions to the battlefield, we have sprites that actually MOVE when they attack...and I really like the art style, especially for the characters! The character sprites actually kind of realistic and detailed, and aren't all chibi-styled like many other RPGs.

I guess the only complaint I have then, is that sometimes some of the environments are kind of bland. I mean, the world is pretty barren, which is fine...but even when you head to the past, nothing actually looks any different from how it looked in the future, which obviously doesn't make sense. And the battle screen you get while in a dungeon always seemed somewhat unimaginative to me. And finally, some of the movements that sprites make, like Esuna and Kamil's crit animations, are a little choppy...

Buuut, these are all really minor complaints, so for the graphics, I think I'll give them a 9/10!

Next we have the soundtrack, which...I think I'll give an 8/10. See, the compositions themselves are awesome. I mean, they really are great. It's a shame that this composer ended up being a one-hit wonder, because he seems to do a good job at making all kinds of music. The soundtrack is somber, wistful, and atmospheric for the overworld, extremely cheery and happy for all the towns, appropriately epic and tense for the dungeons, and even outright wacky at times (in a good way of course). And in fact, one of the main things that makes the grinding not so bad (at least for me), is that I get to listen to this awesome, AMAZING bit of music here...

Battle in a World of Light

I still remember my very first time playing this game. I was looking for a hard RPG, but still kind of nervous about whether or not this game would be any good...and then I got to hear this. With it's catchy techno beat, that nice kind of ambient chord in the background, and then the way it just EXPLODES into this really frenetic tune in the 2nd half...I fell in love with it the first moment I heard it. So why does the soundtrack only get an 8/10? Well...see, here's the thing...

Again, the compositions, by themselves, are good...but the instruments and the sound quality? Not so much. I remember reading a review once that described the music. And if I remember right, that review said something about it "sounding like it was recorded by throwing pots and pans at a wall inside a cave" or something like that. And while that's obviously an exaggeration...I do kind of agree here. In fact, if you ask me, some of the chords sound like they came right out of Mario Paint!

I mean, take the Church music for example. It's supposed to be organ music that you'd hear in a Church, and it's not bad...but it's very heavily synthesized and MIDI'd, and some of the tunes are kind of screechy. Then there's that "alarm" song at Melenam...

Point is, even compared to other SNES games at the time (like FFIV and FFVI), the sound quality doesn't hold up. So that's a problem...

Then there's my other nitpicks with the soundtrack. For as good as it is...there's not enough of it. In fact, it's really weird to me that the composer went to the trouble of making no less than four overworld themes, and yet didn't even make a FINAL BOSS THEME! I mean, really, why would you do that? No Final Castle theme, no Past Dungeon battle theme, no unique battle theme for the Apprentices, the same two Dungeon themes are used over and over...Again, it's like there was other stuff planned, but they didn't have quite enough time to add it all in.

Oh, and Gorsia's theme, I thought, wasn't terribly fitting. But whatever.

And finally...we have the Gameplay of 7th Saga. Now obviously, as far as I go, I absolutely LOVE playing this, as it appeals to the Blood Knight in me. I mean, it's just so interesting to me to try and figure out ways to beat someone at as low of a level as I can, or to manipulate the mechanics of a game to do things it never expected me to do, or to see how low I can cut down grinding times...things like that. It's one of the biggest reasons why I love the Dragon Quest series...

But, even putting aside my somewhat..."different" taste in difficulty, this is not a bad game by any stretch. In fact, I would even say that it's ahead of its time in some areas. I mean, there's the Crystal Orb, which allows you to actually see the encounters on the map rather than having them be completely random. And then there's also gems like the Emeralds, Rubies, and Sapphires, which essentially act as a portable bank system. And heck, you even had the ability to recruit or fight several unique characters with their own unique histories and personalities, something that I don't remember ANY RPG letting you do in the NES-SNES eras!...

Plus, I thought some of the battle mechanics were very unique and interesting. I mean, having your accuracy, chance to run, and evasion be determined by your Speed was a very creative use of the stat, especially considering that it never did anything besides determine who goes first in most RPG's. And then there were Defend-Attacks and the ability to choose which apprentice went first in the fight. So all of those aspects of the game made for a system that was simple and easy to get the hang of, yet STILL allowed for complex strategies, which I count as the very definition of a well designed battle system.

And yet, as we all know, for every incredible idea present in this game, there was also at least one stupendously dumb decision to counter-balance that, even in the Elnard version. I mean, Offensive Magic is severely underpowered, the apprentices are about as unbalanced as you can get, most of the equipment is either worthless, or hidden in some random tile that you'd never choose to Search if you didn't have Gamefaqs, and most of the boss battles are so simple, that one could probably make a LUA script to beat most of them.

In addition, the game takes the FFXIII Route of actually taking options AWAY from you once you got into the past. I mean, seriously?! We have the Runes and the ability to fight and select apprentices, which are two of the main things that set this RPG apart from all the others...and then you take all that stuff AWAY FROM ME?! PERMANENTLY?!?

To me, that would be like if I were playing Golden Sun, and then 2/3rds of the way through, the game came in and took all of the Djinn away from me. Like, can you imagine how much worse the reviews for it would have been if that had happened? And yet, that's essentially what this game did, which is ridiculous!

Then of course, there's the difficulty of the English version, which, I'm very...mixed on. I mean, let's be clear here, I think this game's legendary difficult at the very least made it much more memorable than it otherwise would have been. Heck, if it weren't for that, I never would have even known it existed, and in fact, would not have had nearly as much pleasure in playing it as I did...

And yet, not every gamer is like me. Which is fine, because I don't believe there's anything wrong with a game being absurdly hard, so long as it's well designed. And in some ways, the difficulty of 7th Saga IS well designed, as most of the buffs made to the enemies, and some of the nerfs made to the apprentices, actually made a lot of sense. And as I said, for as ridiculous as the enemies were in Gorsia's castle, I actually thought that was a very good and creative way of addressing that fact that you could easily skip most of them. Now, instead of a boring snooze-fest, Gorsia's Castle is almost like a puzzle game in that way...

But, then there's stuff like the lack of B. Protects in the past, the elimination of Elnard growths, the inability to chance your party in the past, and how easy it is to make every single Apprentice hate you forever. And that brings me to the number 1 problem that drags this game more than anything else about it.

Basically, in my humble opinion, there are just way, WAY, WAY too many beginners traps. I mean, let's count them...

1) You could choose a bad character (like Kamil).

2) You could fight all the Apprentices, and have them hate your guts forever, despite the game NEVER warning you that this could happen. Heck, a lot of them, like any fight with Valsu, are even presented as a friendly sparring matche, so why in the world would THAT make them never want to join me again?!

3) You could level up too high, and have the Apprentices be extremely hard to kill as a result (especially if you accidentally lose your Runes).

4) You could use up your B. Protects before going to the Past, not knowing that you'll never be able to get them again (which is itself extremely stupid).

5) You could bring a bad, unbalanced party without any spell buffs (or even healing for that matter) into the past, and be stuck with said party forever.

So, all in all, I personally would give the Gameplay a 7/10. I mean, how can I, in good conscious, give a higher Gameplay rating to ANY game where there's THAT many ways to permanently mess yourself up? Heck, even I had to restart the game once just because Kamil was such a waste of space.

And in fact, I believe a 7/10 would be the overall score that I give the game. And fortunately, that score actually becomes more like an 8/10 once you know how to play it, but, it really shouldn't be necessary to go through so much hassle just to play it properly to begin with :/...

But, anyways, that's it for me. Have a nice day, and look forward to the bonus content! See you then!

drat, I didn't even think the game was winnable with Lux. Good work! This game was a challenge.

Yeah, I'll say...I mean, Lux is actually the easiest guy to beat the game with, but you still REALLY have to know your stuff. Stuff that, unfortunately, you don't necessarily know until the game's already plastered you a good number of times :cheeky:.

I was always under the impression he was the easiest for the first half, then one of the hardest for the second because his equipment is so limited and his stats taper off.

Then again, I never beat the game myself, though I've tried every so often. Do you think you might do 7th 2?

Well, his Power and Guard are high enough that he doesn't really need equipment at all (and in fact, it makes him that much more effective since you don't need to spend a ton of money on weapons and armor). And if anything, his stats actually get BETTER because when he gets his Tune-Up, he gets a 30 point boost to HP and MP, and a 20 point boost to everything else!

Also, as for the sequel...I probably will someday, but, I've never even completed it, so right now, I can't really do anything nearly as comprehensive as what I did with this game. But, if I enjoy the game, then you can bet on seeing it one day :) !

You're already dead
I was maybe 15 levels higher than you were in the tower and Kamil could barely put a dent on any enemy at that part. I am glad that magic is weak in that game. Kamil would end up getting OHKO in half the encounters with mage classes. I never had to save-scum every battle in a game until I fought F.Bird users.
This whole possessing thing sounds like Pison is also a victim of this. Dying so often and coming back different each time.

Hmm, so that would put Kamil at about Level 44 then? Yeah, without Elnard boosts, even the best apprentices struggle with the endgame, let alone Kamil himself. Should be interesting, then, to see what kind of strategy I can draw up for that point of the game, eh?

Scalding Coffee posted:

Hmm...that's an interesting thought. Plus, the guy seems like he might have actually been in on the whole "Lemele is actually Gorsia" thing, judging by his death quote...

"It's not over yet. You'll soon regret what you've done. I can't wait to see the look on your face when that happens. Heh, heh, heh...ha, ha, ha..."

Also, as to that Interview with Mr. Jerauld...I got his email address, and now I'm going to email him, so things are looking good! So then, here are the questions I plan to ask him...

1) A little bit about himself and his background (because it seems like most interviews do that).

2) How he came to work on 7th Saga

3) What were his duties (did he actually translate the game himself, or did he just proofread what others did? Also, was he at all involved in altering the difficulty of the game. If not, who was.).

4) What was working on the game like (so stuff like "was it hard, were you under tight time constraints, etc., etc.").

5) His favorite character, and his favorite moments in the game (this is more to break the ice a little before the following series of complicated questions that he may not even be able to remember).

6) If he was involved in altering the difficulty of the game, what exactly did he do? Did he do everything, or did he only take away the Elnard growths, or did he only buff enemy stats, etc. (because the last interview I linked seems to imply that at least some of the changes made to the game were done by the development team themselves, before the localizers ever got their hands on it).

7) Did he ever get any game designer documents further explaining some of the lore in the game, or any unused concepts, or anything like that?

8) What was his opinion on the whole "Time Loop" issue?

9) Speaking of which, what about the U.S. manual that seemed to imply that there was a Time Loop? Was that in the original instruction manual, or was that a creative liberty added by the localization team?

10) A lot of names are noticeably different than they are in the Japanese game (Like Serpent actually being named Luise in the Japanese version). How much of that was due to character limitations, and how much of that was due to him taking liberties.

11) Some text, such as Tafuro telling you that he wanted a Letter from his mom in Elnard (so basically a hint as to what to do next), was either altered, or taken out of the English script. Again, how much of that was due to character limitations, and how much of that was due to him taking liberties?

12) Looking back on the game as a whole, did he have fun? And what are his impressions on how the English game ended up? Like, is he fond of how it ended up, or are there things he would do differently if he were localizing it today, things like that.

Optional One I May Ask Him If He Still Seems Willing To Answer More Questions) What about the dummied out towns of Bulando, and all that? Yes, there are three dummied out towns in the game. So were those going to have any significance to the plot at all, or was there a story behind them that got scrapped? Just out of curiosity

So, is there anything else any of you would want to ask, or does this all seem fine?
