What's really sad is he was broken down and really unable to do very much leading into the LA Park feud 9 years ago, which was rumored to be his swan song. He really shouldn't have been in the ring, even doing the comedy heavy matches he normally did. Very very sad.

LA Park has been in advertisements and various TV shows in Mexico since AAA asserted control over the gimmick so people are well aware of the change. He just didn't appear on any US TV as LA Park until recently (MLW) and most American wrestling fans have zero frame of reference for lucha outside of WCW in the 90s.
