As an example, my unit once was ordered to send 4 helicopters but only 2 sets of crews to a boat. They wanted all 4 helicopters flown to Hawaii to rendezvous with said boat, that was infact, in the Indian Ocean. Our XO spent 2 weeks arguing with the planners who ordered this via email before they realized what they had asked for.

Then they asked for 5 helicopters and 6 crews, and changed the route to something almost as stupid, but at least possible. We were on the boat for about 6 weeks before they told us to go back home because our airframe wasn't needed

I knew every single thing that was happening up to the moment because the girlfriends and wives of the unit were calling one another reading the emails to one another and their SOs, who would then bitch about it in the shop.

The idea is that these units are made up of the only competent people in the military.
Kind of like how Audis are made of the only good parts from VW plants.
