showbiz_liz posted:I've only found one article that really explains the funding structure so far, here it is. Basically: Gaumont produces it, and it is paid for by Gaumont and 'five to ten' other companies, including to some degree "several broadcasters across Europe" including AXN (a Sony property which has channels worldwide, across Asia and South America as well as Europe); DeLaurentis Co; and NBC. No one has reported on the actual proportions involved, but the general number I've seen thrown around is that, with the co-funding, it costs NBC about as much as a panel talk show. Entertainment Weekly posted:Sources say the first year cost the network a license fee to Gaumont of only $750,000 per episode If these numbers are true, and Season 4 would have cost about the same, then it would be foolish for nobody to pick this up.

They probably saw too much renaissance nipples, maybe even a penis or two and went insane. There's an fantastic episode of Millennium (by Chris Carter of Xfiles) from the demons' point of view, called 'Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me'. One of them torments a TV standards and practices guy. The guy then goes and tries to censor a stripclub then takes a gun to the set of "X-files" with Scully and Mulder lookalikes and shoots a bunch of people only to have the footage of the killing spree be used in a future episode. Darin Morgan, who wrote the episode, was hounded by Fox S&P for overusing the word crap in an episode about cockroaches on the X-files Fox S&P: Incestuous wierdos burying a dead deformed baby and keeping limbless wife-momma on wheels under the bed: OK. Saying the word crap: NOT OK.

You know, I'm just spitballing here, but Epix is looking for scripted drama and they're co-owned by MGM. Wouldn't that be an ideal home for Hannibal? It'd definitely make the rights issue a lot easier to deal with.

hope and vaseline posted:Millennium was a hell of an uneven show but that was one of the best episodes of stand-alone genre television imo Yeah it's of theirs 'odd one out' episodes, sometimes they worked (José Chung) sometimes they went horribly (the KISS cameo episode). The show holds up well, I do a rewatch around christmas every year or so. Their internet and cellphones are obviously dated but the atmosphere in many episodes is dripping with dread and the aftermath of crime on both a killer and victims, the effects of tragedy are properly explored. Some episodes are a little gimmicky and you get the impression Fox was pushing for more procedural, more conspiracy and a lot less darkness. That first episode with a serial killer following the deadly sins, paraphrasing Yeats' second coming, Milton and Dante, trippy visuals and serious horror was all very reminiscent of Thomas Harris and his 'transforming' art inspired killers and their 'designs'.

Here's a good article that gives a brief overview of some possible new distributors.. This guy seems less sure about Netflix and less dismissive of Amazon than several other articles I've seen.

Forbes.com is basically a social media site for people who want to pretend to be syndicated columnists. They have this giant site full of literally thousands of "contributors" who are basically Just Some Guy writing articles with a traffic-based ad revenue model of some kind. The end result is that people are constantly linking to "an article on forbes.com" not realizing it has basically nothing to do with the print magazine.

Because a thousand people talking about something on the internet can make it look like ten thousand people care about it. See also: like 99% of online petitions/movements/causes that seem like they have a huge following and then miraculously don't end up succeeding or actually doing anything. In this case it's at least helpful for the show since streaming services actually kind of care about a show's online/social media following/support since a lot of those people are more willing to sign up for internet streaming services than your average TV viewer.

I heard network tv in general has taken a beating this year. Like a 20% drop across the boards in most cases. Is there any truth to that?

A bunch of studies have come out in the last few years and confirmed the feeling that more and more people are switching from traditional TV/cable subscriptions and going to online only streaming services. Ratings are pretty much down across the board, and Netflix keeps getting bigger and bigger. It's partly why we've seen a bunch of networks scramble to put together some kind of online subscription/service in the last couple of years. They know they're bleeding customers and offering them more things online is a more reasonable solution/band-aid then trying to find the next Walking Dead or GoT ratings/viewers monster.

I don't particularly mind Hannibal being cancelled, as life with imitate art and Hannibal will be broadcast in Europe and Americans will wander around wondering where they can find it. Maybe. I don't particularly understand comments levelled at the shows aesthetic or bizarre qualities. I think it depends why you watch the show, and maybe television in general, but I am so pleasantly surprised that something like this is broadcast at all. The cinematography, sound, effects, acting and so on are all fantastic in my eyes, as I enjoy quite over the top and ridiculous media generally. In other shows the high brow is aped by having Air on the G String play and men grumbling in front of abstract expressionist art (see Daredevil)I don't confuse a show about a serial killer to be as sophisticated as the art it references, but to raise awareness of those arts so that people may go and experience it for themselves can only be a good thing. I work in the arts, particularly in outreach programmes, and I'd like it if more people watched shows like this rather than the Big Bang Theory or Agents of Shield if only so I didn't have to listen to the same four conversations about poo poo every day.

The thing to remember about S&P is that they're not actually moral guardians clutching their pearls and going, "Won't someone think of the children!" even though that's how they're often thought of. Standards and practices exists to minimize the number of complaints the network gets so they don't get sponsors chased off or fined by the FTC. And of course, the view that people get of them is going to be entirely centered around the creative people reacting to their notes.

Yeah it doesn't surprise me that Hannibal got taken down. It was always teetering on that edge of renewel/cancellation and with viewers steadily dropping their cable subscriptions (then maybe pirating just the one or two shows they like?) the axe man was always coming despite a small but solid viewership.
