Why does Will have feelings for him? Is it because over time he recognized that he enjoyed living in the minds of murderers and found a common kinship with actual murderer Hannibal? Is his morbid fascination with death the reason why he's attracted to the most morbidly fascinating of serial killers? Or is it something else?

Fast Luck posted:As I recall, Hannibal infected him with some disease that made him mentally ill and got him sent to insane prison, where he told everyone Hannibal was guilty and was trying to figure out a way to kill Hannibal. Then he's even doing stuff like kidnapping Freddy Lounds to try to get to Hannibal. Finally, after Will refuses to "forgive" Hannibal, Hannibal kills Abigail who Will saw as a daughter right before his eyes, and then guts Will. And now Will is forgiving Hannibal and saying Hannibal is his friend. Is it some kind of hosed up survivor's guilt or did he start wanting to be Hannibal's friend at some point In Season 1, Will and Hannibal became (as far as Will knew) genuinely close friends and confidants. He was closer to Hannibal than anyone else on the show, right up until the last episode of that season. When that all came crashing down and Will got wise, the thing is: everyone turned on him. Everyone thought he did it. So he suddenly had NO friends whatsoever. Even once he was exonerated, many people (like Alana) still thought of him as an attempted murderer because he tried to kill Hannibal - which was a major turning point for him, to kill someone in cold blood. It changed him, and everyone saw that. ...except Hannibal was still trying to be his friend the whole time. Throughout this, Will, with his whole empathy thing, knew that Hannibal wasn't just loving with him - he actually did care about Will, and as Bedelia said, Hannibal did what he thought was best for Will (in order to transform him). Just, like, in an insane murder way. Will at this point still hates Hannibal, but he is also drawn to him, because Hannibal cares about him and understands him in a way that no one else on the show can. That's incredibly compelling if you're as fundamentally lonely and misunderstood as Will. So then Will gets out, and he (and Jack) realize that they now need to bait Hannibal with something he won't be able to resist. But the thing is, they can't completely lie to him. They have to give him something real. And since Will really is drawn to Hannibal, he is able to present himself as the ultimate bait. All he has to do is play up the dark parts of him that already exist, which he has repressed his entire life ("the urges you kept down for so long"), and play up his very genuine fascination with Hannibal. We see throughout the second half of season two that he is still driven by a desire to kill Hannibal - see the incredibly homoerotic "tell me, how would you do it" conversation - but that very desire was manufactured and encouraged by Hannibal in order to help Will get in touch with his darker self. A gateway drug to the joy of killing - a joy which Will was barely able to admit to himself after he killed GJH, but which he fully embraced when he tried to kill Social Worker Guy. Basically: Will thought he could totally handle it. Thought he could actually do what Hannibal has been trying to get him to do for a season and a half and open his mind to him and still manage to remain himself. But he couldn't. showbiz_liz fucked around with this message at 17:11 on Jun 26, 2015 |

So I never understood what people were complaining about with the dialogue on this show. Then I had to watch this week's episode with my TV's speakers and I could only follow about half the dialogue until I cranked the sound way the gently caress up. This show is so much better with nice headphones.

The show is so dense in both the dialogue and in the way its shot that I've completely given up on being able to fully digest both in one sitting. I watch an episode once and just let it flow, then I go back and watch it again a few days later and really dissect the dialogue and the plot.

I lost my father to cancer three months ago. "I opened my eyes this morning, and at that moment, before the weight of the day came for me, I didn't even think about Bella dying." I have not cried so hard at anything, ever. That scene wrecked me. Loved the episode. It was nice to see everyone back in gear, and Chilton's mouth prosthetic, ugh.

What a great episode. I love that they're not just using flashbacks to tell us what happened in the meantime, but they're using it as an opportunity to let us in each of their heads. We get to see just how Hannibal totally mind hosed each of them. Also did Will totally sail all the way from Maryland(?) to Europe? Makes perfect sense. It's probably the only way he'd get there undetected by anyone including Hannibal.

Alana in the hospital bed is our first peek at New Alana. She is strangely amused by her condition and not broken up about it at all. Alana in a wheelchair at Hannibal's house is Old Alana. She's concerned about Will, she's vulnerable, she gets rejected. Alana at Mason's is a solidified New Alana. She's clear about her new purpose. Maybe her rejection from Will permanently set her new persona.

This shows how the actress definitely has a whole new look for this season representing her change. Way more makeup, dramatically red lipstick. A way less natural look than before. In that last pic her face almost looks rubbery. It probably symbolizes how she's been forced to harden and develop barriers between herself and other people rather than staying vulnerable and being utterly manipulated. Possibly also foreshadowing for ulterior motives Alana has in helping Mason.

I like how in the novels and films, Chilton is just kind of this comedic relief rear end in a top hat you're supposed to write off. Esparza's performance early on was a close stylistic echo of Anthony Heald's, but while the show has not relented on making him an rear end in a top hat or, really, comedic relief, by giving him this established grudge against Hannibal the character's taken on an interesting edge that recontextualizes what reads as simple pettiness in the source material (lording his power over Hannibal, taking his books, treated him like a show dog, etc).
