Tom Noonan is scary as hell as Dollarhyde and Brian Cox is a great Hannibal Lecter. Mann's directing (frames within frames!) is top notch here too. He was directing Miami Vice at the time and was in top form. ![]() Manhunter spawned all of the procedurals that take up 50% of prime time now. Also anybody who hasn't seen Manhunter isn't seeing the appropriate mental images when they hear "Inna Gadda Da Vida".

Noted, I'll check it out. You don't have to spoiler on my account though. My point was that there are some of us that haven't read/seen the series.

Earlier this season I commented to a (straight, male) friend that I couldn't believe how gay this show had gotten, and he looked at me all confused like "huh, gay? Really? You think so?" Even he gets it now, though.

How did Hannibal manage to get such a sweet prison cell, at least compared to the movies. Maybe it should have been super lovely to really contrast the scenes where he is in his mind palace or whatever. They even let him cook delicious food!

I believe much of his cell was illusory - in the first scene with him in it, you can see the walls shimmer and change as he switches out the lodgings to a different style. No idea what the gently caress was going on with the food, though - they showed other people interacting with that, and usually they don't cheat that hard unless it's either obvious or they have a really good reason. Maybe they just order in nice food for him sometimes for some insane reason. Also: gently caress HANNIBAL for that letter he wrote to Will, that was super hosed up. "As your dear friend I only want what's best for you so please don't put yourself in harm's way again trying to stop this madman, PS here's a picture that I meticulously clipped out of the newspaper of the type of sweet family that will continuously get hideously butchered if you don't act that I am including for no real reason"

So Chilton's chat with Hannibal was basically a meta-commentary on the show itself, right? "The popularity of Hannibal Lecter has waned." "You with your fancy allusions, your fussy aesthetics - you will always have niche appeal."

Steve Yun posted:I think the idea is that Jack pulled on Molly's heart strings, who then convinced Will to go. It could have been portrayed more clearly. Yeah it's pretty much stated in the book that that's the case, if I recall. Jose Oquendo posted:Yes I think the ending in Manhunter is better. I thought the 'HE'S REALLY NOT DEAD" ending from Red Dragon just kinda felt cliched and fell flat for me. I also loved the crazy jump cut editing when Dollarhyde and Will use their guns. Well the whole point of that scene was that (spoilered for the people who haven't read or watched any adaptation of Red Dragon) Dollarhyde was deliberately trying to convince Reba that he died since that was the only way to save her. He lets her get the shotgun with blanks, lets her shoot him and then pretends to be dead so that she'll leave him there. The secondary part of his plan was of course to go after Will while under the cover of being presumed dead. And it's all telegraphed pretty heavily in the book, I don't think the reader is meant to assume he's really dead at that point.

King Vidiot posted:Yeah it's pretty much stated in the book that that's the case, if I recall. My thing about the ending of Manhunter is that I understand why Mann changed it. In the middle of the 80's and the slasher movie boom, the killer is still alive is beyond cliche at that point. The novel, being written in 1981, could probably get away with that more than a movie in 1986 could.

I got the impression Chilton had him cook for both of them, since you might as well if you've got a master chef on lockdown and you know he's not putting people in there anymore

How am I the first person to mention Richard Armitage? God drat, Richard Armitage! Anyway yeah great start to this arc, and seems back to the s2 style, which I'm sure will make some happy. Also that one shot of Dolarhyde with the film round his face and the light coming out of his eyes and mouth like the glass later on is one of my new favourite Hannibal shots ever.
