The only question, will it be hardcore or softcore?

I just started watching Trek and this was extremely obvious to me.

I like T’Ana on Lower Decks

Boimler, glowing blue and humming loudly: “How long is this going to last?!”

T’Ana: “How am I supposed to know? You look like a goddamn science project.”

Finished watching Voyager and it was a lot of dumb fun. Some incredibly good episodes, a few stinkers (Seven's 'don't believe assault survivors' ep. pretty much every Barclay/Troi episode, did they shoot all those in an afternoon?), but you at least feel like everyone is growing and learning things instead of existing miserably in some grimdark nightmare.

On that note my wife wanted to finish Picard to see what happened to Seven, while saying she also loved Icheb and I said uhhhhhh maybe you shouldn't. Gave a general outline of what happened to him minus needless explicit eye torture and she agreed.

Anyways was thinking of going into DS9 next. I watched a decent amount when I was younger but was wondering, there's an ok amount of silly/fun/intriguing episodes right? It's not all Bajoran torture camps?

DS9 has plenty of legitimately fun episodes, it's nowhere near doom-and-gloom all the time.

I feel like Picard was designed for post-show Talking Dead-style or YouTube "17 things you missed" dissection listicles because there was a ton of stuff that seemed like the show expected you to know and Icheb was definitely not something I remembered. On the other hand I think I did remember assimilated Romulans from Voyager but the show said those basically don't exist, so just tell me what to remember show drat you

Except the other series go moustache-twirlingly evil with it because they know it's meant to be stupid. Discovery tries to play the Mirror Universe straight and it just does not work.

TNG didn't do the Mirror Universe

Also come on Discovery didn't have to spend a third of the loving season there

MikeJF
Dec 20, 2003

The mirror universe is yet another one of those things where Bryan Fuller had a story he wanted to tell and explore about a character with major regrets coming face to face with the roads not taken but then there was a change in showrunner and they kept the basic plot beats but not the actual meaningful story or exploration or themes or actual point of it so now they're just in the mirror universe for a while for no reason.

I think in his version Fuller said it wasn't even the Mirror Universe, just a mirror universe, closer to the normal timeline.

Forgot TNG didn't use it. Guess it kind of blended together in my mind with DS9 what with evil Mirror Universe Worf.

Oh yeah I'm not saying it was used well, but I'm just saying you can't blame Discovery for inventing it. It wasn't like the concept had ever been good since the first appearance in the 60s. It's always been dumb.

It used to be dumb in a fun way though. Discovery had one dumb fun episode with Captain Killy then pivoted hard into Lorca grooming Mirror Burnham.

It worked in TOS because it was hammy and silly as hell. DS9 halfway took it seriously and that was a mistake IMO

The mirror universe wasn't even a big part of any of the (non-disco) shows other than DS9, which had an episode going back to it every season or so (minus 2).

Same kind of deal with section 31:

Anyway I'm not sure what point I'm making, I was just curious and wanted to look it up. I guess I do find it a little funny that the show has only had just about as many episodes as one season of TNG but have gone back to those two wells more than any other series.
