gimme the GOD drat candy posted:so there wasn't a technical limitation? man, that scene would have gone a lot differently if they had sent along a redshirt or two. They were there just to extract the one dude. A big group really wouldn't be ideal in that situation. The dumb part was sending over the two senior officers instead of Michael plus a few security team members. Then again this is Trek and they've been doing that poo poo from the get go.

so hold on, how come riker gordi and the robot are doing the away missions? aren't they senior officers? wouldn't sending some jr randos make more sense

appropriatemetaphor posted:so hold on, how come riker gordi and the robot are doing the away missions? aren't they senior officers? wouldn't sending some jr randos make more sense I mean in any sane military you're not sending the captain and first officer into a dangerous situation at the same time. They even poked fun of the trope in a TNG episode once.

i'm not doubting how they sent the two most senior officers over, just how they didn't send anyone else. i was wondering if i missed something since it was competing for my attention with a BRAND NEW KITTEN, and obviously std lost that battle.

Trek being Trek is far more noticeable in the era of prestige television.

The biggest flaw in STD is that it is a mash up of crap they have done before, crap that makes no sense, and the same crap you see on every military/cop show at 9pm on your favorite station. Which all mixes together into being incredibly boring.

Kittens are irrelevant. We will add its biological and technological cuteness to our own. Resistance is mew-tile.

Infidel Castro posted:Yeah, that was probably the worst part of the pilot. Why would someone genetically engineer cattle to be able to sense when they're gonna die? They weren't genetically engineered or bred. He said his species was "biologically purposed" to sense death. As in, the evolutionary trait they adapted for survival was skittishness and knowing when poo poo was about to pop off, helping them avoid predators

Orville has actors from DS9 and Expanse/Always Sunny, which almost makes up for having to hear/see Seth.

it's nice that they have a large budget and competent actors. too bad about everything else, though.

Ep3 of The Orville is pretty good. Twist on some old themes. Good poo poo. Mercer is an odd kind of Captain. He seems to let his crew do most of the work.

In the home stretch of a DS9 rewatch and it never occurred to me before that the one of the reasons Sisko hates Vic's casino is because of Far Beyond the Stars. For Cassidy and Jake it's history that's 300+ years in the past, but Sisko lived through that poo poo first hand so the wounds are little fresher.

Nog was definitely the last character you'd expect to have one of the most interesting arcs on the show. The ep where he asks to join Starfleet is pretty great; the way Sisko's face falls when Nog starts his reasoning with 'I don't want to end up like my father.'

He's going to be Dwight Schrute down to the mustard color clothing and oblong spectacles. Netflix got him cast based on their reams of demographic data. They know from Office reruns he puts asses in $11.99 per month seats.

They know from Office reruns he puts asses in $11.99 per month seats. I don't think Netflix had any say in the actual production, they just paid CBS a boatload of money for the right to stream the show outside the US. That said I think it was this thread where someone pointed out "every Klingon ever is just a slightly buffer Dwight" so you might be on to something there

I don't think I've hated a star trek character more than Kai Winn. I'll never understand how Sisko remotely put up with her.
