Russell works because he assumes people are totally oblivious to him manipulating them, and he's usually right, but when he's wrong it really fucks him up. Unlike Gamby he seems to have come into the show with a lot of social capital, but he's rapidly burning it for dumb reasons (because it makes the show more interesting).

I really loved the scene of Russell having to take a hit of weed and hacking up a storm, only to take another subtle drag while he's trying to bribe the kids to come down.

I'm not 100% against nuking eggs. Using a small shallow bowl and a microwave for 45 seconds or so is a great way to make a single egg that'll fit nicely in a sandwich or burger.
