I'm the game that tracks argon levels, but also doesn't actually simulate an atmosphere and performs a simple script check at the airlock to determine whether to kill the spaceman that would have been becoming controlling the ship.

Noting that the game is full of gas but entirely lacks atmosphere is a good observation imo.

This is a snapshot of what's in his brain. He had to literally have told someone to track argon levels.

The backers want cargo, trading, bounty hunting, exploration, farming, repair scaffolds. They want research and design on weapons, power plants, and various ship subsystems, countless other things. Argon is being tracked.

This image alone is a stunning shot of why this project is in a death march.

Hell, the very fact that Chris & Sandi were married was stamped “Top Secret” and secrecy was of paramount importance then because it would’ve made Wingman’s replacement by The Boss’s Wife even more controversial than it already was. Yet this lie too somehow held together long enough for her and Ben to carve out their famously awkward toe holds as the new faces of CIG during The LA Years.

A documentary about Warframe was released this week. I find it interesting because a lot of little details touch on things SC did/does wrong. Especially how they started with a fun MVP and sold it in order to fund development of what they really wanted to make.

The first part is mostly about the history of Digital Extremes and provides some interesting insight into mid tier developers and publisher relationships. The second part is more about how Warframe has evolved over the years. And given everyone's definition of alpha; it's still technically in alpha...

Scruffpuff posted:

This was part of the reason I grabbed a VR headset. The immersion factor is cool, and it's good to see how close we are now to the fantasy we had years ago, but primarily it's really cool seeing all these small indie developers just throwing poo poo at the wall to see what sticks.

The gaming scene hasn't been like this since the Commodore 64 days (you could call them "pre-genre") when devs had limited art, limited color palette, limited storage, and 64KB RAM. Now make a game - and some incredibly cool poo poo came out of that. Tons of garbage too, but it was worth sifting through.

Limited time, budget, and resources results in creative, interesting and entertaining games. Why does that sound so familiar?

What are some indies you'd recommend? I've scooped up a bunch over time, and the feeling of wild west is definitely cool. (Although the ones I've enjoyed the most have still been kinda classic-leaning in their gameplay ultimately I guess: Vertigo's Half-Life homage with its cool use of scale and bosses, Gorn's arena with rubberisation to get that weapon physics working. I guess H3 for just really really really liking guns etc, and mini modes. And things like Interkosmos's 'hit bits of your spaceship' puzzle-lite mini-narrative)

All the ones that have stretched for more experimental gameplay have fallen between stools for me though I think. (I guess Windlands got the closest but the motion system did for me early on. Stuff like Star Shelter was promising but it ultimately cribbed the EVA stuff from slicker titles like Echo Arena, so can't really give them pluses there)

EDIT: Been meaning to get to Rune Sage just because someone said the lo-fi hand magic combines like Magicka, but I kinda doubt it's as daft. Just seems like serene puzzling with bad floor textures...

Titles I'd recommend:

Brookhaven Experiment: at its heart a wave shooter that has you more or less landlocked, but with the incessant threat of creatures closing in from every side, a flashlight with limited battery power, and limited ammunition, the feeling of claustrophibia and the mounting threat is hard to beat

Raw Data: a near-perfect implementation of what VR multiplayer can be. Riddled with weird bugs and body-horror almost at CIG levels, nevertheless this is the go-to title for getting a glimpse of where VR can go at its best. A wave shooter with tower defense mechanics, several player classes (guns, shotguns, bows, swords) that really feel different and change up the game

Star Trek Bridge Crew: This is what the commando's think they're going to get. If you can get 4 people in this, the experience is untouchable. Each player solely in charge of either helm, navigation, engineering, or the captain's chair, you're 100% stuck in your silo and completely dependent on clear communication amongst the crew to get anything done. Helm needs more power to engines to outrun a threat, but you need to keep that power in shields to withstand a few more hits? Trying to determine where to allocate your limited repair personnel when multiple critical systems are failing? Get ready to communicate that problem to the captain, then have a crisis of conscience when he orders you to make the exact wrong call, where disobeying orders saves the ship, and obeying them kills you all. Not too many games can deliver that experience.

Vanishing Realms: A first-person RPG Zelda-lite experience where you take swords, shields, bows, and fireballs against what amount to simple origami-like enemies. Much more immersive feel than you'd think

Waltz of the Wizard: Free. Another great playground game in the fantasy vein

Space Pirate Trainer: first-person Galaga. Cheap and a must-have. Lots of cool weapon options and a simple premise. Be ready to burn calories like mad - P90X has nothing on this

Some of these aren't indies but still things I'd recommend. I have quite a few titles, some are very good and atmospheric (Paranormal Activity for example) but these are the ones I keep coming back to over and over again.

I think Serious Sam is next on my purchase list, but I'm open to recommendations.
