They changed the rule so they can stop play instead of waiting for a stoppage. Yes, once in a while the NHL does come up with a good rule change.

Watching that live I figured that they'd want to take another look at that, but I've never seen them stop the game.

I remember in one of the Canadian Olympic games, I forget who shot it but it went through the back of the net. The Canadian backup (I think Osgood?) had the ref check it at the next whistle.
