Good news, though I'm guessing the new actress will continue to voice Chloe regardless for the remainder of BtS (but if there is some kind of flashforward at the end of Episode 3 I wonder if it would be possible to get Burch back in there to record a line or two), plus I'm guessing the voicework for Episode 2 at least has probably already been finished by now.

It might be nice if they were able to get some of the old VA's (though if it's true that it takes place just before Max leaves for Seattle the only characters we're probably going to see are Max, Chloe and possibly Joyce and/or Max's parents) back for the bonus episode at any rate.

One missed opportunity in BtS with the new Blackwell students we're introduced to, is that none of their names overlap with the names on the Dark Room binders. Would have made for an interesting, and chilling callback.

Well we've got two more episodes so technically there's still time, I wouldn't count on it though (hell, even seeing Jefferson himself is probably a long shot at this point).

Dang.

I just beat it, and I was incredibly pleasantly surprised. I thought it was going to be a "more boring LiS but hey it's a LiS game so whatever" but I felt it really did a great job of putting you in the "in high school, super giddy and butterflies about a crush that makes you make weird choices" mindset. The voice acting , like LiS, is not the best during normal dialogue, but really shines during emotional moments.

God, I love this series.

So any word from Deck Nine regarding Episode 2 yet? I'd imagine probably next month by the earliest but you'd think we'd have gotten a trailer or something by now. I only got into the original game about a year after everything had already come out but how long was the gap between episode releases there?

Full episode trailers for Life is Strange S1 only came out a few days before release. Deck Nine themselves have said it would be between 8-10 weeks between episodes, which would put Brave New World's release somewhere around Halloween, but they're an entirely different studio and Dontnod had gaps growing to several months as development wore on.

Gotcha, well in this case we've only got 3 (or 4 depending on whether or not the bonus episode drops at about the same time Hell is Empty does) episodes to worry about rather than 5 so it shouldn't be quite as long a wait this time at the very least.

Also, despite this being a prequel i like that they set things up so that you're still not sure what's going to happen next. Though unless our mystery woman turns out to be some kind of demonic entity out to hurt Rachel personally and the climax of the game features an epic verbal slap fight between her and Chloe (or we shift genres completely and it suddenly turns into a fighting game for a scene ala MGS4) the stakes don't seem quite as high this time around (I can almost guarantee there's probably going to be a Backtalk challenge against Rachel at some point though).

But honestly I don't really mind this being a more slice of life type of story overall if that's how it ends up turning out.

Rachel specifically said that woman was "definitely not [her] mom" but it could be possible that she disappeared when Rachel was still too young to remember and her father remarried soon after (or they had a falling out and Rachel currently hates her mom's guts).

Rachel's dad also seemed the most visibly disturbed by the sight of the fire out of anyone in the final scenes so you could be on to something there. Though Rachel's relationship with him might not be the best ether as there's a line where she says "And my dad will definitely punish me with..." and then you're immediately given the dialogue choices of "I'm sorry" or "gently caress him". I'm not sure if it specifically means what I think it means (that is, potential domestic abuse) but you can certainly get that impression.

There's definitely something going on with that woman though as while everyone else was reacting to the fire at the end with either shock or silent awe, she was just sitting right in the thick of it grinning and smoking a cigarette. If the mom theory turns out to be true then that means Rachel's entire family is potentially sketchy, including Rachel herself (though we knew from the first game that Chloe's "angel" wasn't quite as pure as some had been lead to believe).

I like Rachel as a character overall but given what we know from Life is Strange and what we see of her in this episode I don't exactly trust her either.

Off the subject but I like that, like a lot of LiS characters, it's kind of left ambiguous whether Rachel is a good person at heart or not. On the one hand, she's clearly going through some personal issues and genuinely seems to care about Chloe but on the other, she's manipulative, skilled at both acting and lying and at times seems to know way more than she should (plus there's the whole issue of her hooking up with Frank behind Chloe's back later on), not to mention how she always seems to conveniently be in the right place at the right time as things go on.

Perhaps we should think of her like the placard said regarding the raven, "[she] is to be respected, never trusted". I don't think she's evil per se but there definitely is something not quite right about her.

Just think of it this way:

She's Laura Palmer.

True enough, much like Chloe herself being loosely based on Lizabeth Salander from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and both Max and Jefferson representing aspects of Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye. It's no secret that Life is Strange and its prequel crib from several sources (Twin Peaks, Donnie Darko and The Butterfly Effect being the main ones). Though in Rachel's case I hope the whole "sexually abused by her father" aspect of Palmer's character isn't adapted but you never know with this series.

I'm still not really sure what the plot of this game is about aside from Chloe and Rachel meeting and dealing with their personal issues (unless there's a flashforward or something at the very end it can't involve Rachel's disappearance as BtS is set 3 years before the orignal and apparently only takes place over the course of a week or so). The mystery woman and that Damon Merrick guy they mentioned at the mill are probably gonna be important too, not to mention the whole deal with Chloe and the Raven. Though the story also can't be anything too terribly big either as they've only got two more episodes to wrap things up.

Regardless, provided they keep to the proposed 8-10 week schedule I'd expect this game to wrap up around late December/early 2018 at the earliest (which is also probably around the time we'll finally get some info on what DontNod has planned for the sequel).

If they're going for the Rachel - Laura Palmer analogy, they might do what Lynch did with Fire Walk With Me: dial back the tweeness and the lighthearted moments while deconstructing our existing notions of the established characters. Since they're already showing Rachel to be more troubled than anyone in the original game let on, that might be what they're going for.

I think there's definitely a darker, more manipulative side to Rachel for the game to explore. It's probably no coincidence that she's cast as Prospero in the school play, and while she likes Chloe, scapegoating the school delinquent is a convenient cover when you need to get out of trouble.

There does seem more to her than meets the eye (as well as a line towards the end that implies her home life might be somewhat abusive, which would fit into the whole Laura Palmer connection). The events of that night (plus the incident at the mill the previous night) are pretty much guaranteed to come back to bite them in the rear end next episode.

Like I said, the plot can't be too terribly involved considering they've only got two episodes left. I'm guessing the majority of it will involve family issues (including the girls meeting each others respective families) , Chloe and Rachel's growing relationship, Chloe pissing off the wrong people and any supernatural stuff is probably going to be limited to incidental events and Chloe's dreams. Something bad is probably still going to happen later though considering the final episode title is based off the quote: "Hell is empty and all the devils are here". The devils in question either being some kind of enemy established in Part 2, Chloe and Rachel's personal demons or both, as was the case in the first game.

Were there any interesting tidbits hinted at in the leaked achievement list for Episode 2 that was released recently? There are some details in the preview images at least (Brand New World has Rachel in the outfit we saw in LiS as well as implying that Chloe gets her truck at some point and Hell is Empty has the girls back in the junkyard apparently wearing each others clothes).

Considering how the last one ended I'm kinda curious where the next episode is going to start. My guess is either back in Chloe's room or with the two of then camped out in the woods somewhere.

She always seemed clearly like a Laura Palmer type once we learn more about her in LiS, so them doubling down on that for BtS pleases me. I would hope her home situation isn't the same, if only because I don't know how well they can handle touching on that type of abuse in two episodes, but no doubt her family life must be missing something if her father is cheating. Her parents may have a rocky af relationship if she suspected her father of cheating enough to peep his phone and ditch school to spy on him.

There are enough examples of people tragically wronged by the evils of Arcadia Bay that Rachel being a direct Laura Palmer analogue would be a complete waste. Laura was the direct avenue that the viewer had into the disgusting evils of Twin Peaks and how it corrupts, where as Life is Strange has countless examples of that in Chloe, Jefferson, Nathan, The Vortex Club, Kate, ect. It would fall flat if Rachel turned into some evil manipulator like Laura Palmer.

Twin peaks spoilers:

Laura was a manipulating drug/sex addict who was repeatedly raped by her father, if they try to just use a 'bad dad' to do the same to Rachel it will fall so flat that it would be terrible

Rachel clearly seems to be manipulating Chloe a bit and probably sought her out initially for reasons besides mere attraction (plus she kind of seems to have the mindset of a child, thinking of everything as just a game and the like) but I don't think she's necessarily a bad person per se (though she isn't exactly completely trustworthy either).

While domestic abuse might be too big a topic to cover in just two episodes (though that's about how long it took to cover Kate's story in the last game) I'm willing to bet that we'll at least be getting a glimpse into Rachel's home life in the next episode (and related to that, some more information on our infamous mystery woman).

Yeah, that's exactly why I hope they go another direction with it. Her dad can be a dick in that he's cheating, but if they go full Leland it will feel cheap. A troubled home life is fine, but not what Laura went through.

The Laura analogue is great and I've always loved the series for it, but they do need to put their own twist on it.

The original season went into bullying, drugs, domestic abuse, suicide, teen pregnancy, mental illness, euthanasia, murder and oh yeah that whole time travel thing over the course of ~15 hours. I'm not so much worried they can't handle that kind of material fwiw, more I think it would be lazy if they lifted even more from Laura when Rachel has clearly been an homage/version of that character since season one. Like it would feel lazy instead of a loving reference after a certain point.

Plus a big part of what makes Leland work so well is his being a character from the start, being someone we sympathize with and then later have our suspicions of. If they introduce her father and rush into some Laura-esque trauma in two episodes, maybe rushed isn't the right word, but it wouldn't be as impactful I guess?

In general I'm happy with however much more Twin Peaks they want to throw in the game, I just hope they do something more/different with it.

While it doesn't look like they're going all the way to her disappearance prior to the first game it might be neat if we got to play as Rachel for a segment or two sometime in the remaining episodes (even if it's just a little thing like that one segment during the first game's Nightmare sequence where you suddenly become Victoria for some reason).

Speaking of the Nightmare, I wonder if they'll have something similar during the final episode of BtS as well (I'm guessing the dreams where we talk with Ghost Raven Dad are going to continue at the very least, maybe even getting a bit more dark and/or bizarre as we get closer to the end).

I've got my fair share of obsession over different types of media, but Life is Strange really hit me on a personal level I wasn't expecting. It took all these things I already loved and paid homage to them in some fun ways, providing me with this great cast of characters and story.

And apologies in advance for gettin' too real, but then there's Chloe, who is very much me as a little lezzie ten years ago, right down to the insecurities and rebellion, the feeling of abandonment from a dead father and a best friend who was also a girl I was in love with, to an rear end in a top hat stepfather trying his best with a mother trying to make ends meet, and down to the wake and bakes and even the hellas. It was a weird feeling seeing someone so much like me in a video game. But weird in the best way.

So far BtS has been delivering on everything that made Chloe and LiS so special for me. It'll be a sad day once this series is over and we move onto a new cast of characters, but I'm excited for that as well.

- Geek Remix has some good deep analysis videos of Life is Strange as the episodes were being released. Among other things, they predicted that Jefferson was a real creep after like Episode 2 and continue to put out similar material for Before the Storm.
- There are a million LPs out there by various youtube personalities but I'm fond of Miscat Squad and Kathleenmms as they both get really into it.
- Craig Perko has a whole channel dedicated to a long-form analysis of Life is Strange. Some of it is hella critical, but he's one of the very few youtube reviewers out there who genuinely understands what the themes of the game are about, and how they culminate in the final choice.
- Some guy has a youtube channel called Life is Songs containing some 40+ tracks inspired by the game (yes 40).
- Hannah Telle (the voice of Max) is a songwriter who released her first album in 2016. It's actually pretty good if you like twee indie stuff, and you enjoyed LiS, so I know you do.

That's just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the Life is Strange universe. Be warned that LiS fans are totally insane, and pursuing your curiosities can lead you down a dark path.
