I finished BTS yesterday. I felt like everything that happened between Chloe and Rachel felt way too rushed. When Rachel starts being mean to Chloe I just wanted to make Chloe tell her to go gently caress herself, but instead she just like absolutely loses it because of this girl who she has known for literally like 2 hours + one night of partying. I get that she's a teenager and also has a bunch of other poo poo going on but it was just too much I think. Also, while I can definitely see them being in a romantic relationship, in the first game Chloe never refers to Rachel as her girlfriend (or anything other than her best friend) and doesn't seem to have any feelings about Rachel that would suggest they broke up. AND Rachel is in a romantic relationship with Frank, so it's kind of jarring how quickly they seem to be falling in love. I think one of my biggest problems with BTS was that in the first game Max could almost always say something along the lines of what I wanted her to (with some glaring exceptions) whereas in this game Chloe almost never could. Maybe you relate more to Max, so her choices felt more natural. As someone who relates deeply to Chloe it all made sense to me, especially it you read into some of their interactions they've been lowkey admiring each other from afar for a little while. I can see where it would feel rushed, though. But everything is heightened and moving fast when you're 16 imo. e: I may have always read into Rachel and Chloe's relationship as romantic in LiS because of the clear Laura Palmer analogues. I saw Chloe as the James to Frank's Bobby in a sense, though in LiS both relationships are secret rather than Frank being her official boyfriend. esperterra fucked around with this message at 21:03 on Oct 7, 2017 |

exquisite tea posted:I think your feelings on Rachel are definitely accurate, and the next two episodes are going to play up the "does she really like me or is she just using me" kind of uncertainty that we all loved from our own adolescence. I know what you mean. When I jumped off the train, I had a flashback to teenage insecurity. I had a moment where I was afraid she was just going to stay on the train and laugh at me, leaving me stranded in the woods. exquisite tea posted:FWIW even before BtS was ever a thing I always viewed Chloe and Rachel's relationship as more romantic in nature than Chloe and Max, who I just saw as a really close friendship somewhat intensified by dramatic circumstances. My take is that Chloe is bisexual in the sense that she's physically attracted to both genders, but emotionally she's much more into women. And that she was in love with Max probably before she even realized what those feelings were. Max struck me as being mostly straight, and possibly confusing her emotional intimacy with Chloe with attraction due to inexperience, but it's also entirely possible Chloe would be her one big exception. I think everyone is capable of going against their usual preference if they meet the right person. Edit: Rachel and Chloe are hella gay together though. I mean did you see how Chloe reacted in the dressing room? Canemacar fucked around with this message at 21:06 on Oct 7, 2017 |

Pretty much how I read it, too, with Max more or less being straight but it making sense to take either choice re: Chloe. Chloe being bisexual leaning much more toward women fits for me, or even she's just not against hooking up with guys because it's a small town and her options are limited for the intimacy she's craving. Either way she's certainly no gold star women only ever type. She's still sorting it out.

Aside from flirting with Jefferson a bit in episode 4 Chloe's never really shown all that much attraction to guys that we've seen but the first game seems to hint (and this game almost directly states) that she is/was crushing pretty hard on Rachel, though time will tell whether it was entirely one-sided or not. As others have mentioned, while she's an interesting character and does seem to actually care a bit about Chloe she's also extremely manipulative and most likely originally latched onto her as a means of escape rather than any real romantic attraction. As such Rachel doesn't seem all that trustworthy to me (especially adding in stuff we learn about her in the first game). I believe Rachel was described at one point in the original as being like a chameleon, by changing her persona to fit the situation she can pretty much blend in with any crowd, she strikes me as either heavily insecure or as having the mindset of a child, thinking life is just a game for her to win (or maybe both). I think the only time she lets the mask drop so far was at the very end of the first episode after she's hit a particularly low point in her life, I'm curious if we'll be seeing more of the real Rachel Amber in the remaining episodes or just a new mask she puts on when around Chloe. Of course, like with Nathan, that attitude and putting her faith in the wrong people is what ended up costing her in the end.

An interesting (and kind of tragic) idea is that if you subscribe to the theory that Rachel was the Doe and the storm was her revenge that would mean that even in death Rachel wasn't able to free herself from Arcadia Bay. As a result she decided to play one final game, using Chloe and Max as pawns in order to bring about a strorm and eliminate the problem all together by wiping out the town. Chloe wouldn't take much coaxing as it's pretty easy to manipulate someone already devoted to you and with her own grudge against the town (and may have already been leading her along beforehand via the Raven, though that one could be William considering he's the form it's been taking so far when speaking to Chloe directly). Max was kept on track via her devotion to Chloe and the Doe leading her along. Ironically it's that very devotion that wakes Chloe up in the end, realizing what they both had become and volunteering to sacrifice herself in order to end it. At that point Max can either choose to continue to follow the script she's been given (sacrifice the town) or reject it (sacrifice Chloe), saving both their souls and pacifying Rachel's in the process. I read her as queer pretty much immediately and Max as... confused. Chloe immediately reinstating Max to Rachel Amber status in her personal life probably intensified whatever relationship the player sees for them. And anecdotally speaking, a lot of LiS' biggest fans are hella gay for Chloe.

"Reinstating Max to Rachel Amber status" becomes literal when you remember she pushed Max into dressing in Amber's clothes in the same convo she tried for a kiss. Chloe was definitely projecting some expectations on Max, weather she meant to or not.

They did point her to Rachel's exact location... Chloe literally says "This is like Rachel's revenge" when she sees the storm for the first time in LiS, though I suppose whether or not that was meant to be taken literally is up for debate. Chloe also kind of is the storm personified. With the exception of the first one (which occurred before she even got her powers, implying either she's been stuck in a time loop for god knows how long or the storm wasn't entirely her fault. It could have been like a self-fulfilling prophecy or something though) , most of Max's visions occur while in Chloe's presence, particularly the one where she finds out she only has a week before it hits right after Chloe says how much she'd like to blow up the town that's taken everything from her. Adding in the scene with Rachel at the end of BtS' first episode and the fact that at some point Chloe basically became her clone (as far as her rebellious streak and a few personality quirks go at the very least) so it stands to reason that all 3 girls might be partially to blame for what happened. Based on what we know about her Rachel probably wasn't helping Max along for the good of the town and there's also the fact that the Doe appears one last time if you sacrifice Arcadia Bay but only the Butterfly appears if you let Chloe die. There is something weird about Rachel though. For example, how did she manage to listen to Chloe's argument with the bouncer and then get inside the mill without either of them noticing her? Or how she somehow saw the incident with Nathan and Drew through a door almost completely obscured by posters. In fact, I think the only things she didn't bring up were the incident with David in the car (which to be honest would probably have raised more than a few red flags if she had. The Raven saw it though), the D&D game (which would have just been a weird thing to bring up) and possibly Wells. Was she stalking Chloe or something? Not to mention how she kept conveniently popping up around Chloe in the first part of the episode. Also considering her dad's the DA you'd think her parents would have put a bit more effort into looking for her rather than staying in denial that she was even missing in the first place. Finally, I'm curious if Chloe is ever going to directly acknowledge the Raven at some point (the closest thing so far is the start of the second dream sequence). It's clearly observing Arcadia Bay and particularly Chloe for a reason, but I'm not quite sure what that is yet. Larryb fucked around with this message at 03:31 on Oct 8, 2017 |

And we know Rachel had a big influence on Chloe; I wouldn't be surprised if the hair dye and tats were suggestions from her (quick aside: did anyone else notice the woman cheating with Rachel's dad had tat sleeve on her left arm?). So in that sense, the storm could be Rachel's revenge, albeit in a metaphorical way than by deliberate action. Larryb posted:There is something weird about Rachel though. I remember in the thread for the first game people were theorizing that Rachel also had time powers to account for how she could seemingly be there for everyone and always know how to say the right thing to be super popular among a wide group of people. The time power thing didn't pan out, but there is definitely more to Rachel than meets the eye. The two truths and a lie bit seemed to be hinting at something; thats a lot of effort for the devs to put in just for some characterization they could have gotten across with a normal conversation. There is definitely something more to that woman than meets the eye at the very least (the game wouldn't put so much focus on her otherwise and she seemed a bit too smug sitting there watching the forest fire). Despite Rachel claiming otherwise some have speculated that she could be Rachel's birth mother. I'm not sure about that myself but I guess it could be possible that she left and her father remarried back when Rachel was too young to remember (and the woman Rachel thinks is her mother is obviously still in the picture considering she references her during the scene at the Drama Club and if she wasn't there wouldn't have been as much of a problem with her dad seeing somebody else). We'll most likely be learning more about her in the next episode as well as potentially getting a glimpse into Rachel's home life. Again, I really hope they don't go full Laura Palmer regarding the relationship between Rachel and her dad. Much like how Life is Strange was more about Chloe's story than it was about Max's, I have a feeling that Before the Storm is going to mainly focus on Rachel with Chloe just being along for the ride. Time will tell I suppose (with any luck the next episode should be out by late this month/early November and most likely answer a few questions, while at the same time raising about a dozen more as is usually the case with this series). Considering that this apparently only takes place over the course of a week or so I am very curious to see how they're going to eventually end it. Also whether or not the "devils" they'll be facing in the final chapter based on the title are going to be in the form of people, Chloe and/or Rachel's personal demons, or both. Not to mention if Chloe's raven is eventually guiding her towards salvation or ruin (though I suppose the answer to that comes in LiS proper when Max ends up taking over its role). As mentioned before, Chloe is the true protagonist of Life is Strange. Only difference is in the first game we're just seeing her from an outside perspective (sort of like Raiden and Snake in MGS2 in a sense). I'm really going to miss these kids when BtS finally wraps up but at the same time I'm looking forward to seeing what DontNod has planned for the sequel. Honestly though, I wouldn't mind seeing Deck Nine take another crack at the franchise one day either. Larryb fucked around with this message at 18:30 on Oct 8, 2017 |

Otherwise I'm not sure why it would get delayed as from what I understand it's basically Before the Storm Episode 0, taking place right before Max left for Seattle. Despite this being a prequel, I like that, given the limited time frame it takes place in, I still have no idea how this game is ultimately going to end. Though if they wanted, I could see them doing something like this: After the final scene in Episode 3 we jump forward 3 years to find the modern Chloe(complete with blue hair and beanie) standing outside Blackwell, she takes a drag from a cigarette as the raven continues to watch close by. The player is then given control of Chloe one last time as she walks through the halls of the school, eventually coming to the bathroom. We fade to white and cut back to outside the school where a gunshot is heard. The raven flies off and the credits roll. Larryb fucked around with this message at 15:00 on Oct 9, 2017 |

Making it roughly just as long as the previous game). There is technically still time to bring in a villain of some sort (the mystery woman and/or that Damon Merrick guy they mentioned at the mill are probably the top contenders so far) but I'm not sure if they'll end up going that route at the moment. You'd also probably have to have a few sections where you play as Rachel as there are several events during that time period that Chloe was not present for and wouldn't find out about until Life is Strange (for example, the first game seems to imply that Chloe had never met Jefferson until their brief conversation in Episode 4). If there is some kind of time jump at the end it would be cool if they got Ashly Burch back in to record a few lines if only for the sake of continuity (though keeping it completely silent outside of a song playing in the background would probably work too). Since we'll be playing as Max again for the bonus episode, it would also be a nice touch if they replaced the graffiti album with photos you could take ala the first game. I read somewhere that Deck Nine have stated the entirety of Before the Storm will take place over 3-4 days, similar to the original Life is Strange timeframe. I think they'll avoid tying anything too directly into the first game because there are a whole lot of issues that still cannot be resolved before Max steps back onto the scene. If Rachel has some connection to the supernatural then it cannot be made overt because Chloe doesn't say "oh hey you have superhero powers, just like my last friend" to Max in Season One. I wouldn't rule out a section where you control Rachel directly if the story does end up revealing some information no other characters can know.
